I'm new...please be gentle :)

Last summer was my first attempt at inground veggies. Well, the chucks 'n munks (wood & chip) went to town and my yield was pretty dismal. I have a small space (10' x 10') available for veggies an thought I might be more succesfull trying containers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I did this year:

(12) 5-gal buckets hanging from shepherds hooks and secured to pool fence. Plants include 3 buckets/2 plants per Jalapeno peppers, 2 buckets/2 plants per eightball zucchini, 2 buckets/2 plants per picklebush cukes, 2 buckets snow peas, 1 bucket/2 plants yellow bell pepper, 2 buckets/2 plants green zucchini.

2 half barrels w/ red, white & blue potatoes

1 half barrel thumbelina and short 'n sweet carrots

1 half barrel leeks

Several 5g buckets raised off the ground with hot cherry peppers, more eightball zukes, cukes, onions.

I halve also planted 5 tomato and 3 green bell pepper plants in the ground, as the critters didn't seem to bother them too much last year. I know it seem like an awful lot of plants but after such a disappointing start last year, I'll be happy if half of them make it. Thoughts? Advice?
