Celebrity vs. Beefsteak

I came across Celebrity tomatoes supercheap so bought 12 plants. I mostly did this because the Beefsteak and Romas I planted by seed got left outside in too cold of weather and died. I did plant some more but thought they wouldn't grow quick enough so I pretty much neglected them. Well, they are taking off and am wondering if I should sacrifice some of the Celebrity (or pass them off to neighbours) or should I get rid of the Beefsteaks? Thanks. I am new to tomatoes so not very familiar with the different types - mostly the obvious - green, cherry, yellow - the very obvious.

Why not grow some of each so you can compare? I grew Beefsteak last year and in my opinion it is a much better tasting tomato than Celebrity. Celebrity was more productive however

I don't really know what the weather is like there in your zone, but I just wanted to say that when I tried growing Beefsteaks (And maybe it was just my fault, I don't really know), none of them set fruit.
I wondered why until I read in a book that Beefsteaks are notorious for dropping their blossoms in the heat, more so than other varieties; Maybe it's my zone.
But because your climate may be cooler, they might have a greater chance of setting fruit.
I'm sort of a newbie too, so I don't even know how viable my info is, but here you go.

I have both. It depends on what you want the rose to do for you. Golden Celebration is a very dramatic rose. It should be a specimen. It grows as a tall, vase-shaped fountain. The blooms are big and mostly uniform in color, ranging from a deep yellow to more of a gold, depending on the weather. Molineux is more of a bedding rose. It's much shorter and more upright than Golden Celebration. The blooms are deep gold in the center, yellow on the edges. It reblooms faster than GC. Both are fragrant, but GC is more so and the fragrance changes as the bloom matures. GC requires more attention than Molineux. Here (Central Texas)that means it needs spraying in early spring and that's about it. Molineux has never needed spraying. If I ever moved, I would want both of them again. I'd have GC as a stand alone specimen in a spot with lots of room and foot traffic nearby to enjoy the fragrance. Molineux would be in a bed or along a walkway with other plantings.

I have all three of those (Sunset Celebration, Tahitian Sunset and Valencia). Valencia is my fav of the three, but it is slow to establish, as has been said. But once established, it has enormous very fragrant blooms of a really unique gold-peach color. It's also slow to repeat, but oh so worth the wait. Sunset Celebration is kinda blah, normal, as roses go. Nothing too exciting about it. Nice flower for cutting and it holds indoors. But not too much in the scent department. I tried to replace it once with a rose called Scent-sation, which is the same color but supposedly fragrant. NOT! Don't go there. Scent-sation is a disease magnet with much smaller flowers than Sunset Celebration and also, no fragrance in it that I can detect. Why someone had the nerve to call it "Scent-sation" is beyond me. Tahitian Sunset is also okay, but the form of the flower is a little loosey goosey for my taste (and actually I think they blow faster than Sunstruck flowers). Sunset Celebration has more hybrid tea-ish form, while Tahitian Sunset acts more like a floribunda. Tahitian Sunset is also a quick repeater, but I don't consider it a cutting rose for bouquets. It's more of a garden color splash, mostly orange. I haven't had terrible disease issues with any of the three, but I do spray reasonably regularly. Kathy

Don't do any pruning beyond your regular winter pruning, which in your case probably won't be til January or so? Hard to give any advice on timing when you don't specify where you are beyond zone 9 in the US. Pruning the tops does not make a plant grow roots. It does rob the plant of the energy it would have used to grow new roots. So, just leave it alone for now. I use thorny rose or blackberry prunings to protect plants from burrowing rodents. Shove the thorniest canes into the burrows. I've also successfully used those sonic gopher repellers that you drive into the soil and they make a beeping noise. Works well enough if you put them close enough together and only try to protect a small area so the gophers or voles have some place else to go. I would think it would work for a single plant. Not a whole yard. You do have to get them all the way into the ground or you'll hear the beeping too, and the batteries need replacing every 6 months. Gophers can eat an entire root system and leave the plant just balanced on the soil with nothing holding it there. Nothing much you can do in that case. Voles don't generally eat the entire root system so the plant can recover once you convince the voles to leave the plant alone.

Beefsteak has always been my favorite. I have raised the various named ones that are all pretty similar to me from Burpee's Beefsteak, Big Beefsteak, and Big Red Beefsteak along with Supersteak and Super Beefsteak. Some have been ribbed, some smooth, some pretty round, some oblate or boat shaped, but all pretty big as a general rule, solid, and meaty with an excellent flavor. This year I am expanding that to Burpee's Porterhouse. Best I remember, their picture of them was fairly smooth, only slightly ribbed, but the first picture I saw in another thread here looks like they are more ribbed. I also tend to think of something described as a beefsteak type tomato as somewhat fitting the above description, whether it is pink, purple, yellow or gold. I save seed from selected ones and am happy with the results, but am not against checking out another plant now and then. I bought the one in the center of this . It looks like a winner to me, is loading up with clusters of three tomatoes, and continues to vigorously all the way to the top of my tall cage. I cut off a sucker to try to root it for a clone of this one. I am eager to get some ripe ones to taste. Bill P.

I just planted some Celebrities because I heard they were so reliable and relatively easy to grow. I am a newbie, too, and I have to have something at the end of all of this experience in case some of my plants, which aren't looking terribly healthy compared to those posted by others here, (altho I have some Roma's already! :-) So I am hoping for my Mortgage Lifters and Better Boys in addition to my Romas, but also planted some Celebrities (yesterday actually) to replace some sickly looking plants. Hopefully the Celebs will be a sure thing. I also planted some Park's Whoppers. A lady I spoke with while tomato plant shopping said they were her all time faves....anyone planted them?

Anyway, good luck whatever you decide!

I will take out some Celebrities as I already have takers for them and fit some Beefsteaks in. Also, anyone ever grow Stella APT - they look Roma shaped so here I am in the same position with those two. I may just make room elsewhere for the Romas. I really didn't think my second set of seedlings would do so well. Last year I gave away some seedlings for tomatoes and got complaints on how small they were - they did fine for me. I'm guessing not enough sun so I am a little nervous to offer my little guys to anyone.

If you got complaints that your tomato plants were small last year but they did fine for you, maybe they were just young. Most people are familiar with larger plants offered by nurseries. But those plants were small once, too. The ones in the little 6-packs are sometimes quite young. Sometimes that's better than an over-grown plant in a container that's too small.

To ditnc, on your question on Park's whopper. First time last year, it was early, it and big beef were my two best tomatoes. My PW seedlings this year are looking very strong. Celebrity is an old standby. I was not impress last year with bush celebrity. Hope this helps.

I think I will get rid of over half my Celebrities and put my little seedlings in I'm sure once in the ground they will take off! Thanks for the input.

Some of the prettiest tomatoes I ever grown were Celebrities. They were also the most tasteless tomatoes I have ever grown. IMHO almost any hybrid (and most certainly ANY heirloom) would be a better choice.

Beefsteak: Huge, Juicy, Great for Burgers, not alot of yields, needs good support.

Celebrity: plenty of yeilds to enjoy all season, doesn't need strong support, ripens quick, taste not as great, shorter life span than beefstake, can be grown in a container.

I have a celebrity with 1 tomato on it and a beefsteak that is taller than I am with 7 tomatoes so I would go with the beefsteak. The link below are some pictures of my container garden.
