Loved all the pic's. I have one just like the one you call Emma's gift. I thought it was a blue picotee MG!! I have saved those seeds seperately as I LOVE the flowers!

Hard to tell by the pics. If they look like they're slowly dying, then maybe. Tricks for damping off-- Air circulation -- maybe set up a small fan Bottom water --- set packs in a tub of water that has about an inch or so of water for about 15 minutes when watering Don't over water -- let top of soil dry out before watering(more people kill seedlings from over watering than under watering 3% hydrogen peroxide -- spray the soil surface Chamomile tea -- drink a cup, and then use the used tea bag to make another cup -- spray on soil cinnamon -- sprinkle a little on soil...this helps keep the fungus gnats away. Don't get discouraged. I had quite a bout with damping off and peppers. Keep asking questions. It's the cheapest way to learn. Kevin By the way -- you learned already. Keep the shoplights about that distance from the top of the plants. Just right above them without touching. :)

First my heartfelt thanks to Anita for her warm and caring comment. It meant the world to me. Much I don't remember back then, and either I or the paper got the detail wrong about the bed/machine. Bernadine had a younger sister, I remember, thought her name was Brenda, didn't sound right, maybe it was Glenda. I have thought over the years what a terrible ordeal it would have been for the family, the caring, the moving to CA and the constant sorrow and stress. I know what it is to lose a child, lost my son in December 2012 under vastly different circumstances, and I will never get over it. It was fourth grade, the fall of 1950. The family moved to Davenport from Buffalo or Linwood, and Bernadine may have started a little late that year. February 1951 was still fourth grade, and I don't think Bernadine returned to school after that Valentine's Day I mentioned in one of my posts. Then was the unsuccessful surgery in Iowa City. Bernadine would have been in a coma for at least six years before she died. There are probably still some here who remember her. It is painful to think that so much has been learned and new diagnostic methods that she could be saved were it to happen now as they are able to save to many heart patients. It was a blessing for Anita to be born the year after her death, and she was no doubt much welcomed and loved, but no child can ever replace another. So thank you again Anita for responding to my old post. And hope I didn't say anything wrong or offensive. About the roses. I had my own website and had an html page full of my "finds" where I found most of them, and how they looked after I got them rooted. The best I can do is post them to my flickr photo stream. Some you can kind of figure out but most will be a jumble. See if this link works to my flickr account. There should be 29 or so rose photos. I tried some months back to upload a couple photos to houzz and failed. Sandy, Love your gardens, your hostas are to die for and your flowers are so pretty. Love how you mix the shrubs, vines, flowers, ground covers, and hostas all together. I also love your statuary! I have a bunny garden and a cat garden. Your bunny with the carrots and those cats by the trellis are sooooo cute!!!! Wish I could find something that cute. We just don't seem to have them here in my area. Everything seems to be just ordinary here. Did you find them locally or buy them on the internet or maybe mail order? Great Gardens!!!

Hey Fran - The Flying Saucers (as most Ipomoea tricolor) usually have 5 ribs supporting the corolla,but if the bloom only produces 4 ribs,the blooms take on the square look...I think it's an interesting look,although I haven't seen any that will produce square blooms consistently...yet... The Ipomoea purpurea that you posted is what I have been calling a 'solid' flaked... http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/95591/ the background is mostly solid coloration with darker streaks in it... The Ipomoea tricolor Heavenly Blue can often show signs of impaired pigmentation along with some possible tissue damage to the delicate corolla membrane when the temperatures drop...the corolla can have difficulty opening and the bloom tips usually get the 'frostbite' an result in the usual blue pigmentation being replaced by the look of the 'frostbitten' fuchsia...the same color can appear if the tissue has the upper layer 'torn' during difficult openings or otherwise sustains any damage...I see it as part of the general color changes that Autumn brings... The Ipomoea purpurea in the last photo has hige genes...these can often show entire corollas with various degrees of extra corolla tissue becoming shredded to create the frills that spice up the rear of the bloom...the hige gene can also skip a generation... Those are beutiful. Blue frost must be a container mg. It does not seem to want to climb? I have a morning glory right now that was purple and now is pink. I am losing my mind with these. That trellis is constantly changing. I have a new bloom on it with 2 inch blue flower. Next year I am going to be more careful. I love your flowers...... Very Nice! Barb

Barb, blue frost is a vine and growing up the fence. The first flower just decided to bloom down low to the ground.

I find that purple MG flowers can turn pink later in the day.

Fran - Nice blooms,although I have not seen real "Summer Skies" since I grew them myself in the early 70's...

The seeds offered on ebay originated with a friend of mine in Texas and we at the time of the photo and seed distribution had 'joked' that some people would try to pass these off as "Summer Skies"...and low and behold...it happened...on ebay...

I personally grew the original "Summer Skies" and it has not been brought back...

Summer Skies had absolutely zero darker coloring along the primary folds and despite some well thought out or poised photos,the supposed 'summer skies' still has darker pigmentation along the primary folds...

Perhaps is was the lighting,but the leaves in the 1st photo look decidedly more yellow as compared to the 2nd photo...

The darker pigmentation along the primary folds indicates that this is yet but a lighter version of "Heavenly Blue" and not (the still MIA) "Summer Skies"...

Nice photos nonetheless...

Hi Ron,

Well I'll be you no what. Yup the seeds did come from the person on e-bay that claims to have the "summer skies" lost for all time bit and my friend fell for it.

The bloom in the 2 pics is the same bloom and just the lighting difference and a lousy camera that doesn't always give a good color. Sometimes the color is accurate in one part of the pic and not the other.

The lighter sky blue flower is an accurate color on the early morning bloom, but the leaves are not an accurate color.

For whatever reason, must be the angle of the sun at the time, both the flower color and the leaves are an accurate color.

Vine is growing far from what was described on the e-bay sale. Just a puny single vine, not any branching and has only had 3 flowers on it. all the same AM color and PM color as the pics showed in the pics I took.

It is a pretty flower though and pretty color blue, both morning and afternoon.

UNLIKE, my pink silk, which has now just had it's 3d bloom and is pink, pink, pink, not that beautiful blue.
I will save you some seeds of it if I get any pods and seeds. I do remember your instructions for bringing in the vines with the pods to ripen in water and it does work.

Here are the pics of the so called "summer skies" MG that went with the ebay sale. I have the ebay seller's name saved as wel.
