Question about weeping cherry tree

I have 2 weeping cherry trees (Prunus Subhirtella Pendula) and a small limb broke off of the double weeping cherry tree. I know they are grafted at the top to make them weep so if I propagate the limb will it make a weeping cherry tree?

That's bizarre about your cherry tree, ltilton. Maybe the Stella is only good for looks. :) Randy, well the gnats too. But the fleas are so bad where I live that I can pick up a dozen just walking from the front door to the garage. No joke. They're everywhere. Each day, I kill at least a dozen that got dragged inside. I wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt whenever I go outside now.

Definitely a bad graft with the standard cherry suckering. This happens to a lot of ornamental fruit trees. You'll have to cut the white flowered trunk off at the collar (just past where it meets the main trunk). It sounds like both trunks are the same size? That means this problem started as soon as you planted it. A picture would help a lot. Make a CLEAN cut on an ANGLE just past the branch collar. It is probably too thick to use loppers, so purchase a decent pruning saw (Lowes, HD sell these), and make a starter cut at the bottom of the branch, angling up and in toward the tree, then do the rest of the cut from the top of the branch, angling toward the bottom cut (away from the tree). The cut is on an angle to shed water. You must do a cut on the bottom first so that when you cut from the top it doesn't pull down and rip the bark along the main trunk, which can kill the tree. Do this now or wait until next year and do it in early spring before the buds break. Do not wait much longer, because right now the cherry will use it's energy to heal the wound, but if you wait until May or later it will have used most of it's energy in flowering and growing new branches and will not heal quickly at all. The standard cherry will grow about 20 feet high. Depending on the rootstock, it may even bear fruit. Standard cherries are hardy trees, and it will definitely end up killing your weeping graft if you don't get rid of it soon. As for it looking odd, don't worry, in a few years the weeping tree will grow to the other side with proper pruning. Right now the other tree is preventing it from growing that direction. Once it is gone the other side will start to thrive. The sun exposure alone will help a lot. Don't expect too much this year though, since it will be focusing its energy on healing.

Bark splitting can be caused by herbicide damage, freezing temberatures, growth cracks, mechinacal failure from weight or weather, or lightning injury. Discolored/sunken bark is often a sign of sunburn, check for cracked loose bark only on the southside of the trunk, if there only then it would be sunburn. any storms that might have caused it? You don't have any sprinklers aimed at the trunk do you- this usually causes rotting/cracking/decay. How is your soil, is it well draining or does it have a lot of clay? Cherry trees also have a low-moderate salt tolerance. My guess would be that something with weather- either sun, extreme temperatures, lightning etc. has had some effect on your tree, also, I don't think heavily spraying a trunk with fungicide is a good idea- you will most likely rot the tree if there is a cracked trunk and sitting moisture. You should have an arborist in your area come check it out. Dying lower branches can be a sign of spring growth, if there is lots of new branches some will die off, it's only natural for the larger branches to outshade the younger, or they are simply the result of the cracked bark and your tree needs care. CarolAnn, while my relations in NC grow them, I have no direct experience with them.

My recommendation would be to try it, and see what happens.

You are more daring than I, to try and grow it here.

Let us know if it works. I had a weeping cherry tree (grafted) for about 6 months (we looove weeping trees) and something hit it's trunk and all it's sapped drained out in about 5 days. I was very sad. I had a weeping redbud too but the freeze April of 07 killed it. So far the only weeping tree I've had survive for me is a fruitless mulberry.

Michelle, I saw 2 weeping cherry trees in a yard that were 6 years old and fell in love with them. They were in zone 7 and I'm barely in 8a so I hope they do well.

I have 5 weeping lavender twist redbuds so I'm pretty addicted to weeping trees.

Oh, cool can you send me a pick of your weeping trees? I saw a weeping curly willow at the place I got my cherry tree the other day. If I had the room I would have gotten one. The bare curly limbs were really neat. I bet it will be even nicer when it leafs out.

Yeah but something chunked the trunk and all that sap ran out so that's kinda like user error. I hear they don't do so well in high winds but I don't think any weeping trees do well in high winds.

Kristy, I'll send you a picture when they bloom or post it on the club site. My cherry trees are about to bloom but my weeping redbuds still have a little while.

I'll show you them when you come down.

We planted a double weeping cherry in Texas this past spring. It is leaking sap near the base and the leaves are not looking good. Any ideas? THanks.

Has anyone planted these around the Waco area? The Lowe's here has gotten some in, I would hope the buyer for our store would only stock what works here, but you never know.

Hello, I'm new to Garden Web, I saw your post when I asked about weeping cherry trees. No the tree that you get wiould not be a weeper it would grow as a normal tree that is if you can get it to root as that cherry trees are one of the hardest trees to get to root. The best way to root cherry is to air layer it. Ok ? Then you can try to bud graft the buds on to the tree upside down. Len

Don't count on anything that you buy from a Lowes, HD, WalMart or even local nurseries to automatically do well in your zone. Check them out on the internet first. Businesses that sell plants are in business to make money. Even many nurseries will sell you plants that are not suited to the local climate. If they are responsible nurseries they will tell you that the plant you are buying will be an annual in your zone, meaning it's going to die come winter. Cheryl

I have a weeping cherry (snow fountain) and have rasberry vines coming out all over. i traced the source of the vines to the roots of the the tree. anybody every hear of this?

I just bought a Weeping Cherry tree and it looks like some bug was eating the leaves and it looks like it has a rub wound on the trunk. Should I return it or will the tree grow just fine?
