1st time growing Black Cherry etc advice please

I had planned to plant this in a pot and hang it from the the heaviest, longest "arm" I could find, screwed to my garage wall, then letting vines hang down and prune to a few branches. Would mulch and put a can with holes punched in it and a water bottle fitted to it with top cut out for ease of watering.

However, I read that they have very long vines. Are they heavy? Will this work? Will I need to cut the vines short?

I have a small urban area with little space and am trying to fit in some other heirlooms I've never tried. I am also hoping to grow Caspian Pink by tying it with strips of old panty hose to fishing line tied to the heaviest, longest "arm" I could find screwed to my garage wall. Again, advice would be appreciated it.

Since tomato plants are said to be poisonous and I have three wire-haired dachshunds, I am putting one of the plastic collars used for winterizing roses around Caspian Pink. I guess if Black Cherry gets low enough I'll have to cut the vines back just so the dogs can't reach it. Problems, problems.

My first-time Cherokee Purple will be in 5 gal. bucket with holes in it places in a big plastic pot with the tallest wire cage I can find and near a fence so it can be tied to the fence. I can put the plastic collar around this also.

Just for fun I am going to try upside down with Sweet Baby Girl in a green plastic shopping bag, inserted in the side, not the bottom, using cut off top of pop bottle. I have threaded fiashing wire through the shopping bag up to the handles, will put some herbs or flowers, probably parsley in top in holes through newspaper put on top. I read that the original had foam on the bottom so have foam from laptop box I can put in bottom. I will have to tie the handles together and tie it to the tallest shepherd's crook I can find, heavy brick at the bottom and tied to nearby fence. It will also have the can with holes punched in it and a water bottle fitted to it with top cut out for ease of watering sticking out of the top.

Caspian Pink and Cherokee Purple will also get a can with holes punched in it and a water bottle fitted to it with top cut out for ease of watering.

the dogs would need to eat a LOT before getting poisoned. They'd like stop, and starting yacking up, way before that point.

The plant will get big and heavy. For its best production it needs a large container for good root growth. That container with wet soil will be heavy let alone the plant. One would need some good anchor screws.

If it is hot and windy you will need to water it everyday.

From my experience black cherry grows huge, so be prepared for that. It can get heavy too. Caspian pink is also somewhat tall but not as thick-growing as black cherry.

Here's what I've done w/great success. I am a florist & any florist knows what a "procona" is. It is a fairly large plastic container in either black, white or pink in which you receive wet cut flowers. I brought several black ones home & drilled 6-8 holes in the bottom of each. I filled w/approp soil & planted one tomato plant per bucket/procona. I also place bricks under them so they get approp ventitlation. They have flourished year after year! Mine are in full sun & I don't have to deal w/weeding. My suggestion is that any of you who want to plant veg in containers go to your local florist & ask if they have any they want to get rid of & I'm sure they will. Ask for "the black buckets in which you receive your wet cut flowers." Our shop cannot keep up w/giving them away! They are also good for storage but for planting veggies, the black are great! At least they have been for me. I have also planted many annuals in them which will overflow & cover the container.

Hi, everyone! great news is that the Rosarian couple were very nice. I actually tried calling them last night but couldn't get through because they had their fax machine on. Then tonight they explained that they couldn't return my call because the number I had left them had been cut off by their answering machine. They too have not grown tree roses because like Karl had feared, rose trees do terrible in Kansas. Stupid me should also have thought far ahead about our tornado problems as well. I didn't think about this issue before the terrible winds this past weekend. Flower2sew, in Overland Park we got hit real bad. There is still debris from knocked over light poles on Hwy 69 from people crashing from the ice... But the snow lasted just one terrible day, it was very thick snow,and we were blasted with both ice and snow at once and in some parts of Overland Park, the cable lines and phone lines were down ...then argh, it shot up to near 60 degree warmth right the following day, then dropped down again the following evening. The rosarian couple agreed that they would never leave out the tree roses at this point because of last weekend's extreme swing of temperature (including this week) but they too felt I really needed to speak to a Master Rosarian, so they gave me the emergency helpline for the Rose Society. The nice rosarian couple I spoke to explained that they themselves have never grown tree roses because of how erratic Kansas weather can be in the spring and they said that the people they know who had rose trees all had either greenhouses or would go to a nursery and "rent" out a space for the winter. In other words they wouldn't know how to advise me on how to keep my roses indoors in my particular situation. They did feel that since my rose trees still have buds sprouting, that keeping them in a completely dark, cold, poorly insulated garage at this point is a question that only a master rosarian could answer. It is a tough call because no sane person/gardener would ever be in the crazy predicament that I am in now... I am doing crazy stuff like lightly spraying my roses with warm water in the morning and when I come home, then again before going to bed to keep them as close to a greenhouse effect and reducing my house temperature from 68 degrees to 65 so that I don't shock the roses when I bring them outside to 58 degree sunshine (but that makes me super cold indoors and I end up having to wear a few layers of clothing in the house and shivering under the covers when I try to sleep LOL). So hopefully I can reach the helpline before I get "outta control" and do more crazy outta control guesswork. Anyway, thank you EVERY One and All for your help and ongoing support! Hugs to each of you... P.S. forgot to say that to me the membership dues for the American Rose Society is very reasonable, and wouldnt have hesitated for a second had I not been so broke from all the training with Eluane and house payments but in due time if I can just make the baby steps and get both trees to survive.

