pruning durian, marang, pedalai

Hi. From Cairns, Aus. Growing seedlings of all of the above.Would like to keep them 4-5m. What's the best way of doing this ? Cut the top off once they get to the height and then just keep doing it. The marang and pedalai seem to reshoot easily around damaged areas. Be really interested in anyones experience in keeping durians at this height. Google trolling only resulted in 1 brief mention from somewhere in the phillipines. Regard Jim

Not many folks growing durian in the states. Couple people from Florida are doing okay. You might post your question on the TropicalFruit forum instead. You have the right idea for pruning.

Jim , Durian can be kept low . Local grower is trellising many species of exotics to cyclone proof them .

Lok in youtube for Peter Salleras , a Mission Beach Tourisn series of videos , you can see trellising behind Peter as he reels of the names of the many spp. he grows .

Rheedia laterifolia is in the Garcinia (mangosteen) family. the Garcinia family has confusing names and are very commonly misnamed. i have Garcinia Laterifolia. its probably the easiest to grow in the Garcinia family, i read it grows wild in Brazil. it is also called Lemon Drop Mangosteen or Achachairu. there are several varieties of Garcinias, i know there are two distinct fruit that are both called Madruno. in Australia they commercially grow achachairu (picture above) but call it achacha, which is wrong because Achacha is another different fruit. to make it more confusing various sources disagree on the correct species and genus names.

I have some questions: First, is thing just a collection of varieties, or are you doing any breeding and development as well? And do you think any work being done could eventually bring any of the fruits you work with into economic significance? Also, I'm a college student, planning on doing a dual major in horticulture and finance, and I'm looking at a couple of different career paths, one of them being dropping the business end of things entirely and just going into a pure horticultural position, like becoming a professor of pomology at a university (or something like that). My main interest is in the (molecular) breeding and genetic engineering of underutilized potential crops, particularly fruits, tropical or otherwise, with the goal of bringing diverse crops to commercial significance. Do you have any particular tidbits of advice about going into the field of underdeveloped fruit species that you wish you would've known at my point that you could impart? Thanks.

Some info I found said Jackfruit soil should not be amended w/fertilizer until 3 months or established. When grown from seed, checking the roots each time it is repotted. If the tap root is bent, cut just above the bend, or the root system will be compromised, and a weak , non fruiting tree will be the result. Once sprouted, they are grown in the greenhouse for about 30 more days. Then, they are transplanted in a deep 4"by 4" by 14" deep nursery pots with standard nursery mix, same as what they are sowed in. 40% peat, 30% coarse sand, 20% cypress sawdust, and 10% perlite. 100 days in 50% shade house, with overhead irrigation for 12 minutes a day. At this time of transplanting, they get a slow release fertilizer (18-6-8 nutricote), a drench of liquid fertilizer (20-20-20) and chelated iron(sequestrene) at recommended rates. At about 100 days they are the diameter of a pencil, perfect for grafting. Those that are not grafted are checked for tap root restriction, and cut if necessary, then transplanted into a 7" by 7" by 14" nursery pot. They are then given another dose of the same fertilizer treatment as the first transplant. Temperatures are about 82-89 and 77 at night, fahrenheit. Ph is 6-7.5

Thanks for the replies. Read an article which I think was from the Cape Tribulation Exotic fruit farm up north of here which discussed survival rates of their many types of fruit trees in one of the recent cyclones. Of all the species the jackfruit were the least affected and survived best. Am I right in assuming that other Artocarpus species would have similar characteristics. The Durians did very badly and an associate at work lost all of hers (all mature trees)- she attributes this to the root system which is very susceptible to being shaken about causing damage to all the micro roots/filaments. Very interested to know anyones experience with topping durians. Plan to leave all til about 4-5m before topping. Currently have 4 marang ( the guy who grew them reckons only 1 out of 4 or 5 end up fruiting well), 2 pedalai which both neglected seedlings and are already quite deformed (can't find anyone selling here) and then 6 durians spread around the garden. All in a clay soil which is not ideal but on a slope so should hopefully avoid them getting too wet in the rainy season.

im growing Cheena which is a chempendak x jackfruit hybrid and marang.

Jackfruit trees down here generally do not get too large but i will top mine if it gets above 20 feet.

never seen one but pedalai is a huge tree, you can top it but i have a feeling you will be fighting a tree that grows upright and wants to be large

Thanks for the replies.Had a look at the one vid on Y-tube and briefly saw what you mentioned Ariodeana.Have no idea but sounds very interesting. Cyclone Larry killed all of an acquaintance's mature durians and I am on the side of the hill at freshwater so if a future cyclone crosses the coast north of us will cop it ! Assume then that instead of topping you would build a pretty sturdy frame and bend the growing branches along them ? . Coppers log uprights in concrete spaced a log length apart and simply joined at a height of ?? 2m. Because I'm on a slope I have had to terrace the back yard. Would be good to fill one terrace with a couple of trees which would be below roof height and protected.
Interesting food for thought ... would make hand pollinating the flowers (greatly increases the fruiting according to a guy who grows a few durians here) and picking much easier.
Any idea if the trees I have mentioned are suitable for this ?
