Tropical Fruits

Shrubby sized fruits

Hi,

could anyone suggest me some tropical fruits that grow as shrubby plants or can be kept at a reasonable size for a greenhouse, either in pots or in the ground.

I am also in search of seeds of Eugenia klotzschiana, E. stipitata, E. neonitida, E. lutescens.

Hi luigi,

You are right about that most of the Eugenias can grow and fruit well in pots. Eugenia klotzschiana is really hard to grow. It's native to cerrado (Brazil) and everyone I have talked to have trouble growing it. E. lutescens is ultra-rare and virtually impossible to find seeds. E. stipitata and E. neonitida seeds you can order from Fruit Lover's Nursery in Hawaii (google it) among other places.

Other Eugenias you may want to look into:
Eugenia aggregata
Eugenia brasilensis
Eugenia luschnathiana

And perhaps you want to try to grow jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora). The red hybrid variety will fruit in just a few years from seed.

I visited Fruit Lover's site: it's great, I'll order some seeds there.
About E. klotzschiana, I've always been curious about it, a little plant with large fruits, and I've read they have a distinctive flavor too.
Here I'm growing Feijoas outdoors, even jf winter temperatures can drop well under freezing, and keep for days. They bear lots of fruits. I'm also growing Psidium cattleyanum and P. lucidum from seeds.

I looked up stachys sylvatica, and while the seeds look the same, I still have not found anything with the unusually shaped foliage. On the plant that I got seeds from, the leaves were not particularly textured at all-- but all the photos I've seen online of various stachys species are quite bumpy/puckered/textured. And the leaves on my (well, not MY, but you know...) are not rounded- they are very arrow shaped. I am surprised, also, at how quickly this thread fell down to the bottom of the page! Thanks for the above suggestions, but I don't think it's quite the same. Any other ideas? Here is a link that might be useful: the seeds look like this one...

I believe it is on the invavise list , so yes it would be illegal to plant... however on my drive to work every morning I see someone who has used them as a hedge row of sorts, they border a small grove of redbuds that this gardener has planted. However unlike other invasives, this one is pretty beneficial to wildlife, as I have personally seen birds use it as a home and eat its red fruit in late fall.

Babs, I have a vague memory of someone who posted color photos of the twigs to compare, but I don't remember where. This has been driving me crazy as I know I saw the same post and I am 95% certain it was at Dave's Trees & Shrubs forum. They no longer offer a forum search and I wasn't able to come up with anything using google. It was a really fabulous photo comparison as I recall and would be interested if you ever find it. I do recall Sedum posting some great photos of her yard where she used a couple of variegated plants to brighten up a darker spot and I am thinking that one was a fabulous variegated Cornus.
