Comments (6)I'm not totally sure why you don't just recycle the cardboard. Your kitchen, trees, etc. should be able to give you as much compost as you need. Recycling is better for the planet as fewer trees will need to be cut down and less energy is used when recycling than logging. If you want to compost it, why not recycle it then buy tissue and paper towels made from recycled paper and use that as compost, this was the maximum value is squeezed from all the trees that are cut down to make paper....See MoreNewspaper in a home paper shredder???
Comments (7)IIRC, it tends to clog in the gears since the paper is so thin... I think my wifey / DW / whatever has found just about every way there is to break a crosscut shredder having gone through three of them now. lol A slightly easier way that might still be easy on your hands is to let the newspaper soak overnight in a wheelbarrow / similar large-volume type container in enough water to cover the paper twice over. Or, in otherwords, about an inch or two more water than there is paper in there... At that point you can take a paddle-whip (attachment for a power-drill) and mix it into the water and turn it back into pulp. Just think of it as a "brown-water" - just be careful of using that term around non-composters or they'll think you're referring to something else....See MoreBest Paper shredder for ($100
Comments (10)I've settled on torn corrugated cardboard too. I tear into pieces two or three inches square, and that size plus the corrugation helps to keep more air in the compost. These days I do almost equal parts by volume of food and cardboard. My pieces may be coarser than necessary, but the very fine confetti-like output that you want for security's sake from a shredder will, as others note, tend to clump when moist. (Re shredders, it's great to hear that people have found bargains and it's probably worth checking Craiglist and ebay and so forth. After going through four or five over the last decade, my own experience, FWIW, is that the cheap ones have such meager rates of flow that you end up not using them -- or they break. We've ended up with a powerful Fellowes MS-460Cs, which is almost as convenient as tossing stuff in the wastebasket.)...See MoreRestarting my Can-o-Worms
Comments (2)If you have a stable nearby, go and get a bucketful of aged horse manure. If you have a paper shredder, shred enough corrugated cardboard to fill a tray. If you just HAVE to have coir, you can find it on line or at pet stores. Peat moss can be found at a home improvement store. But buying bedding is kind of silly. If you are determined to spend money, spend it on a good paper shredder. Since you are probably going to feed your kitchen scraps to the worms, I would go with cardboard. Horse manure by itself already has a balance of C to N, so adding kitchen scraps will throw the balance off. But some horse manure or partially finished compost in the bedding will help the worms adjust to their new environment quickly....See Morebillr12
