Soil depth required for growing heliconia

Woe is me. I started digging a hole for my heliconia collinsiana when only 7-8 inches down I hit a huge rock. I tried digging a few feet away in hopes of finding earth, but this massive boulder seems to be everywhere I want to plant. My question is, should I give up on planting my heliconia here, or try to add some soil to the existing 7-8"? What depth is required to allow the plant to root and grow into a nice, sturdy plant?

Thanks.

Jules