Well the room is morphing into something else. Son likes this cheap "O" jazz mirrored mural, its sorta cool and cheesy at the same time. The furniture was looking a little too mature so I think the mural adds some 20yr old youth and it ties in the black and light gray carpet to the room. It will be spaced and placed behind the sofa and take up a big area. He has a long narrow room that's now limited on space due to the big a$$ chair, difficult having any symmetry so thinking of two matching small bench/stool/ottoman type seating across from chair. I did a layout to scale and sm bench/stools are the only way to get extra seating without blocking the TV viewing. Of course I am now hung up on seating again. I found a sight online called m!dnight velvet; don't know anything about them except they have some low cost slightly unusual stuff. Son doesn't have much room for more side tables (see large coffee table in above post) so we are thinking of the sm head or the tufted ceramic stool/tables below to use as a table and possibly doubling as extra seating (but not sure). The rooms accent colors will need to change as well but we are waiting for the mirror mural for inspiration. Right now we are thinking a purple/blue accent but that could change. Also think we need texture but not sure how to add that unless it's just in some pillows or I come up with another idea for stools/tables/bench. We also decided against black curtains in the living area, might be too much black with the black carpet and black in mirror mural so we bought these pale gold ones from sm@rtbargins. The window is across the room from the big a$$ chair so I was thinking it would look better to have a similar color on the window to balance it out a bit. I'm trying to buy all the furniture from craigslist to stay in my $1,200 budget (not including accessories) but still need a 48" round used dining set. I'm so sick sick sick of looking on CL but have too to keep the cost down. If I see one more ad that says "designer" I'm going to flip a lid! Of course it's designer, someone designed it!!! And don't get me started on "custom" ads. P.S, I'm sorry about these pictures but I'm having trouble with my cable or photobucket and also my overloaded brain so please forgive as I will figure it out later. I understand this. Certain crops do well with direct sowing but I've had contrary to the norm experiences to date. Carrots and onions and beets---eh, not as great as I hoped despite over seeding. Radishes all sprouted though using same method. Same with zuch, watermelon and winter squash---the seedlings I have had to pull that I hate because they weren't cheap and frankly, I'd love lots of all three---and both marigolds and nasturtiums too. My comment context is on several fronts. I did all transplants last year from mail order and a nursery. It was not cost effective but only one seedling of 15-20 didn't make it. This year was all direct sowing in contrast minus the yarrow left from last year. So yes, seed is cheap overall but I have empty space where I over seeded and not enough space where I counted each individual seed---100% germination with those seeds to be exact so I moved what I could to empty pots with crap soil to see how they do. It was a simple observation that others might find useful/intriguing because there is no right or wrong way to garden and why not share? But thanks for the information.

Uh oh...I seem to have made a mistake then putting 1 Black Cherry plant a piece in some very large hanging baskets. Any ideas on how to remedy this now? They have been in them for a bit over 2 weeks & definitely have already rooted into their new homes. If they grow really long, i'd hate to have a messy bunch of strings & stakes trying to hold them up. I can take a few pics of them later if that would help. LMK.

Don't worry about poisoning the dogs. I've got a dachshund (of the long haired variety) and she's never taken in interest in my plants. Tomato leaves don't taste very good or smell good to them so it would be unlikely that they'd even try any.

Black Cherry does get big and I'd hate to try to hang it. If you have room to put it in the ground somewhere I'd recommend that.

I agree about your dog not eating the tomatoes. My dog goes for my lettuce, carrots, and raspberries, but never touches my tomato plants even though I have more of those than anything. Also want to second that Black Cherry can get huge! Keep in mind that, since you are going to be watering a lot, you are likely to wash out a lot of nutrients, so be sure to keep the fertilizer coming, but not so much that you get lots of plant and no tomatoes!

So glad I posted here before doing anything! I'll shift Black Cherry into the ground. Should Caspian Pink go into the hanging basket or into the 5-gal. container I had planned to put Cherokee Purple into? Maybe Cherokee P. should be the one to go into the hanging basket. Too bad I don't have more ground space.

Well, I just got my plants from E & R, an Amish company in Indiana.I wasn't able to insert a picture but have posted a link to a picture of them. See how much smaller the Black Cherry plant is on the far left? Next to it is Cherokee Black, which is taller. Then you will see a Caspian Pink out of its 3-pack and a Sweet Little Girl (already with bloom) out of its 3-pack.

Surely they didn't send the wrong, mislabeled plant. Does it start out so small and then make up for it big time?

I thought these were a good deal. No minimum purchase. The two 3-packs were $1.99 each and the individual plants were $2.25 each. It was the shipping that was killing: $8.35, for a grand total of $21.33 for 6 plants (I also got two ground cherry plants.) But $3.56 a plant isn't bad.

Cherry tomatoes grow quite fast. I always plant the cherries last when starting seeds indoors since they will catch up, and even pass, the ones started earlier.

Heh, wish I had seen all this Black Cherry information before I had planned out my garden. I just figured it was like any other cherry and hadn't seen any comment on size. I'm growing mine in a 7 gallon container. We'll see how it works out.

I'm growing all my cherries in contaiers this year and leaving the garden for the larger OP types.

Black Cherry gets huge, we're talking 10-15ft vines in all directions you'll allow. Wonderful plant.
