Ads that fill up the entire page

There's an advert on the main page of THS that fills up the entire page when it loads. I'm about to stop coming to this site, because the ads are getting way too obnoxious.

I'm seeing no ads there except a descrete frame labeled Sponsored Links from Yahoo!

Do these things appear at different times in different parts of the country? Several people on heating and airconditioning are seeing pop-ups that others of us do not see.

Yeah, South Beach Diet ad that opens new tabs, you click close and it opens another. Most annoying advertising site I ever visit. I used Safari and it was really bad; Firefox is better, but still annoying enough to not come back.

suggestion: iVillage - find other ways to make money on this site.

I already do use T8 for about 80% of my plant room. The extra light yeah is a problem. I try to either place my other gesnariads or place the coleus there. Other shelves I have sheets of paper taped over them to diffuse the lights. There are a few remaining T12s, but they are a bit limited supply. I used to get them much cheaper than the T8, but now it isn't so. They are being phased out. The coleus are a few NOID's (though I suspect Twist and Twirl is one (see it grown in the conservatory where I got the plant as a door prize some years ago. And one variety I've had in some form or another since 1995. Most of the newest coleus I have right now are from seed, exhibition mix, and carefree. Those are going outside in the little front shade garden by the apartment building. I've yet to see mealybugs int he coleus. I suspect I got them from sale plants in a show a year ago. I was slow removing my show plants out of the bins, so everyone who shared that bin got them eventually. Ugh. Overall the infestation seems spotty. Some have them and some don't, because I do use systemic granules in the soil. The ones that missed treatment or have been in the same pot for a number of years and not been treated recently seem to have them. The recently repotted or treated don't. And ones dried up and sans roots, I notice the mealies don't like either. I find them on the main trunk under the soil. Very easy to treat, but harder for the plant to survive post treatment. (I tend to be slow repotting, so they might rot in the water/insecticide solution I hold them in before I have a block of time to repot. Soil: Coconut coir seems to work well with wicking. It retains more moisture than peat but compacts more. I have to use either more perlite or orchid mix to compensate and allow for more air. I also rinse it well to reduce any salt in it. I also mix in soil moist. I've heard that stuff is not ideal in wick mixtures, but under high heat, I notice it seems to be needed. I had one sale plant using yarn (not cotton based I guess?). Owie.. I don't blame you! I just checked here in Okie and I don't seem to have that showing up on the Oklahoma Gardening Web forum. Maybe you could try setting your pop-up blocker to not allow pop ups from Gardening Web, or maybe round up a moderator who could give some advice. On PalTalk there is a way to block their banners and ads by certain settings on your own pc. You might try it with Gardening Web. What you'd do is on Internet Explorer, go to tools, then click on Internet Options, then click on Security, and then click on the red circle with the diagonal bar across it which is "restricted sites". Click and it will open an area with a blue bar that indicates "sites"..click to open, and there will be a place where you can type in the words, advertising.kygardeningweb.com. I don't know for sure if this will work or be the right string of words for gardening forum, web, whatever, but you could try it and see. I get so frustrated they have to peddle this garbage everywhere! Good luck... Barbara

I assume you are referring to Momordica charantia, aka Bitter Melon or Balsam Pear? It is a less well-known (in the USA) member of the Cucurbitaceae family. We do not know enough about the fresh bitter gourds you have, unless you harvested them yourself, to know if they were fully mature when harvested. When you harvest for seed-saving from members of the cucurbit family, it is best to let the fruit get overripe. For example, with cucumbers you leave them onto the vine until they turn yellowish-orange. I think the same thing would be true of bitter melon/bitter gourd if you wanted to save seed from it. With cucurbits, in order to harvest the best and the most seeds to plant, it is best to leave the fruit on the vine for about 3 weeks after you'd harvest it to eat. That extra time on the vine allows the seeds to mature. So, if your bitter gourds had enough time on the vine, the seeds likely are viable (assuming they were pollinated by insects). The only way to know is to try some. Scoop them out of the bitter melon and let them dry. You should dry them to the point that you can snap one in half. If they bend but don't break, they aren't dry enough. Then you can plant them or store them. Bitter melon seeds germinate in a week or two in really warm conditions (soil temps between 75 and 85 degrees). If you want, you can ferment the seeds before drying them. Fermentation often will kill some disease pathogens and also often gives you a higher germination rate. Bitter melon seeds are very hard once dried, so to increase the odds of getting good germination, scarify the seed coat by nicking it with a knife, but don't cut too deeply into the seed. You just want to nick the coat, not cut the whole seed in half. If you want to buy bitter melon seeds, they are available from several online retailers. I think the first time I bought any it either was from Seed Savers Exchange or from Willhite Seeds, but that was a long time ago. Evergreen Seeds would have several varieties of bitter gourd/bitter melons, and so will Kitazawa Seeds, which I've linked below. "The really do want to close this place down don't they. patti" Those pop-up adds pay I-village to advertise here. Servers and/or server space isn't exactly cheap or free. I would say they really want to keep the site up and running, without having to charge the users/members. Many times previously, others have suggested installing a pop-up blocker. I never see any ads here with firefox. The NoScript extension blocks the pop ups and Remove It Permanently blocks the others.

I get a full page video ad all the time, ANNOYING AS ALL HELL. It's BS IMHO. Rediculous. I'm close to bailing out here as well. I don't blame you a bit.

Bob, thanks for those links. I just got the new Firefox and hadn't gotten the extensions yet. Haven't been here in awhile, and the popup I got after posting in the brug forum hung up my browser and I had to close and reload!

Oh for the good old days...

Using plain old ie here and never get any pop ups. In fact my blocker has been off for over a week and I still haven't seen an ad of any kind.

They backed off the ads for sure, I haven't seen a full page ad in a week or 2.
I'm REALLY tired of ads, seriously. Radio, TV, newspapers, magazines and now the web it's getting rediculous. I bale out on sites that over do ads. There are too many other sites to put up with that crap....

Paying members don't get ads. I would never use this site if I were not a paying member.

If I use CCleaner or otherwise clear history or cache, I have to log in again. Before I log in there are all sorts of annoying things, but they disappear as soon as I log in. Never any ads. Sandy

Well we had Firefox on our PC but we had to get rid of it as it interfered with our online banking making things a real pain! So now I have to put up with ads and surveys when on the PC. A lot of the time I use my phone to browse the net using Opera Mini 3,no ads at all! Opera on the PC?

Opera might do the job for you. You can use firefox and get the IE View Lite extension. After getting the extension you go to your bank's page in firefox and right click on the page then on the drop down menu click on 'view this page in IE'. From then on when you go to your banks page in firefox it will open in internet explorer. You can do your banking then close that page and continue surfing in firefox.

I don't know how it is done, perhaps one could ask on computer help, but my spouse set up two 'users' on one machine. One is FireFox most things and the other is IE for business such as banking. To get from one to the other is just a couple of clicks.

I use IE and have McAfee security with pop-up blocker. BUT -- the ads are how this site can survive with no fees paid. The advertisers pay fees to the folks who own this site and so we can use it for FREEcolor> 24/7/365 !! Get a pop-up blocker.
