Will David Austin Roses Take Full Aftenoon Texas Sun?
Comments (6)David Austin's site lists the roses that do best in hot sun (see the link below--scroll down on that page). I don't know if he hasn't gotten around to classifying his newer roses or not, but most of them are not on the list. Abe Darby is, however. The only one that I grow on that list is Molineux and July and August here are often 100 degrees or higher, so I guess that might qualify as hot. Molineux does fine through most of hot July as long as I don't forget to water it. However, a few weeks into August, and it tends to give up struggling against the heat and goes semi-dormant, waiting for the cooler autumn weather to return. While some Austins get fried edges in the strong sun, others aren't that much affected--Molineux being one of them, although there have been occasional days when its blooms get wilted in the sun. Usually that means they need a drink. By the way, I do not find that my Austins need noticeably more water than my other roses, but that may be because I don't grow GC which some claim is a waterhog. On the other hand, my Austins definitely do not like missing their watering when it gets that hot. so just water regularly. That said, many Austins prefer some afternoon shade -- to look their best. Comments (3)May I respectfully point out that Austin roses are under patent and really shouldn't be traded this way. There are lots and lots of true antiques to trade that are not under patent. Many provide the same romance although perhaps not the distinctive Austin color palette. Look at the Pemberton hybrid musks, the noisettes and the hybrid perpetuals..there are great large flowered climbers and true tea roses.....See MoreLooking for English/David Austin cuttings

Comments (3)Wait until spring to do any pruning because cutting them back now will trigger new succulent growth that could be damaged during freezes this winter. That said you may want to just let Abraham Darby be the short climber it wants to be by letting the long canes arch over (if you have the room) or tie them to a short trellis, although some people keep cutting it back to make it into a tall bush. Jude may throw out a long cane occasionally which you can cut back in the spring or summer. It is more likely to be happy as a bush than Abraham Darby. These are two of my favorite Austin roses, by the way. It may be that you have flower beetles rather than Japanese beetles. Both are a pain to have in the garden, but flower beetles are less of a pain I think. They are easier to control by hand picking and spraying the ground with beneficial nematodes in spring and summer to kill the grubs from which they hatch. After treatment with beneficial nematodes a couple of times I didn't have flower beetles (Euphoria sepulcralis, Fabricius) for years, but they turned up again last year so I treated again. You can google them to see what each beetle looks like. Here is the flower beetle on Prairie Sunrise last summer: Applying insecticides won't do much good for beetles, but unfortunately they will kill honey bees and other beneficial insects. You can buy beneficial nematodes at plant nurseries or on line. They will stay in the soil and do their jobs of killing a lot of unwanted insects that live in the soil like grubs, fleas and ants as long as the soil doesn't dry out.
