Here is a list of the most fragrant NEWER roses, 1961 and on. Double Delight is a must. Also, Mr. Lincoln. I do not remember where I came across this list on the web. If you Google it, there is a site which, with a click, shows a picture of the rose.

"Gamble Fragrance Award Winners
The James Alexander Gamble Fragrance Medal is awarded to outstanding new, very fragrant roses. The selection is made by the ARS Prizes and Awards Committee for the rose considered the most fragrant in municipal and private gardens throughout the United States over a five-year period. The rose must be registered and must be rated at least 8.0. It is not mandatory that a rose be selected yearly for this medal.
Awards are only to be made when an outstanding new fragrant variety is available. The medal is to be awarded to the hybridizer of the named fragrant new rose at the Fall Annual Meeting of the American Rose Society.

I second the Double Delight I have had mine for 4 years and it smells so good, easy to care for, long bloom time.
You will want to make sure you get repete bloomers not the ones that bloom once and all done for the year.
To bad you don't want climbs, I have one that smells out of this world, I have it up by the entry of the gate. An harbor looks really good with a climber on it for an entry into a rose garden, so you might think about this later down the road and you have to have a sitting spot in the rose garden :)

My Granny grew roses and I sure wished I'd been able to have gotten cutting's of them but they have been gone of some years now :( I always loved her roses.

My favorite (for smell and bloom) antique rose would be Souvenir de la Malmaison. It is available in both bush and climbing forms and is sold by ARE.

I have one called Perfume Delight, Barbra, that blooms and blooms and you can smell it's fragrance long before you get to the rose. As much as I hate to cut flowers, I do bring some of these beauties into my house. The buds on this one are very compact and open to a very full rose.

Your in a warm area, think Bourbons for fragrance and form

I'll give another yes for Souv de la Malmaison. Mine blooms in part shade, the form and fragrance is lovely. My friends is in full sun and blooms even though neglected.

Another rose I got because of its frgrance alone is Lafter. This rose blooms even in the dead of summer. In fact, both of these do.

Then there are the china roses like Ducher and Mutablis They just bloom and bloom and make lovely shrubs.

I do not spray and these were great last year even with all the rain. Lafter did better, however, in drought.

Oh, and there is the lovely Saint Anne whose scent is of cinnamon and Evelyn whose scent is citrus.

Mutablis gets HUGE...... Our grade school has one and it's 8 foot tall and just as wide. Very pretty, single petals.

Now Now ya'll, I don't need more roses, Then maybe I do just one or two more LOL.

You certainly may, Barbara - I will be cutting back come Valentine's day. It is not a climber, but a rather large bush rose. Weldon really liked it.

My favorites are Souvenir de la Malmaison and 'Souvenir de St. Anne's' (it does smell of cinnamon!). They are related and equally lovely. I got them both at ARE, and their fragrance is out of this world.

All of these fill out beautifully in a rose bed; they are upright but bushy in an old rose way, and very fragrant.

I had a rose in Louisisana that was a pretty deep lavender color and smelled so good you could smell it across the yard. I wish I could remember what it was. I would love another one. The house we bought has 2 but they are in too much shade and one stays balled up and the other just doesn't do much. I want to move them and maybe they will do better. I have a few others still in pots I saved from the trash at walmart but I really want some of the ones you don't have to spray so much. I would love to visit ARE sometime.

Belinda's Dream (pink) is a wonderful repeat bloomer with an enticing fragrance. Graham Thomas (yellow)is a big David Austin rose with a delightful smell. Perle d'Or (apricot) has smaller flowers with a good scent. Almost all of the Austin roses are scented. Give yourself and your husband a delightful outing--go to the Antique Rose Emporium, tell them what your soil and exposure is like, and have them suggest roses to select from. They have never steered me wrong!

I'd stay away from the hybrid teas;
I always think they're like Thoroughbred horses, ideally suited to what they're supposed to do (run like the wind or provide cut flowers), but temperamental, high-maintenance, & fragile.

Thoroughbreds don't make good cart ponies or jumpers, & they can't pull the Budweiser wagon, & HTs aren't the best garden plants, at least in our area.

Stick with the teas, Chinas, English (David Austin), Earthkind, & Bourbons, & you've got yourself some Texas-tough garden roses.

When you say full, do you mean lots of petals or a bushy plant?
I like my roses to have lots of leaves and lots of branches and lots of flowers. I like them to look like shrubs, only shrubs that bloom for 9 months out of the year and with blooms that smell wonderful.
There are lots and lots of different varieties of roses at my house and the best ones are teas. Antique Rose Emporium will have a large selection of teas and I can tell you that they are all pretty much perfect except for Rubens and Perle des Jardins. Put those 2 teas on the NO list. Their china roses are great but very few are fragrant. They actually bloom a little more (for me) than teas, and that is saying a lot, since the teas are constant bloom. I'd stay away from HTs and floribundas. When my rose gardens were first built I had half HTs and floribundas and half teas, chinas, and David Austins. Most of the HTs and floribundas have died because they are way too particular about things. None of the others have died. The Austins are my absolute favorites but they will require spraying from time to time. I find that if I spray them 4 times a year they do really well.

I've been thinking (imagine that ;-) and after having grown hundreds of rose varieties, if I were starting all over in a new garden these are the roses I would pick. From Chamblee Roses (in order of preference)

Buck Roses

l. Prairie Sunrise (very double, very fragrant, very healthy)
2. Prairie Harvest (very double, very healthy, mild fragrance)
3. Golden Unicorn (beautiful changeable color, very healthy, semi-double)

David Austin roses:

1. Jude the Obscure (very double, very fragrant, healthy foliage)
2. Heritage (ditto above)
3. Pat Austin (ditto again)

And with all your getting GET Pink Gruss an Aachen (very double, very healthy, gorgeous bloom and bush form, in bloom all the time, but not real fragrant. Nonetheless, if I could have only one rose it would be this one.)

