Buying mango trees: 3 gal or 7 gal pots?
Comments (37)Yes Puglvr, I understand anyone who shy's away from a Kent mango tree,..I expect mine to top out around 40 + feet when it is fully grown,..maybe 20 yrs from now. But speaking of huge mango trees, the Valencia Pride will be even TALLER than the Kent. A very fast grower, one of the reasons it does so well in places with fairly cold winters ( like here ). Grows so fast it adds a layer of outer bark faster than most trees, helping it survive those few 33 - 36 deg nights, just needs the initial 3 or so winters to be moderate. Don't even want to talk about the very rare 30 deg ones !!! lol But thats why I have my C 9 Christmas tree lights strung thru all the trees till March 1st. An ounce of prevention.......See Morejust bought 6 mango
Comments (30)Dear Babyg, Sorry I wasnâÂÂt checking the forum latterly. Puglvr gave good advices and she has much more experience in mango than me. Your location sounds much better than mine. IâÂÂm in Burbank 91501 and I think itâÂÂs little colder than yours in the winter. Believe me I have been experimenting with growing mangoes every year for the last 10 years, and I think I have learned greatly in the last couple years of how to keep the little young trees survive in the winters. Do not let fruits on young trees at least the first 2 years. In cold wet winter, cover from top to toe when itâÂÂs below 50F every night with plastic bags. Cover the soil around the root when rain. Root rot is the #1 killer. I vote for Maha too. ItâÂÂs has little disease and itâÂÂs strong. I like the taste of Valencia Pride, but these are the only two fruits that I had tasted. Last year I lost the Alphosol. This winter so far so good with 10 mangoes on ground: Mun Kun Si (leaves all damaged by the New Year freezing); Nam Doc Mai; 6 ft Kent seedling; Neelum; HD Manila (most leaves damaged by freezing). In flowering: Alampur Baneshan; Cac Hoa-Loc; Edward; Lancetilla; Mahachinook. All of the trees were protected by the same method. IâÂÂm surprised that the HD Manila was damaged by the cold, and Manila was listed as one of the cold hardy variety. Sapote...See MoreJust ordered my mango trees!
Comments (101)Thanks Sapote and mangodog. I will be interested to hear if you have success delaying your fruiting season on flowers you cut. Hopefully they don't just mature faster to get back on schedule. Are you intending to cut entire trees or just a portion of the flowers to see if you can extend an individual tree's fruiting?...See MorePalm Springs MangoDog Yard update July 2011
Comments (15)@mangodog thanks for the information, multi grafting is something I want to try eventually, i guess choosing the right early , mid and late season varieties that have the same growth , Id agree with tropicalgrower the valencia pride is like the godzilla of mango trees, the one i planted at my mothers house, is about 40-45 ft tall, and only about 10 years old. its easily visible on google earth lol but who knows how these cultivars will react sharing the same root stock....See Morej-grow
