Austin Seniors residence help, please

My mom will be moving to Austin from Houston at the first of the year. She is looking for a residence that caters to Seniors Â not really assisted living, but a place designed for active Seniors.

Ideal area would be somewhere near 290 and I-35, or as close to there as possible. Naturally, security is of major importance. She will consider purchase or rental.

Kerri, Mom can be, shall we say, "compulsive" at times. She visited Sun City a couple of years ago, and she was so impressed that she bought a house on the spot. As soon as she drove away, she realized she had made a mistake, so she wormed her way out of the contract. The main drawback was that her ex son-in-law lived there, and she knew my sister would be upset for a number of reasons.

The problem with Sun City now is more the distance from my nephew. We want her to curtail her driving as much as possible, and that drive into Austin would be too much for her. Shoot, even I hate that drive. I-35 can be a nightmare, and this coming from a guy who lived in Houston until a year ago.

Jjpeace: that is your opinion, but it would be a sad day indeed if the only roses available to the rest of North America are determined by what is popular in Toronto! Kim: There will be demand for these obscure varieties again, everything is cyclical. The key is to have them propagated, distributed, and safely tucked away in many gardens instead of letting them disappear forever during the dark ages -- just like the ancient libraries of Alexandria or Timbuktu. A long time ago I was assistant to the curator at UC Berkeley Botanical Garden while doing my undergrad. The person in charge of the California section was kind enough to give me a rooted sucker of minutifolia because I was doing a research project. Afterwards, I kept the plant alive for ten years in a #1 pot in San Francisco, but lost it during an extended trip because my plant sitter didn't water it. Minutifolia was dormant at the time. I'm glad it's being more widely distributed, because through the years, the friends of the garden that run the plant sales rarely propagated it. I have plenty of experience keeping this ENDANGERED species alive, it prefers dappled shade in hot situations and produces bigger leaves & flowers with regular water. If the placement is correct, the plant explodes with growth. The growing media in the pot is fast draining, but it has no qualms sending roots through the holes into clay soil. Except for water, I basically just ignore it, no pruning, fertilizer, or spray. I'm glad you generously donated Pure Bea to the heritage group, I will treasure it. I had already contacted Tessie last year about PB. I asked her about hips but she didn't get any viable seedlings.... My 10+ year old Suncrest on its fourth flush this season:

I replied in an earlier thread, but after hearing all your replies I was able to relate because not only did I experience firsthand your problems, but also caregivers constantly visited my senior center office looking for advice and services. So here we go: 1. The most difficult time in your life is the transition from being a child to becoming the parent. It's very difficult and heartbreaking. 2. As people get older they become less interested in activities they once enjoyed because they're just plain tired. As memory fades, they'll talk about the past. Don't fight it. My brother had Alzheimer's, and every time we visited he told us he had just come back from cutting firewood in the woods. Rather than correct him, we continued his conversation about this and he was quite pleased. Get a recorder, as mentioned above, and get as much family history as you can while the person still recalls more vividly past events. Be more accepting of their declining limits. If they just want to sit there and watch TV, let them. Try some simple chair exercises. One that helps keep legs strong is quite simple. Just sit in a chair and lift each leg. This builds the upper front thigh muscle and is one of the first exercises they have you do in physical therapy after a lengthy bedridden stay in a hospital. Also, most senior centers office similar programs just to keep people moving. Be nice to yourself. Take a break. Hire an older person who could more easily relate and also "babysit" for you so you can go out and have a few hours to yourself. If you don't, you will come to resent your caregiving. Also, there are people who would be willing to stay overnight to give you an entire weekend of freedom. Do it! And lastly, don't feel guilty if you're nice to yourself or occasionally lose patience. You're only human. Consider a day or two per week in an Adult Day Care program. Simply being among their peers can do wonders. I've seem an amazing difference in seniors who have participated in this. However, you may have to bring the person screaming and hollering at first, but very quickly they will begin to enjoy themselves. My last suggestion comes from a study I read years ago. Nursing home residents were asked what they would like to do. While activities directors thought they wanted loads of activities, when asked, the residents replied they really wanted to get out of the home for a few hours and take a short ride. We once had a program at our senior center where a local restaurant that offered a soup and sandwich type of lunch donated a number of gift certificates. We would choose an elder along with a volunteer, and they would go out to lunch. Most people really enjoyed this. However, you must keep the outing to no more than a few hours due to fatigue. Hope some of this helps, for I've been there, done that; and I have a special spot in my heart for the caregivers who look after others. It isn't easy.

