NEW: Holiday Seed Cocktails

Here's the plan. In this swap, players will send in their various seeds, such as zinnias, cosmos, foxglove, etc. Once I've received them all, I'll combine all the seeds of each type, give them a good stir, then repackage them and send them back, giving you a seed "cocktail". The fun will be in not knowing what variety of seed you're planting until it comes up, giving you a big SURPRISE!!! Not only will this provide new varieties for you, but also provide a wider gene pool for your upcoming seeds, making for bigger, brighter blooms!

For example, say three people send in cosmos, seashells, picotee, and bright lights. Those three people would receive back a mixture of seashells, picotee, and bright lights cosmos. At the same time, ten people send in ten varieties of coneflowers... hot papaya, purple, double decker, etc. I'd mix up all of those coneflower seeds, and those ten people would receive back a sampling of all those different coneflowers.

If you'd like to participate, e-mail me for my address. Once you have it, send your seeds, with return postage and address label, to me. It would be great if they could all be here by November 12th. Seeds should be in their own packets, no more than 3 varieties per species, and no older than 2007. The number of packages of seeds you send in is completely up to you, whether it be 1 or 50, or somewhere in between. Just remember to put in each packet a fair number of seeds. I know that's a judgement call on your part, but there's no way I'm going to ask anyone to count out 100 foxglove seeds! Lol, that would drive anyone insane!

I think it would probably be a good idea to hold this to between 25-30 people, but we'll see what kind of response this gets and go from there.

The wind finally died down enough that I could get a start on fresh harvesting. I am going to finish up this weekend and get my package off to you Dan.

Finally got some much needed rain but that brought in cooler temperatures. At least there has been no frost or freeze yet so more time for seeds to mature and get harvested.

There is only one St. Peter and it is currently in my garage producing Yet More Pods. I posted a side-by-side picture at some point but didn't save a link (Clip). I named St. Peter that because it isn't obscene like its Daddy Peter. Think of it as Mother Nature airbrushing the naughty bits. Pod size is a little smaller than Peter; plant size is considerably larger than the Peters I handled this year. As for the floral note, there is some of that in Daddy, but lots more in the saintly offspring.

seysonn What if Johnny sends you 30 packs of seeds, including everything on your wish list. Would you send them back, use them (the ones you like) or trash them. Where's the fun in only getting 6 packs- you get to pick and choose what you would like to grow next year. My first year I got like 35 packs of seeds. I used most since I wanted to try some new varieties. I sent in 130 packages- anywhere from 3-5 bags of the same variety, 31 different varieties, about 20 seeds per pack. From mild to Habanero hot for everyone to enjoy and grow out. I don't expect back 130 packs of seeds. I would venture to say that this year Johnny will be sending out more seed packs, split up among all participants, from what I am seeing so far. blizlady, that would be Sherry (sheshebop), she makes the spinach "brownies" and I love 'em. How many people do you have to serve appetizers to, Dawn? Little pate choux puffs, tiny cream puffs, can be filled with various fillings including chicken salad, egg, tuna or seafood salad, a thick southwestern chicken kind of filling, whatever you like. I make rye puffs and fill with reuben fillings and they can be done ahead of time easily. Reuben Puffs 1 cup water 1/2 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup rye flour 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 eggs Caraway seeds CORNED BEEF FILLING: 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 2 packages (2 ounces each) thinly sliced deli corned beef, chopped 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons minced chives 2 tablespoons diced onion 1 teaspoon spicy brown or horseradish mustard 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder In a large saucepan over medium heat, bring water and butter to a boil. Add flours, parsley, garlic powder and salt all at once; stir until a smooth balls forms. Remove from the heat; let stand for 5 minutes. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Beat until smooth. Drop batter by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets or make puffs with a pastry bag. Sprinkle with caraway. Bake at 400° for 18-20 minutes or until golden. Remove to wire racks. Immediately cut a slit in each puff to allow steam to escape; cool. In a large bowl, combine the first eight filling ingredients. Split puffs; add filling. Refrigerate. Yield: 4-1/2 dozen. I make these cheese thumbprints filled with hot pepper jelly, they are pretty popular. I make my own habanero jelly to fill them with, but anything you like could be used, including salsa. I got the recipe from Carol (Readinglady) and she's never given me a bad recipe! Savory Cheddar And Jalapeno Jelly Cookies 8 oz (about 2 1/2 cups) finely grated (use smallest holes on grater box) extra-sharp cheddar cheese 6 tbs (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 cup all purpose flour 1/3 cup jalapeno jelly, apple butter, or chopped chutney Place cheese ad butter in a food processor and pulse a few times to combine. Add flour and process until mixture forms a soft dough. Gather up dough and divide into two flat disks. Wrap in wax paper and freeze until chilled, about 45 minutes. Position two racks in center and top third of oven. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone pads. Place the jelly in a small plastic bag and force it into one corner. Snip off the corner of the bag to make a small hole. Set bag aside. Using 1 tsp of dough for each, roll the dough into small balls. Place the balls 1-inch apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Using the end of a wooden spoon or a 1/2-inch wide dowel, poke an indentation in each cookie. Pipe the jelly from bag into the indentation. Return to the oven and bake, switching the position of the sheets from top to bottom, halfway through baking, until the tops are lightly browned, about 10 minutes (the cookies will continue to crisp as they cool). Transfer to a wire cake racks and cool completely. Can be prepared 2 days in advance in stored in air tight containers at room temperature. OK, first I use a spoon, not a bag, for the jelly, I made a big mess with that ziplock bag thing. Second I bake them one pan at a time, I don't do the remove/switch thing, it's easier for me to do one pan at a time. Third, this dough is very similar to another one posted here by Weed, so you could wrap it around an olive or pecan, etc., and make a whole difrferent kind of appetizer. I doubt I'd take the time to wrap the dough, I'd probably plunk an olive in the middle of the "cookie" and call it good, LOL. If you don't do something like the puffed sandwiches, Ann T's Gougiere would be lovely, I think. An antipasta plate could be nice and could be entirely assembled ahead of time and I've had Caprese-on-a-stick, which was basically a cherry tomato, a chunk of marinated mozzarella, an olive and a leaf of basil, all skewered for serving. Meatballs would stay hot in a crockpot or small Nesco roaster without any last minute prep at all, as would chicken wings, although those could be messy unless they are boneless. LOL You're right, Maire_Cate. I have almost no closets in this house, no built-ins other than a couple of bookcases, and a severe shortage of storage. So what do I have? An overflowing liquor cabinet and a filled wine rack. The reason is that I like the idea of having a drink with friends, but it doesn't happen often. And I think drinking alone is no fun. I do come up with a special drink each year for my family at the holidays, but all that experimenting requires more ingredients than I'll use in the end result. As for the wine, I love searching for bargains in decent wine, but I would never open a bottle just for me. Wine doesn't keep well. So it sits there on the rack until I have guests or until (like this weekend) I bring a bottle to a party. I think another factor is that my parents always had a well-stocked liquor cabinet. They didn't drink wine, but they had lots of close friends, couples who would stop in for an evening. My dad would make Manhattans, or Tom Collinses, or serve beer, depending on the season. No one ever got drunk; it's just that the cocktail hour was a tradition in our circles in New York. My in-laws in CT did the same. But although it was what we grew up with, my DH and I didn't drink at all for about 20 years when our children were growing up. No time to "relax with a drink" with three kids in the house. I didn't learn to like good wine until about ten years ago.

