This last picture is a patio type and I think I clipped its growing branch cause it doesnt have one, I cannot find where it wouldve been though, I will have to wait and see if I grows an alternate stem. bummer, unless this is normal, then yeah! notice the seashells, rocks and sticks lol!

Lookin great, read! =) I'm also shooting for some late May maters. I have small ones on my Wisconsin 55, Rutgers & Persimmon plants. I wonder which one will grow & ripen first? I have never grown any of these 3 varieties before.

Here are my babies for the first time this year! Sowed the seeds around the 9th. They're sitting in front of my west-facing window, trying to get some sun and a bit of wind. It's getting a little warmer here in Toronto, after a random warm spell followed by a cold spell.

Yall some hardcore tomato growers, I cant imagine that many plants! rock on!!!

This is my first time growing anything edible. All seems to be going well! In the photos, I have 2 tomatillo plants, 3 Better Boy tomatoes and 1 Early Girl tomato. I found my very first tomato today on the Early Girl. All tomato plants have at least 20 flowers each - about 4 have set fruit. Hopefully during the next week, I'll be seeing a lot more.

When did you put those huge beautiful plants in their containers? Did you remove the bottom leaves, as it looks like most all of your plants have no leaves on the bottom 2 feet or so. Are those SWC or just regular containers with hole near the bottom for overflow?

I think I may have repotted mine in too big of containers, but what's done is done...

I already stripped lowers leaves and buried the stems more.
They look healthy anyhow.

These are Green Zebra and Kellogg's Breakfast. I have others, but they are not nearly as big as these.

loneleigh - started mid February? I started mine after you did and mine are well over a foot tall. Maybe add some fertilizer? I wouldn't worry too much about it though because they look pretty healthy.

Yes catman, I started mid Feb, used seeds from a seed exchange (Don't know how old they were?)but I do think you're right I should of used fertilizer. (I know, bad me) I now have been adding some tomato tone. Hopefully this will perk them up more. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks!

TNVG - I've had a couple "butt" (double) tomatoes, at least one last year and one the year before. I'm sure I'll get another one this year...they seem to appear regularly but not too often.

Yea, this is my first in a few years. I don't remember seeing a megabloom there either. Can they came from a single flower or does it need to be a mega?

you know I'm not sure if I've actually seen the flower before a double fruit forms, I usually notice them when they're around a pea size. I'm sure it comes from a fused blossom though, although it may look more like two separate blossoms than a long odd-shaped megabloom.

Yea, I see what you're saying. I was just looking at my "butt mater" & it looks like it has two leaf pieces (don't know true word) parallel where only each one should be.

I'll post Bloody Butcher. This is the one I'm hoping to get early
tomatoes from. Hopefully before July 4th. There are some flowers

It's really early for fruitset around here. Normally, we don't plant out until after the 15th of May (or later).

are ahead of me in the pepper department. I have 1 inch long
fefferoni peppers forming so far.

What's crazy is that I'm in Northeastern PA. I started early, have been careful to protect from cold temps, and there have been stretches of good weather.

My Bloody Butchers germinated Feb 11th, Potted up March 3rd, and went into SWCs April 24th. They've spent most of the time on my porch, either covered for cool nights, put in a mini-heated greenhouse when needed, or brought inside when it got really cold. I have 5 gallon jugs with the bottoms cut out that go over them now when it's cool.

Last year I didn't get any ripe tomatoes until almost August.

You shouldn't really be surprised about your "early" crop - - planting in SWCs results in a 4 to 6 week advantage over in-ground planting due to the fact that the grow media warms up faster in containers. Your challenge come middle of Summer will be to keep the SWCs cool, and well watered (daily). Good Stuff!!

I think a lot still depends upon the weather. I had store bought plants out by this time last year in SWCs, and still didn't get anything early, but we a cool, wet spring followed by a cool, wet summer. I also chose this variety for earliness since you and lots of other GWebbers have had good results with it. Also of note, 2 of these are using a 3:2:1 mix, and 2 are using JaGs mix. I'll be repeating with 4 Stupice that are chomping at the bit to get our of their cups within the next couple of days.

I unfortunately won't be posting any pics of my tomato plants for at least a week, if not more. I had 2 come down with an early blight that are about gone, then we had 2 crazy periods of rain that messed with them a bit, and the icing on the cake...this insane flooding in middle TN & that seems to have seriously hindered the growth of most of my plants. =( I can only hope they bounce back quicly with these few sunny days we're having now. Wish me luck. I'd like to at least end up with a few mater plants out of my original 16!

Best of luck TNVG, we've got sunny weather for at least a week on the forecast. The community garden where I was just about ready to plant out my tomatoes got flooded, I might have to re-build the stake/twine system I had put up but at least my plants are OK. They went back outside again for the first time yesterday, since there was no way they were going out in the storms.

I purschased and got my plants in the ground on April 12.

What is ALS mix?

Al's Mix is 5 parts partially composted pine bark fines, 1 part peat, and 1 part pearlite.

Rosarama, im in no way taking credit for this growing medium, I learned about it on this forum. Its strickly for containers for what I know about it. The man that came up with it to my knowledge is Al Tapla.
5 parts pine bark, ground up cut up or whatever is done to it till its the average size of a dime.
1 part coarse perlite
1 part peat
2 cups dolimite, 1 cup of pro max minors, 2 cups of slow release fertilizer
I mix every thing in a 36 gal container, a little at a time. I believe its the best thing since sliced bread. Look up and study Als mix. If your serious about growing maters in containers you should learn about Als mix, it would save you a lot of heart ache, and make you much more successful in growing in containers.
