Hi,

Lovely pics! Your volunteer is a Torenia, a pretty shade annual. I've been wanting one of those Turtlehead plants. Your pink blends are gorgeous. Just gave Golden Zest to my mom, it didnt bloom well for me. Love the scent though! Thanks for sharing,

Too bad it's an annual... The plant looks so pretty, the growth is compact and there's lots of buds on it.
To me it's still an absolute surprise - I've never had this plant before in my garden. Must be birds... or wind.

Huttnem--Your picture is absolutely gorgeous! I had ordered both Golden Zest and Lady Emma Hamilton many months ago. They should be delivered soon. I'm just trying to figure out which one gets placed in a very prominent spot in front of the house and which one will be along the front of the hedge in the back. We have a small yard, so both will easily be seen from the house. Any suggestions on which to place in the front and which in back? How about disease resistance with either of these roses? Is the fragrance noticable from a few feet away? Thanks for your help. Kim

The Macartney rose is hardy enough here in Tropical Minnesota, zone 4a. It suffers winter about the same as other HT's. It dies to the snow or mulch line, but has enough vigor to restore itself and then some. It is a nice rose here and the only complaint is that it could flower more. In good growing years it gets over five foot and is among the tallest HT's. It just smells so good too. Lemon Zest struggles here. It does not flower very well, the the few it produces are wonderful. It did not earn it's keep here so I gave it to a friend who has it in a sheltered spot with a Southern exposure. It is still struggling and may not get fully established. Resurrecting this thread because J&P has ressurrected Golden Zest! They have this new legacy program where they bring back a few older varitiies, this year it’s Golden Zest and Ronald Reagan. This variety seems to have had some major success popularity in other parts of the world without making much of a dent in the US, despite having been bred by Keith Zary and raised in the US. It has Golden Celebration and Sunsprite in its lineage, but is reputed to last much longer than both. I bought Golden Zest from RU last year, unfortunately I placed it in a spot where the sprinklers didn’t hit properly. Ive since relocated him to one of the best spots in the garden. The OP with the magnificient pics was also based in Sacramento, so I’ve got really high hopes.

I have this one. It has been in the ground almost 1 full year (this is its second season) right now it has more that 30 buds on it and it should be blooming in a week or two. I absolutely lose this rose. Nice fragrance too. It does have week necks but it is a beautiful rounded bush. It is about 3 by 3 already this year. Definitely one of my favorites out of the 60 I have. I will post pics when it is in bloom in a few weeks.

Golden Zest and HOE are roses that have interested me from seeing them on this forum. Is GZ usually that dark of a gold?

Which rose of the above do you like best - they all appeal to me, but I don't grow them.

Good question. Golden Zest is NOT always this dark old gold color. In the heat it is just 'plain' yellow. Still very nice and fragrant.
From all the roses pictured above, I think I have a few of runners up: Heaven on Earth, Ambridge and Golden Wings.
Golden Wings is awesome - although it's a single, but the blooms are huge and when the bush is covered with flowers, it's a beauty to behold.

Great photos. My Golden Zest is almost always a darker gold than yours, it must be our sunlight is not as bright.
