New here - Questions for San Antonio gardeners

We relocated to San Antonio (north) last year and have spent the winter reclaiming our neglected yard. Now we are ready to make a plan and add some plants.

There is a spot I would like to put in either Russian Sage or Salvia Indigo Spires. I have read about each and they both seem drought tolerant and deer resistant. The spot is between the street and driveway and is very hot, no irrigation - hose water only. Lantana is already there and does well. Any experience with or recommendation for one over the other would be helpful.

We have several very dense stands of live oaks and need to decide what to do under them. Currently the entire front yard is small river rock. The leaves fall all year and look messy on top of the rocks. We want to avoid a lawn for a number of reasons. We are considering Liriope, are there any other more creative options?

Thank you.
