Why do we spend so much time, effort and $$$$ gardening?
Comments (27)I wholeheartedly agree with all that has been said, but here's another wonderful thing about gardening. We moved into a brand new neighborhood five years ago, and homes are still being built all around us. As new neighbors come, I am out in my yard "doing". It's easy to say hello, and strike up a conversation since you're out anyway. As a matter of fact, I planned a streetside flower border for that express purpose. I want to know my neighbors! I am very proud to report that although this is a pretty pricey, gated community, so far every neighbor, but one, does at least part of their own gardening and lawn care. I believe it's "peer pressure". I was here almost first. I enjoy it, I'm proud of it, and I share plants and tips. Gardening has brought us together as a community. Just tonight the OB/GYN across the street who had never owned a lawn mower till he moved here, brought me two bare-root DAYLILIES that he and his wife bought at the garden show they attended on their vacation last week! He bought a dozen for himself and has already planted them! I personally consider that a triumph! :) Gardening is about the perfect hobby in my opinion. It can be expensive, but it can also be very inexpensive. It can be exotic, spiritual, AND practical. Virtually any age, gender, educational level or social class can do it. There's a place for the artistically inclined, for the o-c collector, and for the totally practical types. You are never too young and (almost) never too old. You can garden if you own acres of land, and garden if you only have a single pot. And finally...I feel very close to God in my garden. After all, that's where life began....See MoreHow much coffee grounds do you feed?
Comments (13)my daughter and i did alot of research about a week ago online. the general thing we noticed was it depends on a couple things. in the end we came to the conclusion that starbucks coffee grounds, (they give away the used for free just ask for it) are PH 5. how ever i can't say all coffee is the same. with that said if you are putting coffee straight from a new can of coffee into your bin thats more acidic. the acid is in your cup of coffee not as much is in your already used coffee grounds. yes they do heat a bin fast and hot!! i am trying my own experiment. i have a 4'x4'x4' wood bin, it sits in my back yard. we do get cold weather here in upstate ny. i am using alot of used coffee grounds, one bail of straw, alot of shredded leaves, newspaper, cardboard (courigated and egg cartons, drink tray), as well as kitchen scraps as much as i can get, i also begg my friends, relatives, neighbors. my goal is to keep my bin from freezing using no man made heat. so far i have a 20 to 30 degree temp warmer inside my bin from out side temps. so far so good, the bad weather still ahead. enjoy your worms, hope i have helped at least some. good luck all!...See MoreWhy so much oil in carrot cake recipes?
Comments (33)I don't remember who posted this recipe or the link to the recipe, but it is very, very good. Although it has no added sugar and is lower in carbs (great for diabetics like me), it's not low in fat or low in calories. I usually make mini-muffins rather than a cake, for portion control. I haven't yet made the frosting, so I can't comment on it. The Fantabulous Whole Wheat Carrot Cake 16 servings in 9"x13" pan (12g net carbs; 15g total carbs including 3g fiber) 24 mini-muffins (8g net carbs; 10g total carbs including 2g fiber) 2 cups white whole wheat flour, sifted 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 cup Splenda for baking or 1 Splenda Quick Pack for even fewer carbs 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (I like more) 4 eggs (I use jumbo eggs) 1 cup canola oil (or substitute with some apple sauce) 2 cups grated carrots 1 cup unsweetened crushed canned pineapple, drained Combine dry ingredients. Beat oil and eggs until frothy; stir in carrots and pineapple. Mix wet ingredients with dry until just mixed - do not over mix. Put into greased baking pans of your choice. Bake at 350° - 15 min for mini-muffins; 25-30 min for 8"x8" pan; 30-40 min for 9"x13" pan. Cool in pans several minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire rack. Sugar-Free Cream Cheese Frosting 1 1/2 cups cream cheese (1 1/2 8 oz. brick) 1 1/2 tbs. butter, softened 16 packets of Equal (or less to taste) 2 tsp. vanilla 0-2 tbs. milk to thin frosting if needed. Let cream cheese softened to room temperature. Add softened butter and beat with mixer until creamy and smooth. Add vanilla and sweetener....See MoreSo exactly how much weight have you gained?!?!?!
Comments (27)I lost about 10 pounds in two weeks (it seems like) after our flood (picture me going back and forth about 20 times a day between the flooded apt. and the temporary rental with a large red shopping cart moving china and other misc. delicates while the movers threw everything into boxes). To say nothing of having to walk up 27 flights at least 5 times in the day before they got the elevators working again! But now, 9 months later in a tiny rental with no dining table (we eat in shifts at a bar height kitchen passthru) and many meals in restaurants (gives us a break from said tiny apt.) and weeks and weeks of stressful mold remediation and a fire/flood contractor from HELL - I have gained about 8 pounds back. I'm counting on the move back (in approx. 3 months) to help lose the weight (more trips with the red shopping cart)...See MoreRelated Professionals
