A technical question regarding GW posting

I searched for a place to post this and came up with this forum as the best choice.

I have noticed through reading and posting that there are people who can post hyperlinks or links to sources or references right within their text. Those links appear as blue text with underlining.

I wanna know how to do that.

This is a test of what I was told but never tried til now. Go to the website whose link you want to copy. Highlight the address at the top of your screen. Right click and choose copy. Go back to your post and right click and choose paste.

If a link to Plant Delights appears, I've done it right!

? Oh dear, Chas. I'm sorry. Are the links I'm putting in not working? when the type is underlined and blue (at least in my software) in the middle of the text I write, that's a hyperlink. Click on it and you should go straight to the referenced posting. OK, let me try to be clear. The file that buehl maintains in kitchens is something of a group effort. She renews it when the thread is up and keeps it cleaned up and modern-ish in its references. She selects threads, often written by others, regarding general topics of importance when starting out with a kitchen renovation (at least this is my understanding; major apologies if I have some/any of this wrong). When I say "file" I should really say "thread" I think. There is a thread there entitled, currently (click on this): "New To Kitchens? Posting Pics? Read Me! [Help keep on Page 1]" Because GardenWeb's software is, as one far more knowledgeable about this stuff than I, says, "dinosaurean", there is no formal place for FAQs. So people/buehl on the kitchen forum (KF) have assembled their own here and there. Since there's no way to place a "sticky" thread, buehl updates this thread with links to files of interest on general "housekeeping" topics. The remainder of the thread is devoted to folks bumping the stupid thing up, frequently, to stay on page 1 where it has some hope of being found by newcomers! Before I lose you, let me draw your attention to the small type to the right of what you're reading here; it's green on my screen. One of those hyperlinks allows you to save a posting (and no, not a whole thread, maddeningly) to a space in your account for future reference. Note that you have to first click to put it there and then click to actually save it (grrrr); follow directions! So when you find someone's explanation you like about something, you have recourse to hold on to it (unless you like more than 50 such comments). BTW, I found buehl's thread on page 3 just now. The KF has a lot more traffic than this one and threads sink like lead. I'll repeat the hyperlink I had before. If you click on this is should bring you straight to buehl's photo-posting notes. This is just for reference, you can't possibly be needing them at this point! But it may still be helpful for you to figure this out in general, and buehl's thread in specific. Design questions regarding a hardwood floor?

Our open living/dining area measures 18' x 30' with a central foyer located on the long wall also, so it is similar in area as yours. The only difference is that all our windows are on the long wall opposite the foyer. The plank width on our pre-finished engineered wood flooring is 3", because we wanted the more traditional look of this width. To make the room appear larger, and for best support because of the layout of our home's floor joists, our planks were laid length-wise along the longer dimensions. To me, the herringbone pattern has always seemed very old-fashioned, yet this may just be my own personal reaction because we had herringbone patterned floors in the military housing we lived in back in the 70's, and those homes were already 20 years old back then! One thing you should consider with herringbone is the cost factor, since I believe it would be much more expensive because so much more material is needed. If you were to have a herringbone pattern, I would suggest that it be laid with the angled pattern directed at the shorter wall dimensions, otherwise I think it would make the room appear much smaller. For some rooms with herringbone floor designs, go to google and type in herringbone wood flooring into your browser, then click on "images", and it will show you lots of photos so you can get an idea of how the pattern looks.

If I see it, when someone complains about the ads I look at how the ads are currently being delivered by reading the gobble-de-gook of the page source. I use some advertising supported software that is wonderful. I could swat the ads, but I don't for two reasons. The ad is actually targeted to something I could use and the ads don't move or flash or or make noise or get in the way of seeing what I'm trying to look at. I permit the advertising because it supports something good that I like. I am also happy to permit the ads on a variety of sites that produce content - like newspapers, blogs and commercial television. I understand that the ads pay for reporters, photographers, etc. I still off the ones that move or make noise, tho. On this forum, the terrific content is all user generated using old, weird software. We don't get iVillage sponsoring Q&A sessions with famous KD's or a chance to talk with famous chefs or the Bluestar engineers or Kraftmaid or the kitchen experts at Kholer. He--, we can't even get a FAQ area. long rant about how they could have controls over the advertising removed I miss skip. I have a suggestion for you, Debbie. Get a second email account to use for your personal mail, like from Mom, your friends, and Blackboard. Keep a second account for Houzz, Petco, Zazzle, Sears, Pottery Barn, Amazon, JoAnn, Burpee (I'm looking at my second account!), you know the stuff. I did this a few years ago and it's been a lifesaver.

And sometimes for the name of the link, I repeat the actual link. makes it clear where the link will lead you.

Could have said:

But sometimes I prefer the former example.

I understand how to insert the hyperlinks, but what I don't understand is how to explain it without actually getting the link.

Bob gave the formula

and then he typed it with
a href="http://moon.google.com/

and Google Moon inserted, but he didn't get the actual link.

I want to be able to explain the process like he did, but I don't know how to do it without actually getting the hyperlink.

I've previewed and revised this follow-up about ten times and I've gotten amazing screwups with weird invalid links. So how do you show how to insert hyperlinks without actually doing it or giving roundabout directions.

The less than and greater than signs are the key. To get the type & g t ; without the signs.

Sorry--I'm a computer moron. Bob, does that mean that I don't use the > or I copied my link exactly as I saw Bob typed it but using the greater/less than key. Also, when I copy the URL, I don't get the "a href" or the when I paste it, so on my last try I typed those things in.

To get a link that's live you need to use the greater and less than keys. There is no space except between the a and the href and there must be quotation marks around the URL. If I type Claire's link exactly as it looks it won't work, but if I omit all the spaces except between a and href and put" marks around http:moon.google.com/ I get:
Google Moon
If you test the link make sure you zoom all the way in.

It is a surprise, especially if you have used google earth. If you haven't tried google earth it is fascinating (at least to me). Wikipedia has a very good description and instructions along with a link to the google earth home page where you can download the free version. The wikipedia article is here: google earth.

Lately I've been leaving out the quotation marks and it still works fine.

Leaving out the quotes will work when using URLs in scripting because there are no spaces in a standard URL.

In some other HTML scripting, the value that comes after the = may have spaces and therefore needs to be quoted.

It is always good practice to use the quotes.

That makes sense - I wondered why people kept putting in the quotes when It worked without them. I think I forgot one day, and it was OK; but then I've been careful about deleting any spaces in the URL.

Note that, under the GW rules for FAQ items, I normally can't insert links. That means the references have to be search topics, not sites.

I hope they'll let me link to sites within GW for informational purposes. That's why I linked to the Garden Web Forum Page and the Hot Pepper Forum Photo FAQ rather than something jazzy like Google Moon.

Why can't you just copy and paste the url in your search box in the url link below and it work?

Using the Optional Link URL box at the bottom of the posting form works fine for one link, but sometimes you want to be able to post more than one link.

In that case it's nice to be able to post several hyperlinks, rather than post the long URL's which a lot of people won't bother to copy and paste.

Is there a mistake on the Font size for 16 PT below this in the instructions?

WHAT COMMANDS ARE THERE BESIDES COLOR AND SIZE?

A few useful tags are:

red

Well, I see it will not even show up when copy and pasted...hmmmm

I thought there would/should be an equal number of ...but do not know HTML.

Thanks Sue, there were several mistakes. I think I've corrected them here. Also, once they get copied they change into active tabs so you have to retype the commands yourself. Revising this thing is driving me mad.

A few useful tags are:

If you have Firefox, I'm guessing this is new since the OP, you can use a simple tool from Copy as HTML Link 1.1
