night time birds
Comments (11)tim45z10, I'm pretty confident that you're seeing one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tyto_alba_1_Luc_Viatour.jpg It's a Western Barn Owl (which are apparently found all over the world). We've have some nesting in a neighbor's palm tree two years running. They're beautiful to watch... powerful fliers. They frequently swoop in low to investigate my nieghbor when he leaves for work at 2:15 a.m. Noisy with an oddball collection of vocalizations. Sometimes they make a sound like a squirrel-cage fan motor that's out of balance (chikchikchikchikchikchik...) for minutes on end. Enjoy, they're big rat eliminators. Here is a link that might be useful:...See Moreall night, every night-does this bird never sleep??
Comments (3)hmmmm Dirtgirl, I had no idea they were up at night. I would have bet it to be a mocker. Can you find it with your night vision binocs? (just kidding.....since you probably don't have any). I never thought I would tire of any birds songs either, but last summer, I had a red-eyed vireo around, who sang non-stop, all day. Alright already!! lol!...See MoreStrange night call from some bird I never heard
Comments (3)I haven`t heard it since. The mellow tones it made were similar to a middle "C" started note. Kinda sounded like it was played on a flute. Does a mockingbird sing at night? I haven`t heard any do that and we have a bunch here in the neighborhood. After the sun goes down, it gets completely quiet here as far as ANY bird singing, unless it is a hoot owl...and that is rare when I hear them. It was also loud and far off ( 200 yards or so ) I am guessing it must have been a large bird making the sounds. I heard it well from where I was at. I will check out your link about night birds. I really appreciate the help! :) This one has me tweaked. Thank you! :)...See MorePlease help me I.D. this new bird sound
Comments (7)The Towhees around here-East Tennessee-certainly sing the "Drink" part of their song, also the "Tea" part-sometimes written as towhee. This am I heard "Drink, drink, drink....long pause...your tea" Then just "drink drink..." I think it's a little later in the year when I hear the "tea" or "towhee" part alone. Right now I have an Eastern Wood Peewee that repeats "pee-oh-wee" over & over & it's kinda mournful sounding. He sings from a cedar tree in a small cemetary across the road & it seems fitting somehow. Susan...See Morehobokenjohnson879_gmail_com
