I will be making salsa too, with tomatoes, cilantro, and habanero (the rest of the ingredients will be store bought though). I wish I had room to grow a serrano plant as well, because Habs don't have the best flavor (but the heat is awesome)

Here they are! After 8 days straight of rain with very few sunny breaks, they are doing well. =) Some were transplanted last weekend (big green & grey containers & two mater plants in hanging baskets) and have grown at a tremendous rate since then, maybe a 1/2 a day or less to reroot. Yay! Let me know what y'all think. You can compare to the pics above I believe I took on last Saturday...

My new additions...Orange Maters...couldn't resist at 4 for $1.50 ($12 a flat!) at my favorite local nursery.

TN Veggie - I would let it sprawl downwards if I were you. It is going to get BIG. If, later in the season, you think it is outgrowing its pot, then move it up to a bigger pot size as well. Best of luck with your tomatoes. They all look healthy and growing well...

I've got fruit on most of my plants. The weather this week is going to be great for fruit set. Top performers so far are Stupice, Indian Stripe, Rutgers, San Marzano, Burgundy Traveler and Black Cherry. I should start havesting in a couple weeks.

I added 4 raised beds this Winter. I have an herb garden on another side of the house. Besides 15 tomato plants, I have a variety of peppers, sqaush, cucumbers, corn, and some scattered herbs in my garden this year.

I can't believe how far along some of your tomatoes are! It is amazing how quickly I've forgotten about Zone 9 planting and harvesting dates now that I'm going on my 4th season in Zone 6. These photos are great inspiration and make me happy that I've been so diligent with my seed starting efforts this year. I'm growing 4 Opalkas for canning, and also Isis candy, Orange Russian, Stupice, Earl's Faux, Red Currant, Kellogg's Breakfast (one of my favorites) and Black from Tula. I also picked up a plant of something that I think is called Bush Goliath, which I'm hoping will supply me with some early fruits, though I think it will be followed closely by Earl's, Stupice and the cherries.

I'd say I'm jealous, but truth be told, I don't miss those long Bakersfield summers, and like having the winter off to build anticipation for next year's garden. I'll be posting my tomato pic soon enough ;-)

tn veggie gardner, I guess I chose the name because few things make me cuss as much and cause me as much aggravation as plants do.

I'm about a mile from the coast. It's usually warm enough here to start tomato plants the week after Christmas and set them out the last week in Febuary. However, this year there was a chance of frost, so I didn't get my plants out until March.

I estimate the two large fruits (pictured above) will weigh a pound and some ounces. That's not anywhere close to record breaking, but it could be record breaking for my garden, as this is only my second year growing tomatoes.

lazyhat, your plants are enviably stocky. What's your secret?

We had some gorgeous weather last weekend and all of my maters and other veggies put on some growth. The pictures are from a week ago.

What are the little yellow tomatoes? Yellow Pear? Yellow Plum? I'm growing Yellow Plum but haven't gotten any fruit set yet...it was doing so well where I had first planted it so I transplanted it to my tomato jungle bed, and now its thriving, but still needs a little while before it sets fruit.

I know that your cherries grew very quickly, but I'm wondering if your cherries are growing so tall now because they are reaching for the light. I think that moving them down would give them a whole lot more light (I can see that in your pictures). Is it possible for you to move the brackets OUT toward the side rail of the balcony?

I would be interested (and I think it would be valuable for other people in your situation) to know how these tomatoes did last year, and what you are doing the same/differently this year. I think what you are doing is so cool.

Thanks, Kate. =) I moved the tall one down today. I thought about what you're saying a few times before. I have a good bit on the rail that's not too far in front of them. I decided not to move them out closer to the light (yet...may very well do in the future, depending upon what I put on the rail). These tomatoes the last few years I grew them were about 2 weeks behind in maturity (bud formation, etc...give or take a few days). They were quite a bit shorter, not nearly as stocky (# of branches, suckers, etc.). The suckers are already starting to get long on the ones this year (about 2 inches to 6/7 inches, depending upon place on plant). They normally don't get this long until about almost 3 months of age (from seed in dirt). I didn't do too much different this year. The main things would be starting in a peat pellet Jiffy greenhouse vs. seeds in potting mix in a wee pot/flat. I used MG Organic Choice Potting Mix for their seedling stage (plastic cups). Normally, I used regular MG Potting Mix. Those are the only real major differences I can think of right now.

Steve, Those cherries hanging on the wall need more sunshine. They look to be stretching for light. The stems are very long between the branches. Just my $.02.

That would be why I lowered the basket yesterday. =)

Here's an update on mine...First two are Cherry tomatoes, started from seed-in-dirt on March 10th. The next picture is my San Marzano Organic maters & the final picture is my Early Girls (both started from seed-in-dirt on March 3rd). The taller Cherry has 3 (maybe 4 by now) bud clusters & about 4-5 flowers open. The shorter one required a bit of "special care" and has yet to have a bud open, but it will soon. The San's & Early's have had bud clusters (some have multiple) for about two weeks now and will probably have flowers opening within a week. =)

A few notes...I'm very happy with the size & growth of what I earlier this year dubbed as my "Monster Cherry Tomatoes." One of them now about 4 feet tall at 10 weeks and 3 days from seed-in-dirt. I don't think I will do them in the hanging baskets again though, as they were originally placed in an area where they stretched too much for the sun & got a bit leggy. =) Who know what i'm going to have to do with the taller one. The basket will probably be hanging about half a foot from the ground by the end of the season...lol...my original plan was to have them drape over the sides of the baskets. I was unable to train them properly to do so though. I may try the same thing with a different method next year (maybe originally place the baskets in a better sunnier location).

My chocolate cherries have two flowering trusses a peice! Didn't pinch since they've already settled in, now just gotta see what nature is going to do...still tapping the supports like crazy as if I am actually going to cheat the system.