This is getting to be my mantra, but, has your mother seen her doctor lately? Urinary tract infections can really knock the elderly on their pins - erratic behavior, mood swings, hallucinations, drops in blood pressure (resulting in fainting or falls), dehydration, death. And a short course of antibiotics takes care of it. That was the first course we took with my mother after my dad passed away in 2001 - any test we and her doctor could think of ruling out a brain tumor or anything organic - but we really knew she was taking her first steps along the journey of Alzheimer's type dementia. I was her primary caregiver until she went into a nursing home six months ago. My folks both had wills and revocable living trusts; took great pains to have all their additional documents - living wills, DNR's, etc. in order so the only thing I had to do with mom was get my name added to her checking account and have my brother's and my names put on the safety deposit box. A conservatorship is something to consider if and when your mother can no longer handle her own affairs. That always seems draconian to me, but a necessary step when someone is intractable and totally unaware or unwilling to admit there's a problem. It's too easy to say go see a lawyer specializing in Elder Law because you can't force your mother into making arrangements she has no interest in making. But it seems that, instinctively, you know something is going to have to be done although it's extremely difficult to know exactly what that "something" is until a critical event occurs - like being forcibly removed from a place of business, a total breakdown, having to be hospitalized for a mental evaluation, etc. It would be ideal if you could catch your mother in an agreeable mode, try and discuss some of your concerns. Failing that, the next best step would be to get your siblings, daughter, your mother's sisters and anyone in the family who would even be remotely concerned with your mother's welfare on the same page. If one person is designated as "in charge" (usually because most people are relieved to let someone else take charge), make sure everyone agrees that whatever is done is the right thing. The hardest thing right now is that you're pretty much stuck between thinking about getting ducks lined up for when they're needed, wanting to help and do what's appropriate for your mother with her blessing and being backed into a corner if the situation gets out of control. It's when you're backed into a corner you might get a result no one anticipated - like your mother being placed in a less than ideal, space available facility.

Would a shared housing situation be worthwhile for a number of people who are finding living alone a bit too much? I think that there are several advantages. There is more intellectual and emotional stimulation/satisfaction that living alone. There'd be fewer chores when four or five or so share them ... and if two can agree on how one should be done, sharing a job is more fun than doing it alone. A number of seniors say that looking after this place is getting just too onerous. Three wouldn't be a good idea: two would become better friends, and one would be the odd guy out. They'd eat better: if it were your turn to get/share in getting lunch, tea and toast just wouldn't cut it, though for many, living alone, they'll settle for such ... (rather frequently?). People who live with you can notice if there are minor changes in your habits or operation, which may give an indication of upcoming difficulties. The inhabitants could check on one another's keeping up with their medications and other health-related issues. There'd be a major saving in housing costs, living in one (usually larger) place than individuals would require. Following someone's release from hospital care, though an individual living alone could well have no one to act as caregiver during their recovery at home, the others in this shared home could pick up the slack while the recovering one wasn't fully capable. And they'd not be a "bed blocker" in the hospital. If the one who had the health problems were not able to take over their share of the responsibilities after a time, the original arrangement would have been that they would need to make other living arrangements. But they'd have developed major savings over having moved into a caregiving facility originally. And quite likely had a preferable living situation in the interim. As the senior component of our society increases, and fewer workers have pensions, it seems to me that arrangements such as this will be helpful in future years. Some say that, while one of those old large, two-storey houses would be a good candidate, that the stairs are a major deterrent for many. I wonder whether, using some of the savings enjoyed from delaying the costly entry into a retirement home, they could build an elevator. Or one of those stair-rail chairs might be adequate ... or even as a temporary solution pending the building of an elevator. ole joyful ... who won't be around, over the longer term, to find out

I asked because I thought you must have a reason for not wanting it, as it was the obvious answer. LOL

Is your mom seeking a senior environment, or just an environment conducive to that lifestyle? If the latter, then what about those condos at 45th and Lamar (used to be called the Triangle)? Nice shops, parks, etc. within walking distance or short drive and the convenience of downtown and its amenities. Probably pricey though.

