Seems like I just started a thread for July! LOL! It is too hot (90s & up to 101) not to mention the humidity so I won't be sending anymore plants unless it's for a trade I've already had set up. The a/c hasn't worked in my car in 2 years so when I get home, I strip down to next to nothing & hole up in my bedroom under the a/c. Maybe not a pretty sight but at least I'm comfortable! LOL! P.S., I went ahead & mailed for August right after July since it's soooooo hot here.

As always, please post here when you receive from your secret pal. I don't necessary have to know when you do your sending but I do want to know when you receive. Likewise, the person who went to the trouble to buy/dig up/whatever for you, then mailed, etc. is waiting to hear if you received it.

I would like to chime in here too!!! I originally thought of this swap because someone else wanted to start it & then no one heard anything else about it. I was already gearded up & excited about being in a swap but when it became obvious it wouldn't take place (& no other sucker volunteered), I decided to host one. I had alot of family problems going on, alot of stress - dealing with an alcoholic, 2 pre-teen & teenagers, a brother with bipolar disorders, etc. - I just wanted to go to my mailbox & pull out something NOT a bill or credit card application or a letter from someone wanting me to hold their millions. A little something to wonder about, does it come today? everyday when I go to the mailbox. By the response of the original thread I wasn't the only one. Money's tight for me but I do have a "gardening budget". Sorry Secret Pal, but most of my stuff comes from places like Big Lots, Fred's, & other dollar-type stores. Or out of my yard or from the woods or ditch around my house (my kids are so embarrassed because I carry a shovel in my car). I don't want anyone to think they have to spend alot of money because it looks like others have spent & sent alot. Have you seen some of the trade lists some of these traders have? Some of them are like little nurseries themselves! I agree with everyone posted above. DaWiff, you & a few others have volunteered to be second pals. I got alittle confused with who were the foster pals & who weren't. I didn't want fosters to have to turn around & send to second pals. I've reassigned pals on an as needed basis. Pals not sending after a few months has been let out of the swap. I can only take your word for it if you say you mailed to your pal, but if your pal tells me they didn't receive something than I take their word. I can only give someone so many chances. As you all know, I don't have access to a computer all the time. My computer modem was fried in a storm & we haven't been able to buy a new computer. Therefore, I go to the library to post on GW, but since they don't allow email, I go to my sister's & her boyfriend's about once a week or so. So, I can't very well complain when people don't respond to my emails as soon as I'd like them too. I'm not able to respond as quickly as others would like me to either. I do however have a problem with someone never responding to an email or emailing another person. I believe I emailed everyone the rules of this swap back in the beginning along with information about their pal so that all the information would be in the same place if you wanted to print it out or something. It isn't fair for someone to receive something & then not send to their pal. As was mentioned above, life gets in the way so maybe one month you're late or can't send as much. I have asked that you at least send a card. I do not check your name off as receiving for the month until you post on the thread or email me. So if I have listed a name as not receiving than that person needs to post or send me an email. I emailed several people a day or two ago about this. Cassie, I am so sorry for your recent losses. I won't say all the normal stuff because I'm sure you're sick of hearing it, but I will say this: Remember that God doesn't give us anymore than He thinks we can handle, and every trial we have to endure makes us stronger. SandysGardens, I'm sorry I can't email you privately. I was under the impression that your pal was sending something & possible January & February in the same box. I was told your pal was very busy the month of January & just forgot. I know that's no consulation when you get nothing after sending something. I will clear this up & possibly reassign you to another pal - depending on your pal's reasoning. I am sending you a box (hush! yes I am!) because even if you do receive from your pal, two months is a long time to wait. I do hope you will decide to stay in the swap & give it another go, but I will understand (like everyone else)if you decide enough is enough. But I really hope you decide to stay in! Let me say how good it makes me feel to pick out something for my pal. I can hardly wait for them to get it & post on GardenWeb so I know if they liked it, hated it, whatever. I don't understand how some people can get things in the mail, knowing that they should send something out in return, & not do so. Maybe I've gone overboard giving people chances - I will more than likely stop because I'm not the one who's getting a raw deal. I thought I had stressed & restressed to everyone to please post or email me when you receive something. I understand that sometimes you forget, but do it when you remember. I can honestly say that I probably will not be hosting another swap unless I get another computer (which the hubby says will be soon, yeah!), maybe never. I apologize for this being so long. I wish I could take away the hurt feelings, resentment, & anger traders have gotten because of this swap. I will do my best to straighten any screwups. Kathy

