Steve, seeds not hard to get for Amish Paste. This plant was from
my 2007 seed pack from SSE. If you want some later, I can send
    you some..
catman, Some of my tomatoes are getting that catfacing. No insect.
Others do not have that problem. I'm hoping the new tomatoes on my
CP come out ok. Had some thing on Aunt Ruby's and Kellogg's Breakfast.

I hope this will open. (I right clicked the image in photobucket and pasted it here)

These plants surprised me by how big they got and now they are REALLY productive.

Contrary to all of the stakes, this image shows only 2 plants. Carmello and Arkansas Traveler. Carmello is out producing AK 3 to 1.

Could someone tell me how to resize photos in PhotoBucket? The large pics are great for detail, but they don't need to be as large as these. Some of mine waiting on warmer weather. Aiming for early April plant-out: A squash plant, a pepper plant, oregano, and five little dinky tomato babies, including the brandywine I was rooting for. SunGold F1s, SunGold Select II, and a couple of Earl's Faux. Opalka, Cowlick's Brandywine, &amp; Earl's Faux.

I like to call this picture, &quot;Tuesday&quot;: Two Costoluto Genovese, Two Cherokee Purple, One Eva Purple Ball, One Roma, One Acorn Squash, Four Serrano Peppers, and a whole bunch of Sungolds. The CP's are that split and the CG's have a bit of sunburn, but all in all, a good day! :-)

These are mostly RossoRosso (since they all matured quite a bit earlier). The one on the bottom left is the aforementioned &quot;tomato&quot;, whatever it is. None of them have turned red, but rather pastel pinky orange. Not sure if it's the heat or the variety. (shrug) The tiny RossoRosso are from the same plant as the giant top-left RossoRosso. Not sure why they're so small, but that's just the lowest branch. All the rest have big normal sized tomatoes (shrug). They're yummy though :D

TNVG - Is that a wild strawberry or a cultivated one?

bdobs - so Roper got an evil cat grin Cherokee Purple, but you've got the evil Cat Monster CP...looks like CP is very prone to catfacing. ;)

I'm growing Indian Stripe which is supposedly a variation of CP, but so far, all the fruit I've seen aren't catfaced. I can't wait for ripe ones...I've heard nothing but good about the variety.

Catman, I'm sure your disappointed lol

But I think the catfacing comes w/ early toms that are fused.

The wife made her 2nd trip of the season to the mater patch this evening to see what I had been doing all day and she too vowed that I would never plant this many again. Wow I wish I had that much land to grow on.

I convinced the wife (wasn't hard) that I should expand my little garden since it is doing so well. Last weekend I built a picket fence to keep the dogs out and painted it today. It appears to be working.

    {{gwi:108614}}

I would have planted them a little further apart if I knew they would grow this large. One is an early, one is "the best tomato" and I'm not sure of the third.

This one's a monster about 6' by 3' and has a ton of tomatoes. some are starting to ripen.

The cherries are so loaded one of them collapsed. I will have to prop it up with some more bamboo.

Here are some of my tomatoes, all started from seed, planted out May 7 except for the cherries which were planted on April 21.

Our back yard before and after (we have been here a year).

Here's Ponderosa Red and the Red Sausage I was telling you about...

The next three are from a Jung Seed Heirloom sampler..could be Amish Paste, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Black Brandywine, German Johnson, Giant Oxheart, Mortgage Lifter, Orange Strawberry, Pineapple, Red Brandywine, Watermelon Beefsteak, White Wonder, or Yellow Brandywine. Your guesses desired!

And, some cousins that go better with tomatoesÂ.

kterlep - I see you've got Riesentraube as well. My single plant of this variety has some huge trusses like yours...I can't wait to see how many fruit I get from them. We'll be on vacation when many of the flowers open, so it will be up to the wind and insects to ensure good pollination and fruit set.

sirdanny - awesome looking tomatoes. Is that Cyprus mulch you are using? I just got a few bags to put down in my garden and I'm hoping it will work OK. The main reason is to prevent splattering mud up onto the plants during watering.