Pete, are you in Bastrop itself or the county? Bastrop has the subdivision Tahitian Village and I understand TV was originally designed to be a 1970's Sun City equivalent. ;) The drive into Austin is a bit long, but not hard (yet).

What Mom is looking for is what most places call "Independent Living", meaning the residents can live without the need of any assistance (medical or physical), but a facility that offers assistance should it be needed in the future. She would also prefer that all, or at least one meal a day would be furnished, or made available cafeteria style. The one will Mom has lost is that of cooking.

I have come across a couple of places that seem to fit the bill. Primrose at Shadow Creek and Heritage Point are both an the area near my nephew, south of 290 and east of I-35. She will call both places tomorrow.

I do not live in the city limits of Bastrop. I am 6.5 miles south of the Home Depot at 304 and 71. I have 8 acres right on Cedar Creek. I looked at a number of houses in Tahitian, and my favorite golf course, Pine Forest, is there along the Colorado. Mom liked the area, but it was too far away for her druthers. I prefer the privacy of my place as opposed to Tahitian.

The old First National Bank building in downtown Bastrop is now the VisitorÂs Center. There are two ladies who work there who know all there is to know about Bastrop, especially the gossip and the "less well-known" history of the area.

They told me a while back that the area of Tahitian Village was originally owned by bankers and other well-to-do types who bought the area, built a number of discretely secluded houses and furnished them with mistresses. I donÂt know if that is true or not, but I have no reason to doubt those ladies.

As to being another Sun City, nothing could be farther from the truth. Fact is, in spite of the great number of retirees in the Bastrop area, there are no residences that cater to Independent Living Seniors. There are a few retirement homes, but only for those needing physical or monetary assistance.

One of these days, someone is gonna wise up and build a retirement village or highrise in Bastrop. At least I hope so, because one of these days I will probably be looking for one!

Below are a couple of websites to consider when you are looking. I'll ask around the office regarding independent living facilities in the area. The only one I know of like you are describing is closer downtown on the west side (it's at Mesa and Spicewood Springs). I've known of a couple of people whose mothers were there and both were satisfied with the care received (they required some kind of minimal assistance -- medication, etc., but were otherwise independent). The first one was there over 10 years ago and the second one passed away a few years ago, so my info is a bit dated, but I still work with the daughter of the second one and I'll ask her if she considered any places closer to the northeast side.

That's hilarious information about Tahitian. I don't doubt it for a minute. I bet that there will soon be more services for the elderly. There's now the Lakeside Hospital which is right next to Tahitian, so at least you don't have to go so far for minor emergencies. I understand they're building some sort of cancer facility next door, or something like that. Anyway, the more doctors living and working in the area will hopefully improve things.

I know TV isn't any kind of Sun City (just that it was proposed as a retirement country club enclave at one point), as I currently live in TV (where all my neighbors in my cul de sac are retired except myself and one other). The further you get into the subdivison, the quieter it is. I used to live in Cedar Creek (near McKinney Roughs) on 9 acres and my place in TV is way quieter. Also, I now have an ironclad excuse to not come into the office on bad weather days, as there's no way I can get out of my cul de sac, let alone Tahitian Drive when there's ice on the road. Back when I lived in Cedar Creek I would still go in as the roads were all flat and not difficult to maneuver (I lived in Maine before Texas and so while I don't enjoy that kind of driving, it's a foreign concept to me to not go into work anyway).

Mom signed a lease on an apartment yesterday. She will be moving to Heritage Pointe near 183 and MLK. It is a very nice place, and very reasonalby priced. Not only is she close to my nephew like she wanted, she is just two blocks from her G-Grandson's school.
