Yes, and how often have you tried to move a tree any way but the way you believe in? I can't wait until full dormancy to begin moving trees and have moved thousands of fruit trees over the years not fully dormant, bare root. I watch them come out of dormancy and with many of them for years and years after that. I believe this is one of those horticultural issues that has never really been researched. Cornell recommends stripping the leaves when moving them bare root, not fully dormant, but in my opinion, it is just one of those logical leaps often made in horticulture (and most applied sciences) that has never actually seen the light of research. They also recommend against fall planting fruit trees (or at least did up until recently). The trees that I move earlier, when they have some leaves remaining, seem to do a little better than trees I move later when fully dormant, but it is not a controlled experiment and the trees are not equal to begin with. J. plum trees are particularly easy to transplant and respond without hardly skipping a beat. They are a nurseryman's best friend in this regard. I've even moved a couple when they'd already begun leafing out in spring, knocked off the soil from the roots because they were in in-ground growing bags and clay soil that made them too heavy for me to deal with. I threw them into my truck, drove them 100 miles on a clear dry day without protecting the roots in any way, yet, by mid- summer they were completely recovered. At the time I wasn't really expecting them to even live. So you can ignore my experience, but if you always do things by the book there's a lot you will never learn.

Ken's right. Some European cookie presses (don't know about Mirro) include a fat long tube attachment for inserting cream and jellied fillings. OK, I promised some plum recipes. I used Italian Prune-Plums for these recipes. We have gobs of them available locally and they're meaty and sweet. I would guess these recipes would be more tart with some other varieties. I have loads of old recipes using plums, so if these don't fit the bill, let me know. The first is the only one I haven't made, so I can't personally vouch for it, but the combination sounds intriguing. Plum and Peach Conserve (from the Farm Journal Canning and Freezing Cookbook) 3 cups ground sweet plums (Italian prunes) 3 cups mashed peaches 6 cups sugar 2 medium oranges Combine plums, peaches and sugar in large saucepan. Add grated peel from 1 orange, juice from 2 oranges. Cook, stirring frequently, about 25 minutes or to desired consistency. Ladle into sterilized hot jars to within 1/8" of top. Wipe rims; adjust lids. Process BWB 5 minutes. Makes 4 pints. Plum Conserve (an old Kerr recipe) My oldest Kerr book provides the first version; a newer Kerr book the second minor variation: Plum Conserve (very, very rich) 4 pounds plums (8 cups cut up) 2 lemons (juice and grated rind) 6 cups sugar 1 pound seedless raisins 6 cups sugar 1 cup walnuts Wash plums, remove seeds, weigh fruit. Combine all ingredients except nut meats. Cook until thick. Blanch nut meats 2 minutes, drain, cut or chop. Add to mixture just before removing from heat. Pour into sterilized KERR jars and seal while hot. (BWB 10 minutes.) Plum Conserve #2 4 pounds plums (8 cups cut up) 4 tablespoons lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon rind 1 cup seedless raisins 6 cups sugar 1 cup walnuts Same directions. Plum Conserve #3 (from So Easy to Preserve) 2 1/2 quarts chopped, pitted plums 3/4 cup thinly sliced orange peel 2 cups seedless raisins 1 1/2 cups chopped orange pulp (about 2 large) 6 cups sugar 2 cups broken pecan or other nuts Sterilize canning jars. Combine plums, orange pulp and peel, raisins and sugar; slowly bring to boiling, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves. Cook rapidly almost to jellying point, about 15 to 20 minutes. As mixture thickens, stir frequently to prevent sticking. Add nuts the last 5 minutes of cooking. Pour hot conserve into hot jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Wipe rims; adjust lids. Process 5 minutes BWB. This prune cake was posted by Lisbet at the Recipe Exchange; AnnT made the recipe but toasted the walnuts. Prune Sour Cream Cake Serving Size : 12 1 1/2 cups Sunsweet Prunes (use already pitted, soft prunes) 1 tablespoon grated lemon rind 2 cups sifted flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup soft butter 1 cup granulated sugar -- * I use 3/4 cup 2 large eggs 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped English walnuts Pour boiling water over prunes. Let stand 15 minutes. Drain, pit, and dice prunes. Add lemon and set aside. Grease and flour 9" tube pan. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt; remove 1/4 cup and toss with prunes. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Slowly beat in flour mixture, alternnately with sour cream and vanilla, beginning and ending with flour. Fold in prunes. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon and nuts. Turn 1/3 batter into pan. Sprinkle with 1/3 brown sugar mixture, repeat layering twice. Bake at 350 F. 55 minutes or until done. Cool in pan on rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pan. Description: "Coffee Cake Type. Tried and True! Very, very good!!" My notes say it's a "simple homely dessert or snack - almost a coffee cake." 1 1/2 cups chopped purple plums 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp. grated orange peel 2 cups flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1 cup buttermilk Nut Topping: 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup chopped nuts 1 tsp. cinnamon Pit and chop plums to measure 1 1/2 cups. Set aside. Blend sugars, egg and orange peel. Sift dry ingredients. Add to sugar mixture alternately with buttermilk, stirring well after each addition. Stir in plums. Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle with topping. Bake 350 35 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream. Now that I've remembered this one, I'm making it tonight. And finally, this recipe, including my notes from the first time I baked it. Arrange plum mixture in unbaked pie shell. Sprinkle with lemon juice. Prepare Spicy Topping and sprinkle over plum mixture. Place pie in brown paper bag. Fold over open end twice to close and fasten with paper clips. Carefully place on baking sheet. Bake in 425° oven 45 minutes or until plums are tender. Cool on rack. Makes 6 to 8 servings. NOTES : I didn't bake this in a paper bag. (Images of my oven on fire!) I baked at 400 15 minutes and then 350 approximately 45 minutes (hour total). This is an incredible recipe, perfect proportion of spices. The only complaint is 2 tablespoons of cornstarch was insufficient for the juicy plums. I would use more thickening, probably a mixture of flour and tapioca. This pie is very "drippy." Next time I'll use a baking sheet. Carol

