partial sun, partial shade, what does it mean???

I have a flower bed that faces east-ish and against the house. It gets sun from 7am to about 130pm then the eaves of the house shades it. I know that is six hours of sun and should be considered full sun??? But does it matter if it's more morning sun and afternoon shade? How intense does the sun have to be to be considered full sun? I have a japanese maple tree in that area and seems to be doing ok. only a few brown tipped leaves...but it was just planted three weeks ago. At Home Depot all types of Japanese Maples are displayed without any protection and sits in the hot sun all day?!?

Please help!

Thanks!
