Anyone else out in the hill country?

Hi, is there anyone else on this board who lives in the hill country? I'm in southeastern Blanco County, and I have a big, organic vegetable garden. Right now I'm getting it ready for planting.

I've found a few things that don't do well out here: Kentucky wonder beans and such. On the other hand, tomatoes, yellow squash, melons, and arugula do very well. And, of course, everyone's favorite, lavendar!

I am your neighbor in north Hays. We are on watering restrictions here so I haven't done many veggies. I started an asparagus patch last year and with all the rain it really took off. I hope to do a little harvesting this summer.
We did put some veggies in the neighbor's (well watered) garden. Jalepenos and serranos have done well for us. We had more cherry and grape tomatoes than we knew what to do with.
The bell peppers never got big.

How far from Kerrville are you? I might be heading that direction this next Tuesday. Going to Native Plants of Texas to get a Texas Bluebell (if he still has it).

Got any plants to trade? What might you be looking for?

Well..I can say, I have crafted with bones for many years. Must be the Native American in me. When I lived out in the country, and my son's and i would go fishing, I would come to a screeching halt when I saw a clean carcass. When my son's were old enough to drive, and they would see me look back along the road when they were driving..they knew right away to turn around, and 'let mom do what she does'...LOL People who knew what id did would bring me bobcats, armadillo's, cow skulls and most any type of bone. I would use the bobcat skins, ( scraping them and tanning them with salt) I have used deer legs as table legs and gun racks, I made a skeleton for halloween using animal bones. Skulls and Jaw bones I usually painted Native American scenes on them. I would have no problem building a garden trellis or windchimes from bones. I have seen people save the wishbones from turkeys and such, spray paint them gold and tie them to gift boxes for luck. I say, to each their own. My dad used to always tell us when he was young, they used the turkey breast bones for ice skates..LOL ( I never know when to believe what he says..LOL)...and you bet..I would have stopped and picked those bones up ;) Loved your story..LOL

Oh Barbra and TexanJana, I would love to see what the unknown plants look like that you got from Schumachers!!! They have so many unusual plants. I got the native West Texas Velvet Pod Mimosa that I posted about last year there, but didn't see any this time. It is such a great plant I can't imagine why nurseries aren't carrying it. I did pick up the similar looking 'fairy duster bush' the other day. Last year I tried to move the one I had and it died. This is creeping violet mentioned in my first post ... The South African Hosta ... When I told the very nice lady at the check out counter I was going to post about the nursery, she laughingly said, "Tell everyone to bring gloves and pull a few weeds while they are here." When Chip took the nursery back after having sold it a lot of people did go over and help get the place back in shape. The unsung hero of Schumachers, Chip, is not in the greatest of health. He has really struggled to keep the nursery going. Cast a few prayers his way. BTW, they have the yellow yucca that someone mentioned wanting.

Oops, sorry just reread post and you don't even have to change schools - so no problem with leaving friends and making new ones! The school friends will love to come visit. My Ds has a friend in town (not even in same school, but Scouts) and they're always asking *him* over, we can't wait to have a campout at our house but there's one at their house this w/e if it stops raining (Mem Day/bday party for this boy was rescheduled for this w/e b/c of rain - it's been raining for a solid month now)!. If this thread is still going in August I'll be sure to post pics of the "family reunion" (really just my dad's brothers and their kids who live in the area - I don't think those who have moved out of the area are coming back, my siblings are coming end of July). My cousin, her dad (middle brother) and I all have adjoining land, my uncle mows all his with a riding lawnmower (we have hayfields, my cousin just has the old farmhouse, barn and 5 acres). Just my uncles, cousins and spouses, and their kids in the area add up to about about 100 people (25 from one uncle, his kids/spouses and grandkids alone!) so we set up a few tents, 3 grills and sometimes a spit with a pig, a few kiddie pools, a slip-n-slide, and the kids get filthy in the pond/creek/swamp and the slip-N-slide, we hose them off, some go home but some stay around the bonfire til the wee hours - we try to do this every year so the 2nd cousins who live within 10 miles of each other but all go to different schools in different towns can see each other (besides Little League when they play against each other LOL). Oh, and I did manage to get a pic of the buck and doe together (can just see her hind end - no pun intended! - under the tree at the edge of the woods b/t him and the birch).

When I drove across country a few years ago, I was really struck by the varied landscapes of Texas. It's probably the only state besides California where, in a mild/subtropical climate, you can move from very arid areas to very moist ones in a day's drive. (although it would be a long day of driving! San Antonio was my "pit stop" between Big Bend NP and New Orleans) Of course the moistness of SE TX is very different that the moisture of coastal Northern California. But you go from very desert looking areas, through where Centex lives that almost looks like Mediterranean garrigues, to the swampy humid bayou of the LA/TX border...and you really see the effect of average annual precip going up.

Howdy Neighbor,
Just down the road a piece of hwy 32 near Canyon Lake. Thus far I have kept my veggies up in the air on my deck out of dear oh deer harms way.

I'm in the far northwestern edge of Travis county. I haven't had much luck with Kentucky wb either. I've grown them twice and now give up. This year I'm trying the "drying" beans. I ordered a few interesting ones from Seed Savers. I'm not a real experienced vegie gardener but I hope to be some day. Out here is all rock, so I've been building raised beds.

I'm in San Marcos, eastern Hays Co. I've been gone from this forum for a while but am looking around again.

LOVING THE WARM WEATHER... guess it's going away again for a few days. :-(

I just moved from the Bulverde/Spring Branch area. Best of luck with the rock and the @@%$#!&^%&**deer. I did have pretty good luck with tomatoes and thornless black berries.
We will be having a plant swap at MacArthur Park in San Antonio on April 12.

Hey I an in San Saba Co. BUT my sister lived in Blanco for years and my nephew still does! I love it there but will never leave san saba! It's very quiet here.

I'm in NE Medina Co., on the side of a hill. Caliche, rocks, very little soil, raised beds with topsoil work fairly well. I'm into natives and butterfly plants that can survive here. Natives of Texas is one of my favorite nurseries! There is also a native nursery in the town of Medina (between Bandera and Kerrville). It's called Medina Garden Nursery (I believe) located by the river (or creek?). And if you can, check out the Mostly Native Plant Sale in Boerne on April 5th. I wasn't able to keep a Texas Bluebell alive past the first year, but they sure are pretty!

I live in Coryell County and haven't gotten to try many veggies yet. I grow a wierd squash that my husband likes but the deer were getting most of them. Now that I have my house I will grow them here and hopefully do better in the subdivision that at our shop. I had a tomatoe plant appear in my flower bed last year and it pretty well right up til frost.
