She probably wouldn't like the smell of fish heads in the soil very much, either, but that's a very old Indian gardening technique. And the scent of fresh steer manure might be an acquired taste. Can't say I ever heard of using milk and wheat as compost, but I can't see why not. Although it would have been better to do it in the winter so the bacteria would have more time to break it down into usable nitrogen. I bet you have a lot of fat, happy worms in that soil.

Well it is composting but it has gotten too wet down there in the hole and since it isn't getting any air due to the covering it has gone anerobic and yeasty!!! That is what is causing the smell. Likely the pit isn't draining very well. You'll find several discussions on this over on the Soil & Compost forum.

There is nothing wrong with the tomatoes - eat away. But I would suggest you remove the ground covers and stir the soil in the pit - if possible without harming the plant roots - to get some air in there. You also need to cut back on the water and let it dry out some. The odor will disappear. Meanwhile enjoy the tomatoes. ;)

This is no big deal and your wife just does not understand that the plants know how to filter. Eat all those tomatoes, they are just fine and dandy, or send them to me in a box. and next time add your stinkiest ingredients in the Fall.

What do you mean by wheat and what is the milk thing? You just created a well unless you have extremely sandy/gravely soil. You want to think in layers. One layer of ground cloth is plenty. You just want to keep soil from splashing on rhe leaves. Ground cloth is fine textured and mud or worm castings can seal the pores if too wet. Air to thr roots as well as the compost is very important or you will get anaerobic decomposition That is why it can't be used to cover drainage holes in urns or pots. Air to the roots as well as the top is very important for tomatoes. I rarely ever water tomatoes. Too much water helps diseases.

Reminds me of when I planted tomatoes behind my dog kennel. Hosed the kennel off into the tomatoes every day. I have NEVER seen tomatoes that grew and produced like those did. Everyone said they would never eat them due to the "fertilizer" they were getting. They were the best tomatoes I ever grew. They were amazing.

Can't say that I've ever heard of growing tomatoes in a fermenting stink hole filled with rotting wheat and sour milk, but I have seen guys grow their tomatoes planted directly into individual kitchen waste compost mounds covered with a veneer of soil. Not my cup of tea ... but then it seems like a variation of lasagna beds aka another haven for cockroaches IMO.
