Need ideas for a good grass for Austin, Texas.
Comments (4)Shadow Turf is a zoysia. I have some and that is not the grass you're looking for. It grows tall fast once it is established. It needs weekly mowing and is fragile to traffic. You're looking for some fantasy grass that doesn't exist. You must be new to Texas. There is only one grass that comes close to some of your requirements. St Augustine is THE grass for South Texas. The Floratam variety is the one you might like the best. You can mow it short but you will have more weeds. Mowing it at the highest setting on your mower is going to work best. Have you considered growing dwarf Mondo (monkey) grass? It does what you want but it is not a grass. It cannot take too much traffic but otherwise, it is pretty good. It's a little slow to get established. One season is not very long to Mondo grass....See MoreWill David Austin Roses Take Full Aftenoon Texas Sun?
Comments (6)David Austin's site lists the roses that do best in hot sun (see the link below--scroll down on that page). I don't know if he hasn't gotten around to classifying his newer roses or not, but most of them are not on the list. Abe Darby is, however. The only one that I grow on that list is Molineux and July and August here are often 100 degrees or higher, so I guess that might qualify as hot. Molineux does fine through most of hot July as long as I don't forget to water it. However, a few weeks into August, and it tends to give up struggling against the heat and goes semi-dormant, waiting for the cooler autumn weather to return. While some Austins get fried edges in the strong sun, others aren't that much affected--Molineux being one of them, although there have been occasional days when its blooms get wilted in the sun. Usually that means they need a drink. By the way, I do not find that my Austins need noticeably more water than my other roses, but that may be because I don't grow GC which some claim is a waterhog. On the other hand, my Austins definitely do not like missing their watering when it gets that hot. so just water regularly. That said, many Austins prefer some afternoon shade -- to look their best. Comments (17)These are so slow growing, it's often better to have a local nursery order the largest blooming size you can afford. They may hesitate if you're lower than hardiness zone 8, but worth checking with them. You might be able to order direct from Monrovia for delivery to a local nursery, but my experience has found it more dependable to have a willing manager at a local store they supply order it for you. If time is not an issue, seedlings are occasionally offered on ebay or Etsy (hidden among dozens of seed listings); though, these will be 3+ years from blooming depending upon the growing conditions you provide....See MoreDavid Austin's English Roses in Texas
Comments (22)I love Austins, and a select few of them are my absolute favorite roses in the garden, but some of them are absolute dogs here in Texas. If you narrow down a list of what you like, please post and I'll comment on which ones I've had. My secret to a healthy rose garden is plenty of tea roses and china roses. Both classes are antiques that LOVE Texas conditions and bloom their hearts out till we get nights down to 27 degrees. The Austins are a risk- none are really healthy, but some are so fragrant that it's worth it. (Jude the Obscure, Mary Magdaline, Scepter d Isle, Tamora). And like I said, others are just awful, though I'm sure they are beautiful in areas with cooler night time temps. I'm too lazy and have too many gardens to spray anything so there are lots of roses that have gotten the boot from my yard over the years!...See MoreCarlincooling
