Seed saving injury

I'm new - been lurking - and you guys are an inspiration - so far this year I've collected seeds from several ornamental trees and perrenials, both at home and at work

But, Arrrgh! Yesterday I noticed the fruits on a viburnum lantanoides were ripe and ready - and decided to collect some on my lunch hour. Well I got so excited that while I was rushing down the stairs I somehow caught my shoe and pulled something in my right calf and ankle. Now I'm hobbling around and I still haven't got my seeds. It's just too funny that the common name for v.l. is Hobblebush!!

Anyone else with a story to tell?

About three weeks ago I really strained every muscle in my body racing to finish digging my garden expansion before Hurricane Ike rains came in.

Of course, we didn't get a drop of rain after all of that. And on day two of aches I tripped off the edge of my porch and twisted my knee badly. It's just been a couple of days now that I've been able to walk without relying on a walking stick.

So this afternoon I was standing up digging through my big box full of envelopes of seeds I've harvested this year. Something moved fast a few feet away and I jumped. It was my walking stick falling over from where I had propped it. Wowie did I twist that knee again! Fortunately this was just painful and doesn't seem to be damage like the last time.

I guess Walkie the walking stick must have felt neglected today. He'll be joining me for my evening seed harvest. Hopefully we have no further misadventures.

The good thing is that whenever there's a gardening injury there's usually some other gardening that needs to be done that makes for really good physical therapy. :)

I'm always battling the latest case of poison ivy, so I tend to be itchy a lot! you can imagine the looks I get at work!

I'm also always walking around with bruises, cuts a scrapes. I guess I just get into a zone a don't pay much attention to it.

Then there's the slow movement way I have to get out of bed each and every day!!

No major injuries yet, but I guess all my little ones add up to one BIG ONE!

I hope you are both feeling better now!

Blaferby, I have seen improvement in yield, etc. when saving and using seed from my own garden. But I don't know how much of that is because of selection and how much is because I learn how to better grow the given variety. I've been seriously saving seeds since 1984. Here's what I would suggest. You can go ahead and use your extra seeds, for as long as you desire. But make a practice of producing some new seed every year that you can. Save each batch separately, and label it accurately. Eventually your original seed will give out. It's always possible that you might get an unintentional cross in a batch of seed. By saving several batches, you better ensure the survival of the original variety. If you really want to go the extra mile, save some of your seed in a sealed jar, in the freezer. This essentially halts the aging process of the seed. I once grew out a squash from seen which had been 25 years in a freezer. It germinated as if it were only a year old, and... I was amazed how my more recent seed stock had morphed over the years. I had essentially narrowed the gene pool, changing the mix of characteristics in the variety. George Tahlequah, OK

Hi again, Being I would have to see the flower, it is hard to say. But since they came out easy, maybe. It isn't that they are drying in the dead flower, they are ripening. When the flower is finished, the seeds are starting to develop. How long depends on the type of flower. For some it is very quick, 4 O'Clocks come to mind. Other seem to take forever to ripen. When flowers like marigolds are finished, the seeds as you know ripen in the base of where the flower was. You have to wait for the base to dry up before taking the seeds out to ensure they have properly ripened. So the whole process is sort of like a pregnancy. The flower blooming part is when the sex happens. Then the seed ripening time is like a baby developing. If you remove the seeds too soon, they haven't developed properly. It is like a premature birth. The drying once you remove the seeds, is because there is a residual amount of moisture in them. If you store them before it is gone, you risk the chance of moisture collecting and causing mold which kills the seed. Hope that makes sense, Remy

I prescrub the seeds in a sieve and add alot of water to the sieved gel juice. About half the time it takes 3 days at room temperature but sometimes up to 5. It is a lot less messy, time consuming and disgusting to do a little cleaning on the font end. No nasty sludge/floating mold to deal with. I use 16 oz deli containers with lids, but ziplock bags work just fine in an emergency. I've left seed in for a week many times with no sprouting, the ones that did sprout were sprouted on day 4. Sometimes seeds sprout inside the fruit, generally in store bought fruit possibly from long term storage, so I wouldn't rush to take half fermented seeds out just because you are afraid of sprouting, its going to happen, rarely, or not.

Jsvand5, I don't know of any commercial source for Goose Creek seeds, but two people listed Goose Creek in the 2008 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. If you aren't a member of SSE yet, this would be a very good time to join because the 2009 Yearbook is just now going to the printer and will be out in a month or two. The Yearbook is a very good place to look for varieties that you can't find anywhere else, as many members list those for which they have enough seeds to offer. Laurel, there was never any patent granted for Goose Creek, nor will there be. Jimmy Williams applied for a patent on November 11, 2004 but it was never granted. Goose Creek was not "invented" by Jimmy Williams, and as noted above, the stages of ripeness described for Goose Creek are not unique to Goose Creek. Jimmy Williams can apply for a patent if he wishes but he won't get one. The United States Patent and Trademark Office has a public web page at http://patft.uspto.gov/ where anyone can look up patent applications as well as the patents that have been granted, and you will see that there is an application but it has NOT been granted. I have escape the poison ivy. Last year I had to make two trips to the Dr. to get rid of it! I think the sore elbow was more old age and over use. Somewhere in my travels outside I became friends with a tick. It attached itself to my back. I remember scratching something and must of dislodged it. Before I knew it I had a spot 6"-8" really inflamed. Dr treated aggressivly but didn't think it was Lime's. She just said Oh! My! The meds made me sick and had to stay out of the sun so it really limited my outside time. Winter will soon be here and we can rest up and dream about planting the seeds we did manage to collect. save, or trade! Things we do for our relaxation. Hope everyone is on the mend.
