New to topiari - how do I maintain it?

I received a topiari for Christmas. This is my first one and I have no idea how to maintain it. It's in a 10" pot and is the shape of a duck (or swan?). The tag doesn't identify the plant but I'm guessing it is Boxwood.

How do I maintain the shape of this plant? Can it remain in the pot? The wire frame is about the size of the pot so I'm wondering what will happen if I transplant it to the garden, or if that is necessary.

It was a Christmas gift so I want to maintain it just as it was given to me, but I'm new to topiari and need some help.

trim new growth as it develops so it matches surrounding growth to keep plant form. if you wait too long while plant is actively growing you can lose shape. use sharp cutting scissors to trim soft growth. if you trim every week or two
plant shouldn't be a problem. key is only trim active new growth. somewhere down the line the plant will need to be repotted or root pruned. try to find out exactly what the plant is to better care for it. once you i.d. the plant you may indeed be able to plant directly outside if in right growing location. then keep trimming as it grows to stay in shape of wire frame. indoors you should have plant situated as close to bright light as possible and rotate plant every couple of days to promote even growth.

Maintaining your shape with regular pruning is a must. Don't be suprised this spring, if you come out and find new shoots reaching skyward out of your plant. There is a technique of pinch pruning which consists of actually pinching the tip bud of new growth off. This causes the plant to go into a sort of self defense mode and it will respnd by sending out new shoots lower on th branch. This is your ultimate objective as it will result in thich busy growth in your plant.

Jumbo, you should at least put in the state where you are in "My Page details " and when taking note of all the mostly good advice here take note of where the poster lives. I have at least half a dozen starting new spikes and have never had any problems growing spikes to flowering in past years. The key sentence is in the post from orchid126 about the orchid being comfortable where you are. i do run the air conditioning system for an hour or two at night. but that doesn't seem to do harm because the house is open plan and the vents are not near the orchids which are not moved from windowsills during winter. Much below 12C and Cold and Wet will give you problems but other than that and especially if you can get some gentle filtered sunlight on the leaves, you should do fine.

It should be fine if you let it go back to a more natural shape though it could go through an awkward stage. Upright rosemaries are really easy to maintain, just trim them like you do your hedges. Trailing rosemaries can be let loose to ramble with just a snip or two if they get out of hand. I agree with Barbara about watering. Rosemary doesn't like to get bone dry; they turn toes up and die quickly if they're in a container especially. I keep mine on the dry side of moist and they do fine. If you keep yours in the window, you may find that it will get nectar and petals all over the glass when it flowers. Veronica

lavenders don't do well as topiaries unless you would like to shape them as ball hedges. Rosemary on the other hand is a good starter plant. Choose one with a straight stem, planted in a good sized pot and let it grow as tall as it is possible. Stick in a straight bamboo stick as a guide and use raffia or twine to attach the main leader stem to the stick. Remove all leaves above and below areas you've selected to be the balls. Do not cut off the tip of the leader stem until you are satisfied with the height of the plant. I think you can grow this plant up to 2 1/2 ft or perhaps even 3 feet. Once the plant has achieved the appropriate height, nip off the top. This will force branching in the areas below. Continue to remove any growth in the areas between the 'balls'. Let everythings else grow and nip off stem tips as they grow to certain lenght. This again forces that stem to branch out and continue nipping off the tips until you have your ball shape. The lowest ball is usually the largest and the top the smallest. A lot of patience is required when starting from scratch. Rosemaries also do not do well indoors unless it receives a decent amount of moisture. It is also susceptible to spider mites and powdery mildew and so everynow and then, you will need to mist it to prevent this from happening. How do I maintain the old windows?

You are so lucky to have a number of original windows!! Even the new to copy the old are good. I'd get familiar with John Leeke's website for general "how to" information as it applies to maintenance. I'd also get a copy of Terence Meany's book "Working Windows" - from Amazon or, if you are lucky, your local book store. It's the bible for old windows. If you don't ever want to open the windows, I'd leave the storms on all the time. If you want breezes during warm weather, I'd take the storms off in the spring and return them in the fall and I'd do this for those windows you want to open. I wouldn't worry about the 3rd floor unless it's living space. If you find during this winter that your windows are drafty, I'd get spring bronze weather stripping - can get it on line at Kilian Hardware. A local old fashioned hardware store should also have it or have access to it. If everything is functioning properly, I'd be thankful and not worry about doing something just to do it. Dear Mark: first of all thanks for the useful idea of the chicken wire(first buxus topiary).I want to know the difference between "pruning the tip" and "pinchpruning the tip. And Jen,.. luck with your duck!

In regards to "Tip Pruning vs. "Pinch Pruning" I believe the following is what you are asking for.

Pinch pruning is when you are physically pinching off new growth while it is still supple. Using the thumb and forefinger frequently pinch back soft growth throughout the growing season this will allow you to avoid future pruning. The benefits and reasons for pinch pruning are to redirect growth and to increase the plant density (if the plant can not grow upward it will start branching outward). Pinching is also used for dis-budding flowers and thinning fruit trees.

When you say Âpruning the tipÂ I believe you are referring to the removal of terminal buds which will result in next lateral bud to become dominant on the branch. You want to prune near a lateral (side) bud that is pointing in the direction that you want to train the branch to grow. This is very useful in free form topiary when you have a bare spot in you display which you want to fill in.
