Posted the mags today via flat rate priority.

I mailed to Susan today.....didn't have a flat rate envelope. The clerk gave me a choice of first class for $3.63 (2 days) or Priority $4.55 (2 days). So hope 2 days first class is ok??? :)
Sorry Susan, I didn't include a recipe but maybe I will have a good one to send next month. I guess I should get busy cooking!!! (not my favorite pastime).....

Poochella, I have enough for now - I will be mailing mine out next week ( I am out of town until Monday) Question is - should I send all 8 mags at the same time or separate them into 4 each pkg?

Suzanne you can mail them however works best for you. Five seem to fit easily into the priority flat rate mailer if you want to just send an extra one each month. Just a suggestion. Maybe the person you are sending to has a preference.

Jody, March 5th is sure NOT late at all. There are still several who have not mailed or have not posted if they did. Last month by the fifth I was still fiddling around with the list. We are in good shape so far this month.

Wowie!! I just "Won" some 1946 garden magazines on ebay. I can hardly wait to get my hands on them. It will be really interesting to see how things have changed since then. I'm also betting that some things have not changed at all. I love very old magazines but seldom have a chance to get any.

Hey Beth, are the women out gardening in dresses and nylons? And they probably had no Wisk or Spray and Wash, let alone an autmatic washer! I would love to see one of those magazines too. Can you post some photos from it if you have a digital cam?

I'll never know how she did it for 60 years, but my mom always wears little white Keds, perfectly clean, and light colored polyester pants to work in her extensive gardens. Hardly ever a speck of dirt on her; whereas I am outside for ten minutes in my holey blue jeans and look like I've been in the hog wallow for hours.

I'll be sharing these 1946 Magazines starting in April. Will send to my regular person as an extra in the packet and will send to you individually if you are like me and anxious to get your hands on one of these "antique" gardem mags.
They are almost 60 years old and so much has changed since then but of course, so many of the basics stay the same. HArd work, sweat and fighting weeds. Sampling that first tomatoe and sweet corn, 20 min from stalk to table
The first crocous and the "last rose of summer". The June breeze and sun working on your hair, watching the clouds and waiting for rain....

Received my magazines today. Also had packs of seeds that will be winter sown tomorrow. One of the magazines has articles about water gardens. I have to redo my small pond this year my heater quit(shorted out yuck!poor fish) so I can really use the articles> Thanks Abitodd, Greatly appreciated.Liz

Jody! Your magazines arrived today and I thank you for the wonderful variety. Are you trying to get me to start with chickens? Because that huge photo of the gorgeous chicken on the first magazine cover was very appealing to me.
Must resist the chicken urge (think of the manure!~ the gentle clucking and bug eating!..... the coyotes, the bobcat, the cougars, dogs and worms!!) It is very tempting and I will be eager to read up on them.

Dang-- Abitodd: it's like I'm stalking you from thread to thread!

My favorite far and away would be dahlias, tall ones or shorter ones suitable for cutting in just about any color under the sun. There are probably about 10,000 others I could list, but I've got dahlia fever again this Spring.

I am adding to my astilbe/shade garden too this year, so that would be my second choice especially astilbe "Fanal"

Denni, My main thing this year is shrubs. I figure they will take the longest so I should start them first.
I am really yearning for this georgeous witch hazel that is fifty smackers....... I want to find out how tasty witch hazel is to deer before I plunk out that kind of money.That would be mighty expensive fodder even for Bambi.
Also plan for other shrubs and roses but this witch hazel has stolen my heart and at that price, maybe my mind too.LOL

The post from Abitodd reminds me that I was reading the New to Gardening forum where someone was using round up to kill off "eleplant ears". That stirred up some discussion abut what is a weed and offering stuff for trade.
It is so different from one part of the country to another. Being able to trade here on GW is super. A couple years ago I traded off a couple dozen foxgloves that my friend had weeded out and was about to toss into the ocean. I got some nice house plants in trade.

My most wanted plant would be either any sort of fruit tree (I'd love to start an orchard) camellia 'grape soda' or black elephant ears... I can never decide! The huge green elephant ears grow wild around my grandparents house in Florida where I used to live...I can't wait to go down in a few months and come back with hundreds for my yard and to trade with all of you guys.

These 1946 copies of "The Home Garden" are interesting. The articles are still pertinent... things like "how to start a new perennial bed", 12 perennials I wouldn't be without and"how to make new shrubs from old. The basics sure have not changed. They are mostly B&W with a few color pics here and there.
The advertising has a few familiar names but mny are companies I never heard of. The ones I recognise sure must be doing something right like Burpees and Von Bourgendine.
What a nice look at history. Now I'm looking for more "old stuff".

Nature farmer, do they multiply very fast? I was once going to buy a few and wait for them to multiply, but the $10 each price put me off

Euphoria, Sent magazines for march at the begining of the month. Just sent aprils today. The postoffice told me that if you dont send priorty mail just regular it is the last priority and gets put on the truck when there is room. So they are still on their way. Sorry Liz
