Thanks! :-) I saw the mantis again today, and I think he is growing faster than my tomatoes LOL!

I saw and caught a few mantids around the garden last year and the year before. I haven't seen any this year though; if I find any in the wild I will try and bring them into my garden so they can eat the stink bugs that I find on the tomatoes.

They're quite helpful critters in the garden. Here he is again today, looking bigger, and enjoying another patio plant. I'll have to name him (or her) soon LOL! :-)

tn_vegie_gardner: I just plan on lots of sandwiches and salads with nice strong home grown tomaotos. Also a few split with a little salt on them makes a great snack.

I have enough to hand out some to the family on Saturday after a nice BBQ.

Chris: Sounds like you got the right plan. =) Mine isn't much different, but only a pepper from my garden, though I did pick my first ripe cherry mater earlier...yay! lol...Not sure why my San's & Early's aren't setting fruit. :-\ Prob too hot...they will set eventually. Back to beer & marinating I go...

Here a some spindly leggy toms I finally put in the ground to give them a chance. They were left overs that somebody said they would take. A month an a 1/2 later, guess they didn't want them...sigh! Wish them luck!

bdobs - that's a beautiful tomato in its own hideous way. Gotta love and hate fused blossom tomatoes. I've got a growing Caspian Pink fruit that's catfaced and curled up in a U-shape which, of course, came from a mega bloom. Only problem with these tomatoes is trying to slice them for a sandwich..

Will definitely be eating her in chunks :)
When I showed my wife she said "Wow, thats awesome....but it doesn't look very appetizing" :)

I think it definitely looks appetizing, but not easy to slice. But I guess you can't complain; you get it all to yourself now. ;)

I solved the "how to slice" problem with the fore mentioned Cherokee Purple.
I made my first batch of home grown Salsa last night. Considering my buddies ate the large bowl in less than 30 minutes, I think they liked it.

Cherokee Purple, Big Beef and sungold tomatoes, Three Pinento peppers, one Jally, one large red onion, lots of Cilantro, Sea Salt and one squeezed lime...YUM!!!

I am a newbie tomater grower. Bought 3 plants last year. But this year I started everything from seed. So this is our great tomato experiment... The plan is to create and can our own spagetti sauce and maybe salsa too if there is enough maters!

I sent away for and recieved the Campells tomato seeds, so I will be trying them next yr..

Wish I could find a better pic...they do seem to pose when you take photos of them.

I also have a video of a mantid riding on the back of a foam glider I built, as well as a video of two mantids fighting. But uploading those takes more time, maybe later...

I also have some pics of a mantis and I noticed while taking the photos, that the mantis almost always turned towards the lens. I thought at the time that it was probably noticing its own reflection in the glass of the lens.

Awesome picture catman!! And he's a big one! I bet your video is really cool. I love their expressions ~ they look like such intelligent, evolved creatures. And they're so brave too, keeping still with that big strange camera monster in their face! True Cindy, they really turn their heads to see their reflection or to keep a eye on what you are doing. It's a wonder my mantis is still around as much as I harass him hahaha, but he seemed very happy today when I saw him in the Boston fern on my patio! Same little guy (or gal ~I wonder how you tell...) :-)

Well here at the Jersey Shore we had 20 days of rain in June alone...not to mention most of May was rained out as well. I planted last week of May and here's where I'm at.

Have to keep the animals out...in the first 2 weeks without the fence, after the corn plants sprouted, I lost 7 plants to animals; mostly just dug up, chewed, and left laying there. I also lost a few green bean plants. Since the fence went up, not a single item lost to animal damage.

German Queen almost breaking over the top of the cage...i think they're around 4 1/2 feet tall (the cages that is).

Roma's...can you see the ground cause I sure can't :) These things are dense!

There are a few Roma's hiding in there...there are bigger ones but the plants just too dense to get pictures of them (not that I'm complaining or anything!!)

One final pic...with all of these stories about late blight sweeping through the Northeast, what do you think this is? Some of the lower leaves of the German Queen (PL) are getting yellow edges w/browning that almost feels "crispy" like they were deep fried. I've only really noticed this on the German Queens...maybe 1 or 2 leaves on each of the other plants. I was thinking just too much water or old leaves...see down around the bottom? All of this has been below the first fruit so I've just been pruning it off anyway.

It has turned out crazy here and this is about the best that I can share. Just a part of the combo job going on ... too much! The wife took a summer job and I think that it is because of the size of this years patch so I'm chugging along as best I can ;)

This year was a great success for me. Most of my plants performed well. The big winners were Indian Stripe and Burgundy Traveler and Giant Belgium. Stupice and Black Cherry and Rutgers did well as usual. Eva Purple Ball is doing well, putting out some pretty ones. Polish Linguisa, Marianna's Peace and Ponderosa Pink have started ripening in just the last week.

The double tomato is a giant belgium and the plant shown is a burgundy traveler.

I gave away a good many of my tomatoes and set up a produce stand for my kids in my front yard. A few people came straight out and said my tomatoes were the best they ever tasted. The Indian Stripes were the most favored, "in a class by themselves," as one person put it.

I credit a large part of my success this year to the experts in this forum. Thanks. I'll be putting in my Fall tomatoes in a couple weeks.

Lookin great, all! My San Marzano's are finally showing a good few baby maters & the Early Girl plant that about didn't make my move due to breakage & windburn is doing awesome! It has 2 small maters growing on it again. Check out my Steve's Garden/Hyponex Experiment Update post for pics of these & a ton more at the new yardiculously spacetacular townhome garden. =)

I picked my first ever tomato last night! It's a red cherry. It probably could have stood a few more days of ripening inside, but I was too impatient. It was really good. :)

Ahhah, healthy looking plants! :-) Do you know what varieties they are?

I have given bags to family and friends, I have taken bags to work. My wife and I eat them every day and they still keep coming. It's been a great year for only 7 plants.

Roper2008, nice pics. Place a ruler next to the tomatoes when you take the pic. That way it will give us a little perspective of just how large they are. Or hold it in your hand or place a quarter on top. You get the idea.

Hopefully in a week or two I'll have some nice pics of ripe tomatoes lining my kitchen counter. For now, I've harvested about 6 Stupices, 3 Bush Goliaths, 2 Isis Candies, and 10 Red Currants. Not quite exciting enough for a group photo. ;)

My Opalkas are the most monstrous plants I've ever grown. One is 7' tall 60 days after being set out in the garden, and these plants are thick and bushy. They're putting on quite a few fruit now, so I'm not worried that there over-fertilized. Just ridiculously vigorous. Stupice has been producing for me, and I have good-sized green fruit on Earl's Faux, Kellogg's Breakfast, Orange Russian, Giant Belgium and Black from Tula.
