Growing Peonies in Central Texas?

I wondering if anybody had experience growing peonies in Central Texas, espcially around the Austin area, and how they turned out. I just planted peonies in root form this past late winter/early spring. They are not very popular here since we grow a lot of native plants that can take the heat and drought.

While I haven't tried peonies myself, I did visit the Arnoskys near Wimberly last week -- they own of Texas Specialty Cut Flowers and sell about 60 varieties commercially. They told me that peonies were one of the flowers they'd tried but not managed to have success with.
I figure if THEY can't grow them here, nobody can.

I put a plant in and I'm hoping it will do okay. So far today it looks like this in a bed that gets some direct, dappled and shade during the course of the day. The roots I planted aren't expected for another two years but are growing fine in the ground and pots around my El Paso yard.

Well, I'm not thinking of peonies, I'm thinking of TREE peonies, which are a different plant supposedly, and which are usually rated as good for zones 2 through 9. I talked to one of the growers I was thinking of using today and she said that they bloom as long as you have at least 30 days around 40 degrees. In Austin, we only get about 11 days that low in an average year. I've researched it quite a bit, and a lot of the information is conflicting. Some say that you can grow them just fine in containers in warm areas, I guess because being above ground lets them cool off more than being planted in the ground. Also, I read that the trick is to force them to go dormant in the fall by cutting off all the leaves in November, by which point they would have dropped naturally in most locations. I did ask on the peony board also, but haven't heard, so I was hoping somebody who had actually tried it would be able to chime in. If not, I'll probably try one plant this year and see what results I get. The people at the nurseries around here had never heard of tree peonies, by the way. They are a rare-ish plant, so that could be because they just don't grow here, or because they are so uncommon.

Go with High bush blueberries. They are the only ones that will do anything in Texas. There are many varieties so research the ones that will do well in your particular area. They have different ripening times as well so if you choose different ones carefully you can extend your harvest time. The most important thing is that they absolutely MUST have acid soil or you are wasting your money. In the Dallas area, where I am, everything is alkaline but fortunately they are one of the few plants that will grow well in pure peat. I have three bushes that I am growing in peat in whiskey barrels and they are doing well. You could also grow them in a tall raised bed using peat if your soil isn't acid. Also, test your water. If it is alkaline they won't like it. I water mine exclusively from my rain barrels. It is a bit of trouble to get everything to their liking but once you do they should grow for you. Verdant

Anyone in Central Texas grow Oakleaf hydrangea?

While hydrangeas in general are better in acid soils, according to author Scott Ogden they will grow in alkaline soil as long as it is well amended with compost and the bed is shaded. Our limey clays are mineral rich, but it takes humus to unlock that richness. Oakleaf hydrangea has a greater tolerance to limey soils than other species and hybrids. In Central Texas it is combined summer heat and humidity that causes failure even in many heat-tolerant plants.

Wimberley, Texas

I planted one Peony 10 years ago in my flower garden. Each year she would come up and reach the height

of one foot but no buds. This spring due to the rain and cool evening temp she grew to 2 feet and produced 2 buds.

It took the buds 1 month and they opened the past four days. They are a soft, soft pink in color, approximately 4" wide and the aroma is a soft sweet pink! Just like you would image pink to be. All the neighbors have been down to witness the opening. I believe I have the only Peony Blossoms in Wimberley, Tx. It was certainly worth the 10 year wait.
