Pls help me identify this vine?

I did not garden last year, and the garden was left as-is from the 2006 year when my (now ex) husband had taken it over. It's a ton of work to clean up, good thing I have a few months! After removing massive quantities of weed-clouds (like the tumbleweed from hell, sort of!) I found these vines, growing from several stalks, in a ground-bed in front of my trellis arches.

Now these could be the 'thornless blackberry' I bought many of, that he said he planted, but I've never seen.

They could be from the one 'raspberry' we got by accident with the others and allegedly planted.

They could be poison ivy. They do have 3-leaf clusters.

On the other hand, they are alive, if purple and dormant seeming, after some of the worst freezes ever, and the poison ivy normally doesn't do well at all even in chilly weather. Also, the 3-leaf clusters, usually poison ivy, I can't remember if one or two are a different 'size' than the third leaf, these are all the same size.

I have a picture of the vines, and more of a closeup on the leaves. My celfon doesn't take very good pics and there wasn't much sun, sorry about the quality.

If someone with knowledge of fruit vines could look at this and tell if it's the berries I've been waiting for so long, that would be great. I don't want to cut all this down in my cleanup if it's a 3-4 year berry vine finally! But if it's poison ivy I definitely want to. :-) Thanks.

Good news! It's not poison ivy! It does look to be some kind of berry cane. From the photos, there's no way to tell which kind it might be, but do let them get growing. Then you can probably id them better.

And although berry canes can look like vines, they aren't really. You have to manage them a bit differently. Later, when you know what they are, you can look them up or ask.

But congrats! Not poison ivy......

Can I ask -- I have a big 4' deep, 6' high "arch" with a 4"x4" grid right next to these, used for arbor-trellis. The vines are a problem, they've grown between the fence posts and the fence of my neighbor, and I need to try and gently get them out of there. Can I sort of gently just weave them over/ through the trellis-arch? I can devote that one to it, since these are in the ground right next to it. They were not meant to be trellis though and I'll have to give that whole arch over to them. They are one of the only plants I have in the actual ground (I use cinderblock 24-36" raised beds), so now I'm in a tizzy wondering how they are surviving our lousy soil and what I should put on them to help them. :-)

I love January. I get totally garden-nuts, mostly because there is so little I can do besides clean up and winter sow. :-)

There is a "name this plant" forum, you might want to put this there also. #1 looks like daylilies #2 looks like Solanum, maybe S. dulcamara (nightshade vine.) Handling this plant makes me itchy, you might want to wear gloves/sleeves to pull it up. Unfortunately perennial. #3 bulb lilies of some type. #4 ? #5 ? looks like some kind of critter may have been eating the leaves, could be something that will pass without action, seasonal. Those who know what it is probably know what's going on with the leaves.

My grandmother was a member of the "Eastern Star" and my grandfather was a Mason... when he died the Masons did something at his funeral. I had totally forgot about that until rereading this thread. I was 9 years old when he died but still can recall the Masons walking up the aisle. I don't remember exactly what they did, but I remember being in awe of them.

One clue to tell if it is a ficus would be to nick it somewhere on the trunk and see if it bleeds white sap(latex). Another would be to look at the growth point and see if it is ficus-like. They all have similar points. A close up of that would help. Not too sure I would go with elastica(rubber tree) as a first guess,but I can't say that I would rule out that it might be a ficus of some sort. Give it a little nick,a tiny scratch will do,nothing too noticeable,...and let us know if the sap looks like milk. Also,if it IS latex,don't get it on your skin. Many react badly to it. Just a heads-up.

Good morning

I just had a look at your vine. This is the first time I have ever heard of a blackberry being beaten out be something more invasive or tougher than it. I personally love blackberries. Though I didn't know they grew in your neck if the woods, learned something new. The best suggestion I can make is to keep track of the suckers. Now that its competion has been removed they should take off like wild fire. Also beware of the thorns(unless it is the thornless variety) were ever they grab you can become infected. The same way rose thorns cause infection. The up side is they make really good pies, jams, jellies, muffins, pancakes,..... You get the idea. They grow wild here on the coast of BC. Acres and acres of them. One of the best source of free fruit in our area. That and all the other wild berries that grow here.
