I have a question to my friends at gardenweb. On the 2nd photo, one of my Pink Brandywine seedlings is regular leaf. Is there a regular leaf variety (or mutation) or could it be a Seed mix up?

Sounds to me like a seed mix-up but possibly a cross pollination?

Here is my first attempt with veggies in dirt in quite a while...we'll probably do raised beds next year, but for now, I just wanted to get started! :)

Wow!! Catman you got a whole factory there & your seedlings look GREAT!! What varieties are you growing Catman? and whats up with the Purple leaf seedling? Is that a special variety or something?

Got to give MG potting mix credit for the healthy growth...other than that I've been keeping up with the watering and keeping the grow lights at a good level.

I'm growing several varieties, I can get a list if you want.

The purple leaf seedling is a Black Pearl ornamental pepper - I found some growing at a city park last summer and picked some fruit, they tasted very hot so I saved the seeds and looked up the variety.

A couple more from the wilds of Allston. These are from this morning (4/2/10), 20 days after planting.

Several trays of tomato seedlings. I raised the growing lights up out of the way in order to get a good picture.

One of the seedling trays closer up. A bunch of these guys are just about ready to get potted up this weekend. Looking forward to it.

And, one of my last holdouts (Anna Russian) finally came up this week, which was very pleasing to see. So, apart from a couple of KBX seeds (which I have pretty much written off at this point), everything else came up. Nice.

Here are my little guys.. recently started (almost 2 weeks old) and just went through a slightly tramatic transplant phase so I'm hoping they'll perk up a bit soon. Not the best picture but I'm kinda testing out the whole picture posting thing since I haven't done it before

stquack I like the craftmanship in the coldframe bed. You have gave me an idea to help me prolong my season. whats the differance in temperture in the box to outside air.

kottonbail, In the summer its the same as a greenhouse. If you leave the lid closed on a sunny day 120 or higher. I take the lid off in June.

In the fall with (20) 1gallon milk jugs filled with water I could keep my night time low about 12F higher than the out side temp.

Without water jugs the temp drops off faster. With the water the temp trend doesn't drop as fast. After my peppers are done I have a flat of lettuce that I plant in Oct. and that grow all the way in to mid Dec

I recently picked up a Husky Red transplant from the Farmer's Market, and a Big Beef from Lowe's. My Husky Red already has a tiny tomato, hooray! Time to go into their big containers...hopefully tomorrow! The other sprouts pictured are: Sungold, Sweet Million, Stupice, and 3 Tumbling Toms. :-)

These have been in the ground for a couple weeks now. From near to far...2 Early Girl, 2 Purple Cherokee, 1 Black Plumb, 1 Brandy Boy. I normally plant out earlier than I probably should...but I always have tomatos earlier than I should also. They have slowed thier growth some, we've had a few sub 40 days, but they still look good and strong.

I did it again...picked up yet another tomato plant! LOL. Now I have zero spaces remaining (container condo gardener here). It was a little Black Krim, and I just wanted one plant out of the 4-pack, so the guy said take it for free! How could I refuse? I love our FarmerÂs Market! But it can be a dangerous place for plant lovers...I will not buy another tomato...I will not buy another tomato...

He will go into his extra large permanent container soon.

Lookin good, catman! =) Here are a few pics of mine I took this weekend. They are a tab bit stressed as they are in the middle of being hardened off, but they get better & better every day with it and are almost back to normal today. Also, I have about 10 or so flowers open, yay! One negative thing though. I ran out of 5+ gallon pots, so these 3+ ft plants are still in 1 gallon containers! Ahhhhhhhhhhh! ;-) I'm picking up some more 5+ gallon nursery pots todat at lunch. Until then, lots of watering.

My first round of mater plants (seed started January 23rd) were a bit slaughtered by a rough hardening off period. Their 3rd day of it, we had 30+ mph winds for hours and I couldn't get home to bring them in or anything, so they each lost a handful of branches and some random leaves here & there. 3 out of the 9 were not affected though, as they were in my greenhouse. The rest will be fine...just pisses me off that it happened. :-\

TNVG - tell me how the Persimmon tastes when you get fruit set, I have wondered about that one before. Also I see you are growing Sungold, so am I for the first time (can't wait to taste it) the Sungolds are at least 2 inches taller than all my other seedlings, they're about a foot tall already.

catman - How warm is it near your tomatoes? I have a similar setup and yours are growing like crazy compared to mine.

One of those days when I can`t get out and do any gardening so heres a pic of part of my tomatoes I don`t have fruit but the flowers are starting to open up, OH by the way checking on your garden 15 times a day won`t make them grow faster lol. I have so many extra tomato plants I just can`t toss them.

isuhunter - temps are variable anywhere from 80s to 60s...I leave the window open most of the time and I'm growing in a 3rd story room right against the roof. That plus the heat from the grow lights seems to work great for them. Sungolds are tending to be more leggy but I've heard how fast they grow.

Thanks catman... I think mine are in that 60's range all the time. They are in a friends basement and I think they are watered plenty, which might be slowing them some.

isuhunter - yeah I only water when they are on the verge of wilting, and then I don't give em much more than a couple day's worth of water. However I just started hardening off so I gave them some extra water in case the wind/sun dries them out faster.
