Zitro and maden the shade are having tiny tots. So I thought I'd start a tread on the silly stuff that happened to anyone who had a baby on here.

I'll start. None of the older peps would let me lift something up above my head. They said it would cause the umbilical cord to wrap around the baby's neck. They were told this during their pregnancies and took it seriously. I read in more current literature that this wasn't true(wive's tale) and would have to sneak around to reach for something! It made working at a pet store a challenge. It was part of my job to get the stuff off the top shelves and I'd be bombarded by concerned grandmas!

I was preggers over winter so I don't have any gardening stories. PJ

Erin's short term memory is ...non-existent.
She is constantly late because she forgot where she put her purse, shades, & keys. However 99% of the time while she is looking for she is actually wearing/carrying them.

She's probably just remembered what it was like to go into labor again. In her subconscious hyteria she's trying to block it out again.This has "bled" into other areas of her memory. Mother nature is very cunning. You forget what labor is like (hit by a truck) until you get pregnant again...then it's too late! PJ

Thanks so much Bill for responding! I'm not worried about using too much... actually trying to figure out how little I can get away with. We kept to one bin and used the bin size to keep the amount of worms we had under control. Now I'm kinda regretting my decision and thinking about starting another bin now rather then in the fall as I'm now worried I don't have enough castings for gardening needs later this summer. I was just adding a spoonful to my transplants in the ground and counting on that and natual soil to grow healthy flowers. But now with these container veggies I'm growing not quite sure what to give as the main source of nutrients for the veggies are going to be coming from the castings themselves (not counting on the potting soil to have much in there for the plants as it's mostly peatmoss and perlite). Also we are using bottom self watering (wicking)to do this so 'nutrients' won't be purged away. Basically now that we've got the vermicomposting down (actually learned they happier the more you kinda neglect them and just keep em warm and fed LOL tough little buggers) we are ready to learn how to most efficently use their castings as a main source of nutrients with veggies. Was under the assumption that castings are more packed with nutrients (on top of the bonus of microbial activity) that maybe less could be used in comparison to say standard organic compost some grow their plants with... in a container setting. Was I wrong to think that? Not sure if anyone has ever tried to use castings in such a way or it's even possible. P.S. Also, after talking to the hubby this morning we are hoping to get enough worms going now to supply castings in place of regular compost in a small (2x3) square foot garden next year. Normally the homemade soil requirement is 1/3 peatmoss, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 organic compost. Of course we would be using less castings.. maybe 20 percent of the mix.. and maybe up the amount of peatmoss and perlite a bit.

Lynn- we have the orange one with devil ears. I cannot even find a tooth puncture on it. Love it! And why are the nylabones so, so.... how do I say this.... falic?! We get the ones that look like a bone at Walmart for 7.99, way cheaper than pet stores. He can gnaw tiny flecks off it so we have to watch it closely. He tosses it around on the wood floors, or shoves it at you when you walk by. The sharp edges are annoying. Whenever we can't find it we look under the stove, it usually slides under there. This Cuz thing is amazing. He picks it up as soon as we head downstairs for breakfast. He runs around chasing us while we get ready for school/work. As soon as we come home he runs for it again. Cats can be quite amazing too I agree. Sealy likes to hide between the shower curtain and liner and tease the dog. When he looks in one end, she runs out the other side. He will keep looking for her only to have us show his that she left the room 5 minutes ago. Such joy!

Disclaimer - This happened in a very rural area in the 1960s. Yes, our dog roamed the countryside at will, but seldom traveled further than our property and the two neighboring farms. He visited one to swim and catch frogs in their pond; he visited the other to herd their cattle. I would have paid more attention to the turtle had I thought he was in any danger --- but I was a child. When I was young I had a beautiful black Lab/German Shepard mix...he was big happy goofball with a mad, rabid protective streak. My dear, sweet Rebel. He adopted a friend, a box turtle. We called them terrapins, but they were the big, boxy, land turtles. He brought it home one evening in Spring and carried around with him nearly all summer long. When he got in his bed on the back porch, he'd put the turtle in there with him. If he was in the back yard, he'd carry the turtle with him, set it down and leave it there while he went about his patrolling, hunting, and herding the neighbors cows (not milk cows) into their barn. When he came back to our place he'd find the turtle and bring it to the house. If he came inside the house we had to make him leave Turtle outside. He'd set it by his dinner bowl while he ate. If the turtle wandered off, he'd retrieve it after dinner. The turtle seemed to thrive all summer so he must have gotten enough alone time to find food. One bad habit of Rebel's proved to be the downfall of the turtle. Rebel's water bowl was a large, three-gallon pail. We kept it by the pump house so it was easy to keep fresh water out for him. When he got a drink, he would sometimes dunk the turtle in the pail, drink his water, then dunk his head under to get the turtle out. By the time we realized what he was doing, it was too late. One day he apparently got distracted while he was drinking and forgot his turtle. It was sad. The funeral was attended by Mildred, the lone Rhode Island Red hen, Ducky Lucky, the wild, rescued Mallard duck, Samantha the Calico Cat (and the best copper head snake catcher in the county), a lonely and confused Rebel, my Grandmother, and a very young version of me. Turtle later had to be re-interred by a friend a couple miles away. Rebel wasn't content to let him rest in peace. He never got another special Turtle, even though there were always several to be found around the place.