Hello, All!!! I hope none of you have sent me an email becauce I haven't been able to check my email (if I don't hurry up & get another computer of my own I'm going to scream!). The sister's boyfriend's computer had to be worked on due to the 500+ viruses he had (he blamed email but I told him downloading music could open up a computer for viruses too). Anyway, I'll check it soon, I promise! I received the following from my pal: A very pretty card with "Handmade" on back. SP, did you make it? There's a black & yellow bird on a tree or shrub & it has a red flower. It's very pretty, in fact, I'm putting it in a picture frame. Pal, if you made that yourself I am impressed! I also got a package of dianthus 'Arctic Fire' seeds, which were on my want list. A cute little ladybug magnet, an iris plant, & some floating candles. She also sent a battery-operated, handheld fan, which is most appreciated since it's been so hot here. I wasn't thrilled when it got tangled up in my hair, although it would have been hysterical if it would have happened to someone else (say, my husband or one of the kids!). I also got a box of 50 incense cones with a ceremic incense holder "to keep insects at bay" printed on the box. Again, most appreciated since this is the South & we're plagued by all sorts of insects (& the husband's chickens obviously aren't doing their job). Thank you so much secret pal! I loved everything! My secret pal sent a lovely surprise box again. A nice card with a short note. A very cute cat planter holder that wiggles, or I don't know what to call it, it is not a cat pot holder. It is a wire cat that wiggles that holds a 6 inch clay flower pot, included. I will have fun filling that pot! There is personalized stationery to use with my old people I write to. Gotta be careful there, I am in that bracket! A cute book on cats, questions and answers about cats. A real nice pair of garden gloves, which will come in handy. Mine have holes in the thumbs. Why do we just hang onto the old and not replace them? Then a super nice can of nice smelling garden soaps. No plants, which was super fine, we went to Ore. & I stopped at a few nurseries, and got plants for 50% off, and for over a week, have been working on getting them into the flower beds. I am taking pictures to send her eventually. I enjoy my secret pal, and it gives us a break in our routine. Now I have another great cat book to read! Thank you so much for all you send. P.S. we have sort of adopted a stray cat a mo. ago, and sure makes me long for a new one again. This one is outside, and always in fights, a unneutered male. Last week, he got part of his ear removed and his face all gouged up, fighting with a racoon. Have a good month secret pal!

I got a lovely box from my Secret Pal today, it really cheered me up! There was a very pretty dangly made of colored glass that is already hanging outside, and some seeds (always a good choice), and the cutest Mary Englebreit cards. I loved your note too, Secret Pal, sorry it has been so hot where you are, we had some very hot days this past week too, where the heat index put us up in the triple digits, the humidity was just exhausting. Thanks for the pretty pictures of your flowers, I love the daylilies. You did offer two of them, and I have to say I would love to get them! Both of the ones that you put stars next to the photos will look lovely in my garden. This fall I am going to redo the bed by my driveway (for about the third time since I put it in) and those daylilies will look wonderful in there. This morning, as I was reading a post from Cassie, the mail delivery lady rang my doorbell. Normally she just drops the package by the door and rushes off. Today she waited for me because she needed me to move my car so that she could pull through the drive. I wanted to rip my box open right then, but had to wait 'til I freed up the driveway exit for her. The torture of it all!

The first thing to come out of the box was a lovely coleus w/a lime green center, edged in a purple which is different from any of ours. Thank you! It is lovely and promptly potted.

Pal, you must have been reading either my mind or my stomach because the next thing I came to was EXACTLY what I was yearning for on Monday - a jar of apple butter! It was a bit gooey and sticky in that area of the box because jostling and heat, and maybe air pressure changes, had caused a dent in the lid and that lid, though not unwound, had pushed off the threads on one side. Only about 10% had leaked out. I washed the jar and my hands, then promptly decided that since homemade apple butter has a long shelf life in the fridge, this would still be edible. The toast was DELICIOUS and I will continue to enjoy it until it's gone. This is not normal apple butter, but local produced where she lives. I totally love to receive and try local products.

