I'm so excited - bought some roses!

I was visiting my dad in East Texas this past weekend and drove up to Chamblee's Roses in Tyler (I had a gift certificate that was burning a hole in my pocket) to get some roses.

I bought:

climbing Souvenier de Malmaison

Mrs. B. R. Cant

Square Dance - a Dr. Griffith Buck rose - amazing fragrance and georgous bloom

I'm putting the climber on my pergola over the front walkway and the other two in my backyard - when it gets dry enough to plant. Most of my gardens are natives and adapted plants, so this will be a nice foil to have these roses, especially a second rose in the front. I already have a Belinda's Dream in the front. In the back, I already have a Double Knockout and a Pink Knockout in my new rose garden in addition to a found rose that I took cuttings last year. I have no idea what it is yet since it should bloom for the first time this spring. I had two out of five cuttings from that rose survive and gave one to my dad since I didn't need two.

Anyway, I am really excited to see how these grow and bloom for me this year. I'll be sure to take pictures and post them once they get going

Enjoy your roses! I just love them but have had no luck growing them where I am at. I have thought about getting some minis and growing them in containers. I did that when I lived at home in Pearland.

i have a climbing sdlm right now there are about 10 blooms on it (pretty long lasting blooms) and they are "smelling up" my entire back yard
here in cypress, it usually starts blooming in March, puts on a grand display in april and blooms off and on all summer spring is absolutely glorious for this rose
not a lot of bs if it is a healthy rose

You are all so wonderful! Thank you for all the kind comments. I have been hitting the thrift stores like a mad woman! I've found all kinds of neat things but got a bit distracted by the hypertufa forum so have decided to work on a concrete/hypertufa totem with my thrift store finds - I just love concrete!! Tried to make a concrete sphere today but it didn't go as well as I had hoped. So... I have changed my game plan and will attempt it again! I'm hitting the swap meet this weekend to start collecting rusty shovels for another project I have in mind. So many projects :)

Man, I can't believe all the stuff you guys do to germinate these babies. I like my method of just sticking them in the starter greenhouse and setting it in the breezeway. I guess if you don't have a cold room or area like that to put them, it is necessary to refrigerate them. I'm just so excited about them popping up in the starter cells without any fuss. I see new seedlings popping up all the time. I had one whole section of the cells that I was afraid weren't going to do anything, but when I got home for lunch today, another new baby had begun to emerge in that section, finally! I filled up two more of those 72-cell starters last weekend, and I can't wait to see what they produce. My biggest baby already has split and is branching out in two directions!! I'll have a tiny rose "bush" soon!! That one is from ELSIE MELTON. My best germinator so far tho, seems to be LAVANDE. There are 6-7 of them! I can't wait to see how different each one will be. This is so much fun!!

Yes, slipping can be scary, and it can happen so fast. Last year I was taking photos and slipped on the terrace and fell, again luckily wasn't hurt and finished taking my pictures. It was some mesh to city had put down to hold until the grass grew back, lost all of the grass anyway, don't know why. Anyway, my house shoes are comfy, warm but slippery, so I make an extra effort to put on my best camping boots when there's any chance for ice out there. Snow is not such a big deal, often tramp through it instead, but not 20 inches of the stuff for sure. I saw some of those cleat things at the store but wasn't sure they would fit over my boots. I thought last winter was pretty long and weary, but this one is as well, just different.

Yeah, my neigbhors asked me how I was able to achieve that many plants. They saw me working on the garden around early March. They were curious about the garden beds I was making. They saw the milk jugs. I explained to them what it was and also gave them the Wintersown site. I actually watched their reactions when they saw it. They didn't pay much attention to it kinda like "oh, ok". However, when plants started to come out/bloom, they went back to me and asked, "was that from the tiny greenhouse". :) I'm going to make more beds maybe by fall once my knee gets better. :D Thanks mnwsgal! :)

Yeah, I did do some research on these and know that the climbing Souvenier is actually healthier than the shrub type - according to Dr. William Welch.

One of the best things about roses is how much they give you to look forward to--the first buds in spring, the scent as you pass by, and of course a nice bouquet for you or a friend. You chose wisely at Chamblee's (it is hard not to, with their selection and helpful staff) and will have years of enjoyment from your "new" roses. I think I need a climbing Souvenier . . . .

Well, even though it hasn't grown in my garden yet, I can tell you that it grows to about 12 feet so is fairly manageable if you have proper support. I'm going to love having it growing over my pergola in front. Hopefully the neighbors will also enjoy it too.

i bought 3 griffith bucks at Arbor Gate March 8 and put them in huge pots (24 inches in diameter and 30 inches deep)

I got quietness, dorcas and malaguena (don't think i spelled that right)
dorcas has one huge beautiful bloom
i hope they do well!!

Sam-my mom plants all her roses in pots-she can control the soil that way.