Rusty- did you use B-1 or superthrive when you transplanted? If so, the leaves that are falling out- are they last years leaves (all is ok) or are they new leaves (possible transplant shock)? Bill

I'm just going to talk about a coupla things. This is just talk about issues and trade-offs, not criticism. So this is about a half-thought out plan that I made up just so it wasn't critiquing an existing one. I'm drew in detail both cleanup and baking prep. I am showing two blue lines that illustrate routes used with or without a prep sink. The rest of this is long and highly opinionated. Ok. So, let's start with cleanup. We've mostly all said that a 4 foot deep cleanup area is a bit much for "cleaning the clean up area" so this steps it back into the window a foot - yielding a three foot deep space which might be reachable (depending on god, the universe, your height, sink gismos and everything). The other thing it does is create a nice wide aisle around the open dishwasher - when duffers pass through on their way to Doritos or a beer or whatever, the human dishwasher can ignore them. A pass through area with double sided upper cabinets is entirely possible, but you need to put a ledge or a ledge plus a shallow base cabinet in the dining room side for "sit down" space for people getting dishes from the cabinets. I'm having some trouble understanding your friend's criticism about stuff being on the wrong side. With double sided glass fronted wall cabinets, you need to remember that the entire contents will be plainly visible. I find that leads to very few junky places and more order for me. The cabinets are only about 12-13" deep, so its is difficult to think of what would be piled up in front of your plates or soup bowls. Perhaps they were thinking of base cabinets? Food prep (of any sort) has a flow to it. Stuff from the ref usually goes to the sink, unless its a snack - in which case it either moves towards the dishes or the microwave or both! From the sink, or directly from the ref if you belong to my tribe, it travels to the prep counter area to be joined with water, prep tools, pantry stuff and pots or baking pans which are then put on the range or in the oven or the micro. The process may later need to drain something or slide stuff out to cool or be stired frequently. The messy leftovers go to a disposal or trash or compost. The packaging goes to the trash or recycling. The dirty pots and prep tools go to cleanup. So the arrangement of the appliances is important, and the positioning of water is vitally important. So, the cleanup seems good because you don't need to walk much at all - just for putting pots or prep stuff back. Trash isn't going to be optimally positioned (unless you're a garbage disposal person) caused it would need to be under the sink, probably forcing you to keep the under sink door open. Cooking is a little bit freaky. This is mostly because of the relative locations of the ref and the pantry and the prep area. You have one of those places where some of the spacial relations are difficult. Since all of the dry storage is across the hall, it's nice if the ref is closer to it BUT the ref can't be placed directly on the hall wall. It probably won't be able to open completely, leaving you to wrestle with it when you want to clean it. It's also not perhaps the best idea to bury your only ref inside the prep zone as it is the most frequently accessed appliance - particularly by those other folks who live in your house. Adding cabinets between the wall and the ref push the pass through up towards the sink. In every iteration of a corner plan with the sink in the bay - the sink or the dishwasher have an issue. Either the sink is too close to the corner and can only be used from one direction AND/OR the dishwasher is on the wrong side. If we reversed the sink and dw in the sample plan, the sink is better positioned, but the dw is not as it opens in front of the cabinets you like to use for dishes. Unloading becomes a two-step, first to the counter and then the cabinets after you close the door or drawer. In the ones with a corner and the range where the ref are traded, the dishwasher opens between the range and sink potentially causing serious accidents as its possible to turn from the range and trip over the dishwasher. The ref is shown near the sink. You can reach the peninsula counter to sit things down, which mitigates the distance somewhat, but it still might be crazy-making... Is it more crazy making than having people constantly walking behind you? Since the pass-thru moved up closer to the sink, I could put the range where shown. Its got counter on both sides. It won't prevent others from using the sink, altho others can prevent you from sliding over to dump a colander. Adding a prep sink kills the dark blue triangle that goes into the cleanup zone - always a good thing but really good in this example because that pot full of water and pasta can now pretty much always be drained without getting someone to move first. Other crazy stuff: ---- A person needs at least two feet of counter edge. If they are adults, it might feel slightly squished in. ---- The overhang for counter height seating should be at least 15". This isn't for the depth of the stools - its for knees. ---- The peninsula is tempting to hang a wall cabinet, but if you do, the second stool will be kinda difficult to use because the wall cabinet will be in the seated person's face and the last door is guaranteed to hit them in the head! ---- The ref location is hard to plan. There are two kinds of people in this world. The ones who get everything they are going to use out of the ref at once; and then there's my tribe. My tribe kinda fetches this, that and the other thing outta the ref all during the prep and cooking process. People say they can learn to be the other type, but I don't know. ---- Same thing with the views and prep-or-cooking-or cleanup. To me, windows are the most wasted in front of a cleanup area. Not the light wasted, but the views! When I'm doing cleanup, I'm looking at the dishes, not the view. And with dishwashers, I'm not in front of that window for very long. I think windows are more useful at prep or cooking (both!). ---- Also consider the social aspects of any plan. In this plan, you are oriented to the family room, and primarily the family room windows. You'd have a side view of the bay window - a front view would happen while rinsing veg - maybe. When you're cooking or doing cleanup, you'd be turned away from others. In all of the "real" designs, other things happen in your interactions with people and the views. Be sure you end up with the ones you'd like.
