Bought a new house and need landscaping advice

Hi all, we purchased this 1930s house back in the fall, and have been renovating it to bring it back to life (it still has a ways to go!). In mid-March, we would like to tackle the front yard. We ripped out everything in front but one crape myrtle and I have a few questions:

(1) Can we use round-up to create our beds? Seems like I read somewhere that it doesn't stick around in the soil to hurt the plants. Does it work with St Augustine?

(2) The house faces north, and so all winter much or the yard has been shaded. However, in the summer it will be hit by the sun. I was thinking about Encore Azaleas along the front of the house with a low boxwood hedger in front of it. Will the Encores work? They are too expensive to take chances!

OK, more questions later, including how to hide that ridiculous a/c unit (I'm thinking podocarpus).
