foundation planting advice

I am redoing my front beds, and I need some advice for what shrubs to place on either side of my front entrance. My house faces north, so it's shaded for much of the day, but it does get some morning and late afternoon sun. Right now I have compacta nandina there, but it is almost the same color as my brick, so it just doesn't stand out enough. I would like to have a green evergreen against the house, and then plant a few 'Valentine' roses in front of that. (I think that the roses, being further out from the house, would get adequate sunlight.) The rest of the foundation planting consists of Burford hollies at each corner, some dwarf yaupons, Indian hawthorns, and a 'Bloodgood' Japanese maple where there is an architectural accent. But, I'm stumped as to what to put near the entrance that would fit with the rest. Does anyone have any favorite foundation plants? I'm thinking two more Burford hollies, but that seems a bit boring. Thanks!