Two other bottles were in fine shape - a specialty marinade and Mountaineer Ranch Dressing. We will all enjoy those together, but the apple butter is ALL MINE. I can use the popped lid as an excuse to keep the others out. LOL

There was a mystery plant in a plastic baggie. A water plant? It has small leaves and pods. I have no idea what it is. Someone please clue me in!

There were also three packs of seeds, none of which I already have - yellow cassia, angelica, and batwing coral tree. Cool!

Pal, I really, truly, loved my box. The bit of leak just made for more intrigue and excitement in opening it. It wasn't the way you packaged that caused it, but had something to do with the handling in transit. I love apple butter. I devour applebutter. Can't keep me away from it if I know it's there. It was ever so special to get things that you had grown and items from your local.

It also gets me really excited when I can be the first to post that my package came.

hHehehehehe I put a label in the box for the plant it is a SUCCULENT and it is called string of bananas. I think one of your children collect cactus/succulents. Cultivar name of Compositae, genus senecio and species radicans. The applebutter is made here locally in the fall and we have a produce and WV specialty market here called Capitol Market. In it are locally produced fresh fruit and veggies during summer and all year other items. A fresh meat market, fresh fish market and Suisse Chocolates made locally and/or imported from Switzerland.

The applebutter I sent is made both in the location on the bottle and here at the market in the early fall/very late summer in a big applebutter pot... and cooked all day. You guys know the kind... YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. It is especially delicious. I got the dressing because the WVU students go to the location of the plant on the bottle each year and MAKE this and all the proceeds go to help needy students who can't afford to pay for college to go. That's why the WVU label is on them and they too are made in WV. The coleus is Saturn coleus and I posted a pic of the momma plant on here. As I said the pic does not do justice to lime green color of the center. It is a saturn coleus and variety called sun coleus. It gets seeds but probably take a piece off to have as a stock plant because as I understand when I pot the plant that the seeds are not always true to the mother. I have both but keep a stock plant cause it's SOOO beautiful. I'm glad the applebutter at least made it. Whewwwwwwwwwwwwww I had them mark it fragile. If I send more I will seal the lid with packaging tape.

PS Dianna... I sent the Queen of July a peach nutmeg jam or marmalade.

Kim - those daylilies are just gorgeous! I especially like the 3 middle ones on the second post. I think I have the first one but maybe not.

Cassie - loved your canna pictures too! I have about 8 different kinds of canna, scattered in different areas of the yard. NOT ONE GOT OVER A FOOT TALL. Or bloomed. I got them all from Horne's, or Home Depot, or different traders. What are the odds that they would all have bad cannas? LOL! Just kidding. I think I should have fertilized them or something. I was going to place another order with Horne's but they were sold out of all the ones I wanted.

Cassiet - You get demerits for your post since this is a "secret" swap, & should be ashamed of yourself! Just kidding! BTW, how many pals know who their "secret" pal is? Just curious.

Cassie, canna grown from collected seed don't grow true to the parent. Each is genetically unique. I have several in the garden that I grew from wintersown collected seed. Each is different and I think they are the most beautiful canna I've seen. Lots of salmon, coral, peachy, and yellow w/red streaked throats and red w/yellow margins and throats. I think I'm more than a wee bit predjudiced about the seed grown ones because it just seems such a miracle that something so nice could be grown from seed in one growing season. I didn't even KNOW they could grow from seed until this year.

Knowing that those condiments also go toward a good cause makes them even more special. I believe in buying in season locally grown/made items as much as possible. Fresher, less energy used for shipping, and beneficial to local economies and small scale producers.

So, are you saying that these things that look like seed pods are the actual PLANT? Sorry, any notes in there were part of the gooey paper. There were some clusters of these in the baggie. The rest was green goo. It got a little crushed and I think the box was exposed to some high heat along the way. Good thing there wasn't any chocolate, 'cuz I'd have had to lick it off. ;-) The coleus are perking up quite nicely.

I thought it was so neat that the package arrived while I was reading on the other thread that you had mailed the coleus. My computer has been running painfully slowly today & pics weren't loading this morning. This go round is the first time that I was able to see your canna photos. I'm eager to see Kim's pics, too, but I think I'm going to have to do the "view image" thing, and load them one at a time. Sigh, my computer seems to be running well, but my connection is dawdling. Makes it a pain to cruise the posts.

