New San Antonio Gardening Group

Hi all,

Just thought I would tell all the San Antonians and other local Texans about a new Gardening Group. I know there are quite a few in San Antonio but they can be rather difficult to find.

On meetup.com I just took over a new gardening group for gardeners and plant lovers in San Antonio. This is a great way to meet others with similar interests. There are quite a few members who are new to San Antonio and don't know what to plant here. We are just starting but have some events scheduled. There will be at least 2 meetups a month. Meet ups will vary from being learning experiences on certain topics to fun activities like drawing or container making. When meet up events are appropriate there will be plant raffles!

Good luck with your group. :-) I wish there were something similar in Austin. Three years ago, someone tried to create a garden meet-up group in Austin, but it never got off the ground.

Most Austin gardening clubs are tied to Zilker Botanical Gardens and meet late in the evenings. There isn't anything wrong with this, but I wish there were a group that met on weekends (for those of us who work and are worn out by the time evening rolls around). San Antonio is a bit too far for me or I'd join your group. Sounds like fun!

Sounds great Priscilla. I'm looking forward to hearing more about it when y'all come to the San Antonio Spring Plant Swap on March 21.

Hi Rusty ! Although we aren't really called a club, there is a group of folks from the San Antonio area who get together twice a year for a plant swap. If you're interested, there's also one in Buda coming up on Saturday, April 16 (or 17.... don't have calendar in front of me). patty

I have had wonderful results with indigo spires. As we have had such a mild winter they have been blooming since last May. When I lived in Timberwood park, they were one of the few things the deer did not eat. I seldom watered them. They will get droopy when they need water, otherwise don't water. Mexican bush sage is another that the deer did not eat. Please come join us at the San Antonio Spring Swap on March 21. Let me know if you would like for me to bring you several pots of indigo spires. This pic. of indigo spires was taken about a month ago. Be aware that the bees love them. Yesterday I was sitting in the middle of three very large plants and prunning off the dead blooms. Bees were all around and never bothered me. We went on Sunday and were not impressed. Lots of traffic getting in and out, only to find booths selling cheap knock-offs and junk. I was hoping for antiques or gently used items (the pre-owned selection was worse than garage sales). I thought there might be at least one booth for woodworking and other homemade specialties, but no such luck. There was one booth with plants (mostly houseplants), but nothing of interest to me; another booth had a bunch of pretty glazed pots, but they were very expensive even though they weren't anything special (looked like they "accidentally fell off a truck" like most of the booths' wares). Also, I didn't look it up but I bet selling live baby kangaroos is illegal. Obviously I had invalid expectations!

Re: The white lilies - whether they're crinum americanum or erubescens. I have a similar plant that a woman near Tyler wanted removed from her garden. I sent a query to a bulb group I'm on to see if they could ID them (all I knew is they were stoloniferous and bloomed white, like the photo above). Here is the reply I received: "When you next get a bloom, check to see if the stalk has a reddish cast to it = erubescens. Crinum americanum will grow in ordinary flower beds, but doesn't flower as much as it would have in a moister setting."

Bumping this up! We have meetup Saturday 21st at 2pm at a members home. She has 5 1/2 acres with a pond and 3 greenhouses 1 of then filled with orchids. It will be lots of fun and there are already 13 gardeners who have RSVP'd.

So far this is a great start!

Our group - Blooming Buds, is having a plant swap at the Schultze House (on HemisFair Plaza) March 7th. Only restrictions are no alovera or cactus, agave. We had an over abundance of these from some people and they took home some really great plants. Everyone is invited - we give 1 ticket for a small (3-4") and 2 tickets for a gallon size - more if the plant is larger or rarer. Everyone just brings a bag lunch and we have a ball.
