Blossom End Rot (BER) and containerized tomatoes
Comments (4)Yes, I think continuing with the 12-4-8 is the problem - I have a heavy hand with fertilizer, I suspect, and wish I had stopped it earlier. It's possible that over-watering is an issue in the SWC but that would be tough to control. It's not high humidity or soil temp (up until this past week it's been fairly cool) or soil compaction (brand new Al's mix modified for SWC wicking). My casual reading flagged overly acidic soil as a possible cause (perhaps the plant cannot absort nutrients?). What do you think - more dolomitic lime? There's another thread on this that recommends a Ca-specific fertilizer as a solution. Any thoughts on this? Maybe just a couple of eggshells in the container for the organic route? What is your 20-20-20 fertilizer and does it provide micronutrients? The MG tomato-specific formulation does, although I don't recall if Ca is one of them. Knowing that I'm going to give you two suggestions, but since you said nothing about any other symptoms such as leaf lesions, lesions on stems, these are just suggestions, and maybe you can share with us if there are any other symptoms we should know about. First is Buckeye Rot, linked to at the very bottom and if you read some of the links you'll also see pictures other than those shown with this Google link. The second suggestion is Late Blight ( P. infestans), and I don't if it's present in KS. http://www.longislandhort.cornell.edu/vegpath/photos/lateblight_tomato.htm The link above is one of the best I know for Late Blight. But the fungal disease Grey Mold can also mimic LB, so you might was to take a look at that as well since Grey Mold is present almost everywhere if the weather conditions are right. And it really would help if there are other symptoms we should know about. Carolyn Here is a link that might be useful: Buckeye Rot...See Moretomato blossom end rot Qu
Comments (4)Romas and paste types in general seem to suffer from blossom end rot (BER) more than other varieties. I don't know why. It's thought to be due to lack of calcium in the fruit. This is not related to how much calcium you have in your soil, except if you had none whatsoever but that's not the case. It seems to be related to the plant's inability to to get calcium into the developing fruit. Stress seems to be the major factor and irregular watering is often the main culprit. But not always! It's quite common to have just one plant in an entire patch that suffers from BER. I wouldn't worry about it. It happens to almost everyone. This year we have BER in one plant in a big patch. It's a roma type. I've found that heavy mulching reduces the incidence of BER, but it doesn't eradicate it....See MoreBlossom end rot on un-ripe stupice tomato
Comments (1)There are various theories why BER occurs, lack of calcium being the primary factor (often combined with excessive N). But inconsistent watering practices seem to play an equal role. BER often occurs when damper early season weather begins to dry out just as the fruit is beginning to set but can be just as frequent when the plants are allowed to dry too much in between waterings. I am not a big proponent of self watering containers and I am not familiar with your Garden Patch grow boxes to comment but I would do what I could to ensure the plants in them receive consistent, even moisture. Bonide makes a calcium supplement for tomatoes called 'Rot-Stop' that is watered into the soil. I've never had to use it myself but it seems to be quite effective and is a popular item at my nursery....See Moreangie83