Hehehehee my pal has known who I am since that one time when she had to take over for you for a while back in Feb or March... that is why I always say my not so secret pal!!!!

MuddyMom, YES it is a succulent however should not be green goo... if they are I will send more. They should be round and fleshy curved shaped.. thus the name... string of bananas. If they are flat and gooey then they are crushed. The thing of succulents is you let the bottom "crust" much like cactus and then they will root.

I received another great box from my pal yesterday. Thank you pal! I put the umbrella palm in the pond. I haven't planted the astilbe and foxglove yet, but I have the perfect spots picked out. I don't have to work tomorrow, so I will plant them in the morning. Don't worry about colors, my garden is definitely not color coordinated. I just see something that I like and then plant it.

What can I say, but that I have the most generous secret pal, who buys with me in mind. I received this huge box today. Hubby always hovers over me as the items are removed, he gets as much joy as I do. Unless it is because he has joy because I am enjoying myself. Oten ill a lot with liver problems. First there was a huge cast iron planter for hanging on the patio wall, extremely lovely. A big pink glass heart which I will hang in the pc room, which is a garden theme. A package of lovely notecards, which I used a few today, doing notes to my elderly people. Eight garden magazines, most of which I have never heard of, but this will give me many hours of reading pleasure. A 2006 Botanical calander, which is lovely, I love those old antique flowers! She send a lovely card with a sweet note also. She asked if I had a cat...we did, but we had to put her to sleep fom kidney failure recently, she was 13. I am praying for another one, but God has not sent one yet. We have 4 strays that live outside that we feed, guess this is home to them. I have more medical tests next week at the neuclear medical clinic which last 26 hr. Guess I shall come out glowing. My secret pal makes my month, I almost did not join as I felt ill often. But I need something to perk me up, even if it is just a pkg. of seeds. I also get a lot of pleasure in doing my secret pal's box. Our mail place refuses to send without our real name on the box as the return. Guess my s. p. has a more lenient p.o. as it comes to me from me. Thank you again secret pal and I will enjoy all that you have sent. Still drinking tea out of the special cup also! Blessings to you and have a great Aug.!

More pics this of the apricot canna now in full bloom, a very lovely orange canna that looks red on here however this is a very vivid ORANGE, and Tom D'oro never heard of this however is what the label said... a deep buttercupy color orange/yellow very beautiful. Hi secret pal, received your package on Saturday. I just love everything. The cream for very dry skin really is wonderful. I like it especially for my knees. They get so dry kneeling in the dirt. The dish towel and mit are too beautiful to use so I will just enjoy looking at them.

I'm glad to hear your son is on the mend. I'll bet it was a scary and exhausting time for your family.

I received my secret pal package last week for July. Thank you so much! I'm going to hang the wind chime as soon as I get a little extra time. I love it! Thanks also for the wonderful kitchen things....potholders and towels. They can always come in handy. :) I love reading your cards as it helps me get to know you.

In answer to your concern. Here's what's been going on. I had eye surgery to remove a cataract and insert a new lense. Then an endoscopy which showed some stomach problems. I already have severe lung disease and uncontrolled diabetes. So, that wasn't something I wanted to hear. My hubby was in a motorcycle accident almost three years ago and had his 6th surgery three weeks ago. He got an infection and is on IV antibiotics plus other medications. Last week his stomach started hurting. We went through a ton of tests and doctor visits. Today he had his gallbladder removed as it had quit working. So, things have been hectic at our house.

Last night I made "big breakfast" for the family. I had some of the MOST WONDERFUL French Toast with AWESOME Blueberry Syrup! Thank you so much Secret Pal, I love ya babe!

Kim, I gotta have that harmony daylilly. Pal, I would love to have something homemade from your garden or state, pickles or fruit would be wonderfull. I haven't done pickles since my bypass surgery, I had a great recipe for bread and butter pickles, maybe next year, I am seriously addicted to daylilies now. I too think earthly will be a td today.My puppies all have their little eyes open. anyone know where zz is? happy aug all, enjoy those blooms

Kim, your flowers are beautiful! I planted some wintersown (not sure if that's a word lol) balloon flower seedlings but they didn't make it. I'm going to try again this year.

Cassie, your cannas are beautiful too. I have some planted, but they have not bloomed for 2 years now. I'm guessing they don't get enough sun. I'm going to move them this fall.