  • sirdanny

    thanks catman.

yes it is cyprus mulch from lowes. About 2.25 per bag or so.

  • kterlep

catman, I try not to mess with my tomatoes, I have a stupid habit of knocking dried blossoms off that are apparently not quite ready to be knocked off.

  • catman529
    Original Author

sirdanny - I just got a few bags of the exact same stuff (cyprus mulch from Lowe's) and I just put it out under my tomatoes on top of a 1-inch layer of half-composted organic matter as a nutrient booster. Finally I don't have to worry about mud splattering everywhere.

kterlep - I do the same thing often. But I think some of the varieties I'm growing are faster to pollinate and set fruit, so it's not too much of a problem. I've noticed the big beefsteak-type tomatoes take a lot longer to start swelling fruit after the flower dies.

  • tn_veggie_gardner

  • trudi_d

I've only just started to fill in my online documentation, and so because it's still early in the season here I have only a few photos per variety.

This year I'm doing the last half of the USDA/ARS/GRIN tomato seeds that WinterSown received in 2007. The tomatoes are again from temperate zones with some quite cold winters.

Hopefully, they'll present a nice set of fruits worthy of sharing. The first to sprout was Islea, from the Netherlands--the USDA description says it's a round and red slicer. The very last to sprout was Rumi Banjan (an entirely different plant from Banjan Roomii which was in the 2008 set. Rumi Banjan will be yellow and Banjan Roomii is a wonderful small red beefsteak.

As the season progresses I'll upload more photos to the pages--I'll also include whatever problems come along--documentation is what it is and you get the bitter with the sweet.

I'm getting impatient...I want MY tomatoes to ripen!

    Update:

We're headed out on vacation tomorrow, and I'm sure this thread will need to be updated to Part 8 while we're gone.

TNVG, or anyone else willing, feel free to start Part 8 when this thread gets too full. Use the same layout (some HTML required).

One note - if you're typing instructions for the <img> tag, you'll know that just typing it with the < and > symbols will translate into HTML. But you can use the ampersand entities to get around this. To display the characters "<" and ">" in your post, type:

    &lt;
    &gt;

    Those will translate to:

    <
    >

    in the final post.

Sorry for rambling on about techincal stuff! Just thought I would offer it as a tip; it's nothing really important, just something I personally like to be consistent with . ;)

Keep on posting the great pics! I will still be able to look at the thread while on vacation, but obviously I won't have any new photos to post (and that's why I can't start part 8!)

I finally took some pictures with my good camera. :)

First, here's the back view of the little tomato farm.

I have five tomato varieties - cherry red (two in the same pot), a beefmaster, golden jubilee, super fantastic and jet star.

The cherry red set fruit first - here's the oldest set. But I have a ton all over both plants.

The Beefmaster is doing great as well. I have a big cluster towards the bottom, but here's the newest - I love how ribbed it is.

The Golden Jubilee surprised me - it was the runt of the litter for a long time, but then it suddenly sprouted fruit.

All of you should be so proud! I just did my first "garden" if you want to call it that this year. I live in TN and the soil is red clay so it was hard to get them planted etc. I have only had 4 tomatoes show up. Two were already ripe enough to eat and they were wonderful! ;) Is it normal to only have 4 though?? I have had lots of flowers but they die... I have 4 plants. 2 Bradleys, 1 Better Boy, and 1 Celebrity.. Any advice? I have heard if you cut the top off they will produce more??

Just go and post in Part 9, please. The reason I like to break these up into smaller parts is for people with slower internet connection. Many people here are posting many large photos, 50 posts of which can be really slow to load for some people.

So let's not bump this thread anymore and post in Part 9.

  • rj_hythloday

Just thought it was odd they were getting started when the old ones aren't even 1/2 full. Part 9 it is.
