Toilet paper roll cardboard in worm box?

Hi all,

Wondering if you can put the used toilet paper roll cardboard in the worm box as a "carbon"? I always feel sick about throwing these away to head in to a landfill!

We don't use scented or lotioned toilet paper, so the little bits that might be left on the roll are just plain toilet paper.

certainly - best chopped up a bit and kept wet, like any other wood pulp product, it needs to decompose, and it will

We throw away almost NO paper products (ok there are bits of paper left on the little plastic envelope windows that get thrown away.) What doesn't get used in the worm bin goes into the regular compost bin. I know many people worry about the inks and such on cereal boxes and other paperboard that is glossy but I figure the compost is a better way to deal with it than any other way. So far none of it had hurt our worms but we have only had them a month or so.

I tried it and they alternated between drying out completely and getting mouldy. Also the compost fell out of the bottom and the whole thing was a sorry mess. I'm sure there are advocates of "bog-roll-planting" out there, but for plants with long roots (e.g. sweet peas) I now use 500ml yoghurt pots - they're nice and deep. Yes, the plant has some root disturbance, but it doesn't make a huge difference, in my opinion.

Albert, they don't come apart when they are completely planted next to each other and under soil. You can't use them as self-contained pots! If you look at the last picture on the first post, you can see them in the lasagna pan and kitty litter box. There is no way for them to fall apart.... that is until you take them out to plant. Then they might, but by that time you're done anyway! My husband built me a cold frame out of PVC pipe. Inside the cold frame, I have a couple of skids/pallets to keep the containers up off the ground. (A couple of years ago I had my containers on the patio and some slugs found their way inside! The nerve!!) The total cost for the cold frame was about about $20.00. It comes apart for easy summer/fall storage. Living in a condo, the neighbors wouldn't like to see me set up my old recyclables in full view on my patio. I have to at least try and be descrete... well somewhat anyway! (complain to me, they WILL be rewarded with a w/s plant)

I have tried using them for root crops--with Nancy's shaping method, thanks!--but the seedlings languish. I think the cardboard must draw nitrogen from the soil, or that there is some growth retardant in the cardboard. It happened when I made cardboard dividers in a larger pot, too. In both cases, the cardboard was completely surrounded with moist soil, so I don't believe drying out wast he problem. Sweet peas, on the other hand wouldn't necessarily be bothered by the nitrogen problem. I don't know if they are N producers in the seedling stage, though.

Certainly if cardboard is your thing you can get all you want at places like wallmart. I see stacks of it on carts and all I have to do is ask for it. But a lot cardboard is not my thing. I will use some but much more newsprint as it is just easier to handle. As opposed to some others I do add peat to mine as I always have a lot on hand as I use it for plant mixes sometimes. I prefer it over coir as with coir I always find long strands left that doesnt get used come harvest. I usually mix peat, newsprint, coffee grounds, compost, cardboard. But Im always adding newprint as a cover layer for added food.

We put most of our toilet and paper towel rolls into the recycling bin, however once in a while I'll stuff the inside of a paper towel roll with previously frozen fruit scraps such as cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple etc...
The worms go crazy for this and within a few days, there's no trace of any fruit or paper towel roll left.

I put in a chipboard egg carton recently, and it disappeared very quickly.
