Class - How to kill a tote 101.......

Take two 10 gallon totes, fill about 1/3 with shredded paper and cardboard. Add 1/2 gallon of compost. Add 120 adult red (in each). Feed each week for about a month, or until the bin seems to be begining to thrive. Store in large tin shed with 3 other totes (more than half full, running for 2-3 months very happy bins)

Go away for a New Years eve party and stay overnight (drinking, swimming, BBQ-ing and generally being oblivious to the needs of you army back at home).

The temperature of the day (and into the night) was 42 C (or about 108 F)

Simple recipe, dire consequences (for the two newer bins). 100% csualty rate.

Lessons learned:

1. Always when starting a bin, maintain a larger mass of bedding (the 3 other bins were fine, as the army could find comfort in their well stocked barrack(s))

2. I just started pre-sesoning 5 other totes along similar lines to the two coffins. I have now combined these into 2 totes (now almost full of damp bedding and a little compost) waiting for worms.

3. When experimenting and playing God, do it on a small scale to minimise your losses if a catastrophe occurs. (losses were only 200 or so soldiers).

4. Don't disrespect the Mother (nature). She can be one moody, nasty piece of work.

5. Lots of beer and switching to scotch after midnight is not a fun thing to do.

'narf said. Happy New Year.