Well, I will get mine mailed soon. Just had a two week visit from my daughter and new grandson, so I haven't even looked at seeds... I started sorting before they came, and will get back to it on Saturday.

Good Afternoon Everyone!

Today I received a coupld of huge, filled envelopes full of seeds from Michelle and Jeanne. Michelle, are you one of those people who've gone into McD's and ordered the full menu? I ask this because it looks like you received a seed catalog last spring, took one look at it, and ordered at least one of everything! WOW!

I have a question for you all, and would like your feedback. When you send something in and it's the only envelope of that particular type of plant, would you be okay with those seeds being thrown into the cocktail mixture? E-mail me or post your answer here, and I'll follow your preferences should this happen. Thanks!

Dan, I have a feeling a couple of my seed packets will be an only one. I would not mind if it is thrown in a cocktail mix. As a matter of fact, I had more seeds I was going to include but thought some would be an only one of its type so didn't know if it would work. Makes more of an element of surprise.

Sounds fine to me that if there is only one packet, you put it in a mixture of all different types.
Would it be too much trouble for you if that happens to give us a list of what seeds went into the mix so we might try to identify the seedlings when they come up? That would make it more fun (at least to me) than to have to wait until something fruits or flowers to guess what is it.
Can't wait to see what cocktails result!

I think a "recipe" or list of "ingredients" for the cocktail is a great idea! Not every bag of seed mix will be the same, but a list of the possible seeds contained therein would really help the guessing game next summer, wouldn't it? Great idea!

I knowI sent a little of this and a little of that, I don't have many seeds left after moving and I'm TRYING TO CONSENTRATE OF JUST 8 OR 10 KINDS FOR NOW ooh crap sorry about the caps, I'm still trying to get used to typing on my phone. It' such a tenny tinny keyboard. I do want the coneflowers to go with coneflowers and columbines withe columbine coctail and so on but all the other odds and ends are for the miss mix.

My seed package is on the way. I am looking forward to seeing the results next year.

No frost here yet and there was another threat last night. Give me a little more time to get to some things before they meet their demise. I was going to harvest today but there are strong winds, AGAIN, and since they can gust up to 40 miles an hour, I won't bother. Would end up with my own cocktail mix all over the property.

Everyone sent in a great selection of seeds, but the Humanitarian Award definitely goes to Michelle Reynolds. She sent in a HUGE amount of seeds and only asked for certain ones back. Not only will I be using about half of her seeds for the Big Mix, but Michelle also provided the matching seeds to go to a good number of people who were the only other ones to send in certain types. ***applauding you all***
The Top Three Types of Seeds were Marigolds, Cosmos, and Morning Glories.
The Big Mix Cocktail will include over 50 different types of seeds!!! And yes, I will be sending a "recipe" with the mix so you can at least try to guess what's growing in your gardens.

And on that note, I'm going to take a break for awhile. I've been at this for the past 4 hours. It's fun though, so it's all good! Don't you just love playing with seeds? Of course, having Stella's "help" did affect productivity just a bit...lol!

OKAY! ALL the sorting is done, the recipe is printed, and all of the envelopes are sealed and ready to fly back home! YAYYYYYY! I'll be putting them into the mailstream later today once I've finished running my route.
For those of you who sent stamps, I put them on your envelopes. One or two of those might need some extra postage, and those will arrive home with a little postage due.
Two of you sent money, so I'll be going to the window with those and sending them on their way.
All in all, it's been a lot of fun, and I'd like to thank EVERYONE for their contributions! We went into this as newbies, having never done this type of swap before, but we all came through it okay and will be looking for some great surprises in our gardens next year.
If any of you have questions, please feel free to let me know.

I received my seeds and I am really happy with the exciting mixtures. I couldn't believe the huge list of flowers in the "Big Mix Cocktail"!