laurie_2008 I have 2 chairs. I found them sitting in the rain outside a resale shop a long time ago. They were $25 each. This is the 2nd reupholstery. I found the fabric on ebay long before we decided to do the chairs. I thought I would recover my DR chairs, but then we used it for the LR. It photographed much brighter than it appears in the room. Oldbat2be The family is presidential. A few years ago when I posted a photo of our current president's kitchen on the kitchen forum, I was accused of using the forum for political purposes, which I certainly did not intend. So let's just say this president, to whom I am fantasizing attributing my lamp, is rated the greatest president of the 20th century by Dems and Repubs alike. PJ, I can't imagine you'd have to reach up for too many things. You're the kind of person that little ol' me likes to have around to do my reaching for me.

Let's see, did anything funny happen to me? I can't think of anything much. Oh, DH had a co-worker that was an actor, and he invited us to one of his parties when I was about 3 or 4 months pregnant, not quite showing yet. (It's been so long, I don't remember when I started showing.) Anyway, this party was quite interesting, full of theatre people. A man approached me, and thought I'd be perfect to be in the play he was going to direct, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf." It turns out that the part he wanted me for was that of a young wife that has a hysterical pregnancy, meaning she thinks she's pregnant, has the symptoms of being pregnant, but isn't really. I explained to the gentleman that I was pregnant, so he'd really need to reconsider. He actually kept on about it for a while, thinking that I had that perfect, "mousy" look, until I convinced him that by the time the play was going to be presented, I'd be about 8 months pregnant, and no one would believe it was all in my mind. Although I knew it wasn't personal, I was actually kind of insulted that he thought I looked mousy, anyway.

Thanks Sally, I think it would be nice to be petite and dainty. NOBODY has ever described me as "cute" either.

Mousy? WTF? You're fairly outgoing and have an opinion so it wasn't your personality. You have tons of deep brown/reddish highlighted gorgeous,wild curly hair, tan skin and (not a mousy color in sight)so it wasn't your looks. The shirt I saw you wearing was dark purple,with a multicolored,bright geometric design across the front so it's not your style either. (Your pic is on Garden Gate if your wondering about my superb memory about what you were wearing.)
I guess it's true about some theatrical people having a problem with drugs.
You'd be cute pregnant. I'll bet you stayed skinny and it looked like you swallowed a beach ball! PJ

First of all, I have only seen pics of you Sally but I have told several people how attractive you are

The funniest thing was the old wives tale that I heard all of the time from my first MIL "oh, don't touch yourself while you're pregnant or you'll mark the baby"

Eventhough, I didn't believe that.It was years later and already had 2 girls when I was pregnant with my first son, we went to the movies to see JAWS, right after "we're gonna need a bigger boat" part a little boy started hollering "Mommy,Mommy make her let go of me"

When I got scared my arms went to each side and I had a death grip on the little boy's leg and the other on DH's leg on the other side, lol Instead of covering my eyes or hugging myself I had grabbed away from my body because I didn't want to mark the baby, ugh

I think she meant wherever you touched yourself the baby would be deformed in someway. I have to say tho, I had heard that before while growing up but never paid it any mind until I would be pregnant.

PJ, I wasn't trying to insult you about your height. I envy people that have nice long legs and are tall. I actually did pack on some weight when I was pregnant.

One of my neighbors had to sit flat on the ground to work in her garden the summer before her twins were born.

She said she was afraid she'd tip over if she tried to bend or stoop, & if she squatted or sat on a low seat, she couldn't reach around her big ole tummy.

When she was ready to go in, she'd holler for her hubs to come help her up.

Sally, Huh? You're sweet. I didn't think you'd say that! I do like being tall. I think I'd like being short too tho.
I weighted 200lbs with both boys. I looked like the Titanic! LOL!
sylvia, how's come we never see pictures of the truthfully cool stuff in life? I would laugh until I hurt myself seeing that. Dang,she was determined tho wasn't she? PJ

My first child was born in 1960. My MIL told "them" to put a knife under the bed to cut the pain. At that point the pain wasn't what I wanted to cut/Bobbitt.

I'm not even showing yet, but sometimes I do feel funny bending over, like I might fall! I'm so anxious for the weather to get warmer so I can get some stuff in/out of the ground! I may have to get a skate board or something so I can sit on it and roll down to the next section of the flower bed! haha!
