New to the topiary - needing preliminary help

Hi- I am growing some plants inside in pots for winter - lemon, orange, olive and rosmary - I would like to cut them for a orangery. Where do I start - with which branches? And how high should the tree be before I start? Does the tree grow out at the sniped of branch from the trunk? (my olice is about 50 cm high) - Thxs

I guess the reason you haven't received any answers yet, is that it is very difficult to describe precisely the procedures necessary to shape the plants. However,it is not a difficult technique though and only requires your imagination. If you have time to spend in a library, research a book on topiaries. I delight in looking at old European gardens and try to copy them in miniature form. One hint I can give you is this. You can begin with simple shapes likes the standard and the conical shape. One hint I can give you is this. When you look at a plant, think of a large lollipop or an inverted ice cream cone. Try to use your imagination and superimpose it over the plant. In the case of the lollipop, remove any branches and leaves that fall along the handle portion exposing the trunk. In the case of the conical shape, again you can superimpose the 'cone' over the plant, and trim off branches and leaves in that shape. A better method actually is to simply take a piece of string and tie it at top and then take the other end and take it to the rims of the pot. Trim off the leaves that fall outside of the line. Repeat all through out the plant.

The plants can be any height you'd it to be. I suppose that would mean anything that you can manage to move about.

You can train plants from a very small plant or from a large plant. It doesn't matter. A young plant is more maleable and so it is easily shaped. An older/larger plant has a more woody trunk and therefore you cannot do anything to the shape of that trunk. With rosemary for example, I like it as a standard topiary and as a conical shaped topiary. I don't think you can get it any higher than say 3 feet, but generally speaking it is easier to get a straight trunk from it, by tying it to a stake every few inches to keep it straight.

Oranges and Lemons. They are really nice if left somewhat 'natural'. That is a semi-round shape, keep the trunk exposed like the regular standard topiary and trim around the plant to make it look round but not too strictly round.

I'm not not an expert on olives, so don't really know how olives will behave if it is cut down to the trunk. Perhaps you can request this info elsewhere in the forum.

Susana, In regards to "Tip Pruning vs. "Pinch Pruning" I believe the following is what you are asking for. Pinch pruning is when you are physically pinching off new growth while it is still supple. Using the thumb and forefinger frequently pinch back soft growth throughout the growing season this will allow you to avoid future pruning. The benefits and reasons for pinch pruning are to redirect growth and to increase the plant density (if the plant can not grow upward it will start branching outward). Pinching is also used for dis-budding flowers and thinning fruit trees. When you say Âpruning the tipÂ I believe you are referring to the removal of terminal buds which will result in next lateral bud to become dominant on the branch. You want to prune near a lateral (side) bud that is pointing in the direction that you want to train the branch to grow. This is very useful in free form topiary when you have a bare spot in you display which you want to fill in. PS If you have any in progress pictures of your display I would like to see. Depending on where you are shopping that price is not out of the norm for something that large. Without knowing what plant the topiary were I couldn't tell you if they are hardy to your area. But I am guessing that they may have been junipers. Topiaries are fairly easy to do on your own, The Complete Book of Topiary is a good book for a beginner and even shows you how you can make your own, using indoor house plants and landscaping plants. Take a look at it at your library and take down notes or go out and buy it. You could buy a smaller plant and have an impressive spiral in no time with very little money. Hope this helps. Wow you all are amazing! Beautiful ideas! Thanks for all of the thoughts. You really have my wheels spinning now considering what a difference incorporating the sunroom makes. I am going to take some pictures of the sunroom structure (including underneath the structure) tomorrow and post it in case anyone is able to draw any conclusions from it. But until then, I can answer a few of the questions you had. The basement does have an exterior door, which is located under the sunroom (you have to walk up a few concrete steps to get to grade, at which point you can either exit into the yard or take the stairs up to the sunroom). The rest of the area under the sunroom is just a storage area where I keep bags of mulch, firewood, etc. I will check for more detail tomorrow,but the sunroom is supported by posts anchored into cement piers. What I don't know is whether those piers sit on a foundation or are just free-floating. I thought of two other things which might bode well for it being a well-supported structure which we could expand to: 1) our inspector told us he believes the sunroom is original to the house, so I would then assume it was built on a foundation (?); 2) the sunroom holds up the roofline - aka there is normal roofing above the sunroom, which makes me think the structure is strong enough to support the second story and roof and thus should be expandable (?) PS - Intriguing idea about moving the hallway to kitchen to the other end of the house and moving the doorway to keep traffic and noise away from the bedrooms. Currently we use back bedroom as a spare room and the room off the dining room as an office. Someday we will use one (probably back room) for a kid's bedroom. I agree with Mrs. Pete. You need to sort of stretch that into a longer, narrower plan. Windows in a kitchen will make it a much more pleasant place to work. In general, this plan would benefit from a greater window:interior space ratio. I know you "like the floorplan." But there are probably a lot of plans you would like. And, with the right person designing, you could have one that gives you more light, passive solar features, and still be economical to build. I suspect you have a builder who is used to working on suburban lots, so in designing this house he is defaulting to what usually works there. But what works there doesn't necessarily make for a good "country house." I'm going to link here a series of threads where other folks came with designs that, like yours, didn't quite work. And in these cases (because it's Houzz) they ended up working with someone of design talent here on the forum for something much better. Most of these are "after" threads, so make sure you visit the original thread when they link back, which they often do. Yes, a lot of these are 2 stories. I assure you that architects also design ranches. It's just that in each of these cases, the second story suited the inhabitants.