Bonnie, I definitely have some insanity where plants are concerned (and birds). I promised myself that I wasn't going to order any plants or bulbs for the fall, but how can you pass up a coupon to get $40 worth for $20 LOL.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that my pal also sent me a great photo album. Thank you pal!

Hello Ginger,

Thank you so much for the compliment on my flowers. I think next year will be even better. This is the first year for my daylilies so some of them didn't bloom and others I just couldn't get "the perfect" shot of before they went by.

I threw together a photo album of things that bloomed in my "regular" gardens (not daylilies). Hope you enjoy it.

Woke up to my husband greeting the mail lady and a large package. What a nice surprise.....hubby kept threatening to open it and the kids weren't much help either. But me I wanted to save it for my alone time as well as when I get my eyeballs in :) Well the fam is gone now and I opened my wonderful package. My pal is great, she always seems to be right on with at least a few things each month....this months package had a gardening set (can always use those knee pads as they seem to get eaten by the dogs)as well as the trowels I am always losing, candles mmmm.. lovely scent, dolphin candle holder (I'm sure this one will disappear as soon as the kids get home), garden nippers (never seem to be able to find these either) some wonderful looking daylilly starts, and last but not least some great smelling bath goodies which I plan to indulge in this eve a definitely much needed after picking up several extra shifts at work. Pal thanks for making such an exhausted day great!!!!!

Just checking in to let my pal know I got my package. Thanks so much for the seeds. I love them, especially the malva zebrina. Did any of these seeds come from your garden? I like them all, I just looked up the Clara Curtis daisy, and it looks spectacular! A pink daisy, how cool!

Thank you also for the Catherine Woodbury daylily and the other lilies. I hope to get them planted next week.

The manicure set will also come in very handy too. I have been gathering a lot of seeds lately, and my nails are a mess!

I've been having a great but very busy August. Hope you are doing well too. BTW, I added a trade list to my member page, that includes some info about seeds that I am looking for.

Hello Pal!

I received a wonderful package today from my pal. A nice assortment of a variety of different coffees. I love flavored coffee, and will be treating myself to a pot on my day off this coming Friday. Don't worry about not sending me a bunch of plants; I know what you mean by not having a bunch ready to divide, etc. Sounds like you are really having a dry summer. We had rain through June, then a heat wave for most of July & August and now a little relief. We have set heat records here.

I figured out how to use the digital camera and how to post pics, so I will post a pic that you have requested. One is a pic of our cabin as I stand on the end of the dock and the other from my neighbors dock. The one from the neighbors dock shows the beginnings of the flower bed/strip I am starting. It will be about 75 - 100 ft long and 15 ft wide when done. I have a long ways to go, and it's a lot of clay to dig through and out. Pictures make it look a lot nicer shape than it is. Needs lots of updating.

Now to figure out how to make them smaller, they are way to big - sorry about this.

I received a wonderfull pkg from my pal today, lovely note and I got my bread and butter pickles, boy are they delicious, when I find out who you are I am sending you money to get me more. also pickled okra and homemade tangerine soap, a canna, garden flag and bookmark thankyou pal you are the best

The note along with the gift is very special.....especially the notes about the grasshoppers. I'm so glad you have them and not me.
I'll enjoy the votive candle...I do love flowers.
Got a little bottle of foaming body scrub too... smells real nice.

I did receive a wonderful package from my secret pal for August. It arrived in August but I've been too busy to get online. I always know who the package is from by the duct tape. LOL The seeds will be planted in the spring. I can't really think of any special seeds I would want right now but would really love anything.

Always love the wonderful metal hangings you send. I have everything hanging up and it looks great.

I received a lovely package last week. It looked like it had been run over but nothing was broken. The only sad thing was that I had no note from my pal. I always enjoy her notes which puts me to shame because I do not send them. I hope she is well. I did take pictures of the lovely crystal etched with a rose she sent but I have no idea how to post it so I will save that for when I can take the time. My life has been a bit hectic so I apologize for the delay in posting. Thanks, pal, you are wonderful!!

I received the July and August packages from my secret pal. I hope you are doing better pal after your stay in the hospital. I got a wonderful candle for July. It smells so good. I got a box of goodies for August. I got seeds, pots, windchimes, bath wash and lotion. Thanks pal!
