How Big is too big?......

In a fit of impulsive buying I picked up a very large rubbermaid bin on sale, for a second worm bin. It's much wider than deep, which I like. It's about 46" wide, 22" deep and 16" high.

I loved the idea they would have lots of room to get out of any trouble spots, and for harvesting, I can do the side to side instead of dump and sort.

I currently have a smaller (normal-sized) rubbermaid bin which is doing well. These are both indoors.

I'd really like to use this, but I haven't started converting this yet, as I'll return it to the store if I made a grave error.

Even DH got into the excitement. He's fine with the whole worm hobby, as long as he never sees one.

I have used containers much bigger than this, and, with care about moisture levels, have not had problems. Since I wanted to be able to use the containers for other things later, I did not put any drainage holes in the big containers. Instead, I would dig down every few weeks and make sure that I did not have a wet mess at the bottom. If it was too wet at the bottom, I got a pitch fork and brought the bottom material up to the top to dry a bit. I like the bigger containers because it was easier to keep a fairly uniform moisture level, even with the chore of checking the bottom. The worms really liked the large containers as well, and thrived.

Renais, that is music to my ears.
I am planning to not drill any holes in it at all. The handles actually have 8 holes each, and I figured that would be sufficient air.

I don't have drainage holes in my current bin, but did drill holes at the top and lower sides for ventilation.
I don't have access liquid at all.

I'm convinced that they will like the space the new one offers.....how I have to figure out how to get the worms I need to fill it. I'm not in a huge hurry, so I can wait for my lads to multiply unless I come across a deal.

Is it a turkey fig? My comments are about those... You could absolutely use the smaller branches as other cuttings. Heck I'd take more than 1 branch since propagating is not guaranteed with any one piece. If you end up with more than you need, give them away or put them at the curb, somebody will want them. Totally agree with Brandon, the bigger cuttings I've tried for fig, the better and faster they grow. The smallest ones rotted, and no luck with just water. A few days in water until you're ready to pot doesn't seem to harm anything. In addition to removing the figs, remove some leaves if it starts to wilt, more shade. Cuttings can't really utilize much sunshine until they grow some roots. Yes, Ken, figs make medium-size trees here, about 15-20 feet tall, apparently infinitely wide. Tell me what you think of how I shaped my Mom's tree below. You can't tell from the pic, but at the time the pic was taken, I had it where you could duck under and stand up everywhere inside the canopy. The kids like to hide & play in there. Unfortunately it's about twice as big (mostly wider) now, many branches are laying on the ground. After we pick the figs later this month, it's getting another heavy pruning.

From what I've seen (never done it myself), you should be able to root larger cuttings (truncheons) of this plant as easily, or maybe more-so, as smaller cuttings. If there is significant new growth at the tips, you may have to prune back to firmer wood. A moisture tent and rooting hormone should improve your odds.

I made lined drapes with pleating tape a long time ago. It was murder because I bullheadedly didn't set up properly on a table, just used my sewing machine cabinet and let the fabric fall all around it. Since you obviously have more brains than I did then and will buy a table, I'm sure you can do it. They really are not hard to make if you support all the fabric on a table. Mine turned out well. If I were doing it today, I'd move the machine head to my dining room table for a few days. That's what I do nowadays when I make something huge like prom or wedding gowns. Sherry

Yes I would say to cut them down a bit You should try air layering if you want a bigger plant there's a couple nice videos on YouTube where a guy gets a nice 1' plant with branches off an air layer

I had a large (105 gallon) container that I started as a worm bin with just a couple hundred worms from another bin. In the course of a summer, I filled the container wigh kitchen garbage, yard scraps and waste paper. At the end of the summer, the container was teaming with worms. In a good environment the worms mutliply rapidly.

Wow Renais.
Did you build or buy this container? 105 gallons is huge. I see you live in New Mexico. I wonder if a container that large would also be cooler for the worms....just a thought. I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) you had your bin outside, since it was so big.

I can't wait to turn my new larger bin into a worm bin, now. I still want to get more worms for it somehow, though.
