You'll never guess what I saw at HGC...

that is, Houston Garden Center by the way...

I saw in the parking lot several large potted coconut palms?!? Is that not strange? Those things can hardly stand cool temperatures much less freezing. I guess you could plant them as annuals if you're super rich, LOL. It's kind of funny because I'm always on the lookout for palms that look like coconut palms but are hardier and this time I found the real thing!

Anakaleki, do you freeze often in Friendswood?
I thought they just suffered damage in a brief freeze not die, is that not so?
I would never be able to have them here. My DH would die for one tho

Better you Edna than me. After all my recent run in with snakes if I never see another one it will be just fine with me. LOL I've also seen an abundance of toads and frogs with spring. I can't walk without having to be careful where I put my foot. The other day I killed two of them by accident. I ran the lawn mower over them, I think they were doing something nasty because one was on top of the other and that's how they died. Poor things, I felt so bad, but this place is running a muck with frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, LOL and who knows what all else. The Beavers were attempting to take over the lake and we had to go beaver hunting. They were cutting all the trees down and they were falling into the lake/pond making a dam and so forth. They had to go......we ran them off to the neighbors ponds. LOL Isn't nature just wonderful?. You just never know what your going to see lurking around in the darndest places. Happy Gardening, Marian

Hi kathy, sorry for my delay in my response, I have been so over whelmed with excitement with all the stuff I've received I told my wife I don't know where to start or finish. She told me just start at one corner and go around the yard. Lol.. I am really excited tho I've gone to H/D to get soil,.perlite and now I can start filling pots and making more cacti & succulent projects :) Kathy so this greyish colored plant, is it easily propagated by cuttings the and what are the watering trixs? & does it like full sun or bright light? And thank you for your experience too, its much appreciated. Rosemarie, thanks again as always, your help with the plants names is invaluable. This last picture is a nice wheel barrel pot carrier that also was part of the load, of can't wait to get all settled in there is just so many pots and other goodies I haven't even posted half of um. Resident Land Turtle - You'll Never Guess What He Likes to Eat!

Go back and read the titles and descriptions and you'll find out. ;) I can't give you the answer because it will give it away for everyone else. That turtle goes all over my place. I find him up in the potager and way up in the statue garden too. He gets around! Here's a picture of another Ornate Box Turtle that frequented my place several years ago: Same species, but with the yellow head instead of black and orange. I think he is very pretty! You can tell this one is a male - he has orange eyes. Females have yellow to brown colored eyes. I took a series of photos of this turtle, too. My big fluffy gray Tabby, "Puddy Tat", was very intrigued by him. as was my dog, Mike. I got quite a number of very cute pictures of them. I can post them if anyone is interested in seeing them. We have another land turtle too. It is called, "Three-toed Turtle", for obvious reasons. Only three toes on each foot. They do not have the pretty colors or patterns on their shells - kind of mulkety-dung-green-brown, like the color of an army helmet. Think of an army helmet with legs, a head and a skinny little short tail, and you pretty much have it! (hehehe) My close-encounters with the wildlife are part of what I enjoy most about working in my gardens. ~Annie

Doodle, I know you said you could not get orders of protection for the girls. BUT I wonder if YOU couldn't go apply for one for yourself; get one on BM and on her creepy BF. I think this situation is certainly volatile enough that you could justify getting one. Just say violence + drugs on the paper and I think the judge will grant you an ex parte order. THAT way if BM or her BF show up, you can call the police ASAP and they will take it extremely seriously. If you have an ex parte order, and they show up at YOUR house, even if it is to "see the girls," they WILL be arrested. I think you need to plan for the worst here. Not trying to scare you, but anytime drugs are involved, the potential for escalating violence is always there. As far as BM being blameless in this situation...nope, she's not. Yeah, she is mentally ill, but she is also choosing to abuse drugs and remain in an abusive relationship. She walked out of rehab. That was a choice.

There are a bunch of them out here in the suburbs of San Antonio. All dead after the string of freezes. I don't know why people think they can plunk them down and they'll live. I suppose it's because most of us are from so cal and while a lot of the same plants that grow out there do well here palms are not one of them. They look really bad dead too. Most people who have them planted them in groups of 5 or so around their pools. You can see all the dead leaves poking up high over the 6' privacy fences. Yuk!

I picked up coconuts to use around one of the flowerbeds one year on the beach. Two of them sprouted. They would have made it if I'd bothered to water them.
I'm going to see if I can get some to sprout this year again, the seaweed is just starting to move in, seabeans and cooconuts aren't far behind!

I heard some varieties are better at withstanding brief freezes but I'm not sure how they would take the long-term cool/cold temps of winter. We do get freezes on occasion but it's mostly frost. The thing is, if the fronds are being damaged by frost every year, I don't think they would every be able to recover fully even after an entire growing season because it takes so long for them to put on new leaves. It would be neat just to try though, maybe on the island ; )
