I bet you are right, Azura. I've grown various violas by planting in the Spring really early in open ground and, of course, they start growing & blooming in late Winter if they become established outdoors.

It has been decades since I've grown turnips (much prefer bok choy and such ;o) but they are super hardy. And, sweetpeas are one of those round-seeded peas that generally aren't inclined to rot even if it is too cold to germinate.

You'd need to wait until next season for these things to come up, however. The link below shows that turnips will not germinate if the soil is 41°F or below. I see that optimum germination temperature for pansies is 65, but that doesn't mean much. Probably, a much safer choice would be something more closely related to johnny jump-ups.

I almost always plant pansy plants in the fall and they do really really well. They look good until a really hard freeze and don't even die back completely all winter. Then they start going extremely early in the spring/late winter and keep going well until summer heat kills them off.

Mine have been reseeding well in recent years.

If I plant pansy seeds, it's usually in flats outdoors around March. They germinate well and don't get leggy if they're kept cool.
