Success with Vigna Caracalla in a Pot?

I have a 3 inch pot of one of these and would like to know what size of pot I should put it in? I usually pot up one size at a time but I have heard these do not like to be in pots at all... Since I can't putting it in the ground this year isn't an option, should I just put it in a huge pot? Please let me know if any of you have had success keeping corkscrew vine in a pot. Thanks

I remember seeing some threads awhile ago from people growing them in pots. You can grow anything in a pot.

The main issue is that often overpotting can kill a plant faster than underpotting. You could try that 3" pot vine in a 5 gallon (or 10" - 12") container to start and see how it does with establishing a larger root system. If you want to go larger, then you will really need to get a good soil/potting media mixture that drains perfectly. Otherwise, once established in the larger container, it could probably go into a half-barrel size container.

Also make sure that you give it a support to climb on like a trellis, etc.

I grew one in an eight inch pot last Summer and it was amazing.It completely covered the front of a 15ft deck and the fragrance was amazing.I cut it back and brought it indoors for the Winter.It did start to produce new growth tis year,but unfortunately the new growth has died off. I am hoping it will recoup,but if not I have some started from seed. I absolutely would not be without this vine now it's awesome!

By board fence, do you mean a solid board fence or rails? I've not had experience planting vines against solid board fences. The Cup and Saucer vine I always planted so that it would climb up to the porch rails and twine around and the length of them. I plant two - three vine plants in the ground at the bottom of the porch, provide supports of pieces of odd wire fence for them to grow up so they can reach the porch rails. The rails have pieces of wooden trellis nailed between the top and bottom rails. The vines grow on those. I have never planted Corkscrew Vine before, so this will be a learning experience. Perhaps it won't grow tall enough or spread out enough to cover the porch trellis - or maybe it will go out of control! Just have to wait and see. There is a very good Vine forum on GW that may be able to answer your questions better.

I have had both kinds. The vigna did not get enough light and bloomed very few blooms. It was at the corner of the front porch at the other house and the neighbor's trees grew a lot that year. The Phaseolus grew like kudzu and over whelmed a nearby buddleia and both died the next winter. Which was not a typical winter for us. Hard to describe a scent. Like Goldielocks finding her bed... Not too stong, but not too wimpy. I remember it as pleasant and not overwhelming I had to be near it to smell it. Maybe similar to freesia. I am very sensitive to scents. I recently gave away a tall shrub because the scent nauesated me. Kathy

In your zone I would keep it in the spot that gets the most sunlight to encourage flowering. I ordered one from parks last year and it flowered the same year toward the end of the summer. Mine really took off this year. I think it only got about 10 ft or so last year. You will have to protect the pots by bringing them in during the winter months they develop a tuber underground. I am trying to water root some cutting from mine now to see what happens. How is your vine doing now? ~Lenette

Hi, I have a vigna growing like crazy around an old step ladder. Its under the house eave, gets part sun and shade. Its planted in the ground so it does get lots of water from our rainy season. During the dusk hours we like to sit outside and enjoy its sweet fragrance. Good luck, Sylvia

I grow my huge tuber in a 12 inch black nursery pot and it blooms itself beyond belief and gets huge!

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I will put it in a 8 inch pot to begin with , and keep moving it up as needed. I will use potting soil with a lot of perlite mixed in. Anyone know what type of soil they prefer? Alkaline vs. acidic? I am really looking forward to growing this. I hope I get as good of results as you all did :)

I know I am a little late on this but I wanted to see if anyone could post pictures of this plant in bloom covering porches, etc. I am new at "attempting" to grow this plant and can not find any pictures that are not just of a bloom or two. I am just curious as to what the big picture looks like with these plants.