From Antique Rose Emporium:

1. Belinda's Dream (everybody agrees it's a great rose)
2. Souvenir de la Malmaison (very double, very fragrant)
3. Mrs. Dudley Cross (very double, healthy, thornless)
4. Thomas Affleck (double, healthy, thornless)

#1, 2, and 3 are also available to Chamblees I think, but Thomas Affleck is an ARE introduction and since you want to go there anyway ...

All of these roses bloom a lot and will do well in a no spray garden. They might get a little black spot and mildew from time to time, but will outgrow it. Remember to give them as much sun as you can, lots of water and lots of fertilizer.

There are many, many more wonderful roses, but for myself, and your expressed desires, these would be my first picks. There is a nice range of colors among them. You've gotten some other good suggestions, and I hope this helps also.

I have been racking my brain and I think the one I had was called Blue Moon. When I looked it up it is a hybrid tea. If you find a source for it let me know please. I know they are a pain but that one was worth it.

It seems many of the fragrant mauves are very susceptable to blackspot, but they are very pretty and very fragrant. There might be some newer ones that are more disease resistant that the folks on the Rose Forum could name for you. Roses were my passion for quite a few years, but I haven't kept up with the new introductions.

I have just gotten my first ones a few months ago since I moved to Texas. I had several when I lived in Lousiana but its been about 7 years since I grew them. Thank you so much. I couldn't believe I remembered the name. My daughter was just a little girl when I had that one and she asked me a while back why I didn't grow that good smelling purple one anymore. I couldn't believe she remembered that she was only about 3 or 4 years old then but she did always go out with me to tend to them and liked to bring that one in the house to smell the blooms. It was a very different fragrance than other roses. Kind of hard to describe. Not sweet or citrus more like spices or something. It smelled like perfume she said. Her birthday was yesterday and I told her I would get another one if I could find it. I will ask on the rose forum. I am way out my league over there but they sure do know a lot.

I got one called Blue Girl. Its a cross from Blue Moon now I'm looking for one called Moon Magic. It wasn't in stock anywhere. I remembered Blue Moon was one I got when I first move here and it died in about a week. That was why it was stuck in my head I guess. After calling my friend that owns the nursery in Louisiana and asking her what they used to carry it was Moon Magic thus the different smell. It was like some sort of perfume with spices. Sorry to derail your thread Barbra. I looked at a million roses it seems like today. I hope some of the ones they offered interest you.

You said you did not want hybrid teas--be aware that most of the suggestions you have received have actually been Hybrid Tea, so you'll have to look them all up.

Ones that I know are NOT HTs that have been recommended above are: the Buck, Austin, and ARE roses listed by roselee, Graham Thomas, Perle d'Or,Jude the obscure, Pat Austin, and Souvenir de la Malmaison. I think all the others people have recommended are HTs.

Fragrant shrub roses with full blossoms that I recommend are:
-Belinda's Dream (pink, large shrub-modern)
-Maggie (dark pink, med-large shrub-Bourbon class)
-Perle d'Or (apricot small-medium shrub-Polyantha class)
-Souvenir de la Malmaison (white/light pink large shrub-Bourbon class)
(if it is very wet where you live, Souvenir de la Malmaison's blooms will ball up and look ugly, so choose Souvenir de St. Anne instead--not as many petals, but still almost full, and it will have the same fragrance--and SdlM's fragrance is considered one of the best!)
-Kronprincess Viktoria (white small-med shrub--Bourbon class)
-Mrs. R. B. Cant (dk pink large shrub--tea class--it's old, not a HT)
-Mrs. Dudley Cross (yellow and pink med-large shrub--tea class--not HT!)

I've been really sick, so I haven't been out in two weeks. Have you been here in Rockport recently?

Are you talking about a rose garden in SA or Rockport? If Rockport stay away from the Bourbons. They don't do well here. I tried and tried to grow them, and I talked to one of the guys from the ARE, and he said that Bourbons don't do well in south Texas on the coast.

I guess my favorite rose has to be my Mutabilis even though it doesn't smell, it blooms year round and is so pretty, and it is an Earthkind rose. I also really like my Climbing Pinkie another Earthkind rose, Duchesse de Brabant another Earthkind, and Mrs. Dudley Cross being considered for Earthkind. I have an Intrigue which smells heavenly, but is a hybrid and is prone to black spot. A friend of mine that lives on Aransas Bay is growing the most beautiful, fragrant rose called a Honey Perfume. You just can't imagine how good it smells.

I like the antiques much better than the hybrids which tend to be more disease prone. You might want to check out the
Antiue Rose Emporium where you can check out roses for scent.

Also consider using Earthkind Roses, and here is some information on Earthkind Roses and more information on some roses that are being considered for Earthkind.

Linda I am so sorry to hear that you have been sick. We were down this weekend, just to support the Lamar Fire Dept. Mardi Gras party. They had the best band that played music from the 50's and 60's, It was so much fun to watch older couples twist and do all the old dances. It seemed everyone was dancing, I think Gary and I were the youngest couple dancing. That band was one of the best bands I have ever heard. I did plant 60 of the aztec grass plants around my new brugmansia bed, and also planted some brugmansia plants, Daydream, New Orleans Lady, Adelina, and Mon Amoure de Maruel Brugmansia. I am going for the double pinks.
