A year ago I stumbled into caring for a community garden with some interesting peppers. That lead me to GW and all of you pepper fanatics. And then the madness began. This spring/summer I grew my own plants from seed for varieties I'd never heard of a year and a half ago. They have invaded my house this fall and I'm not planning to part with many (if any) of them. They did get recent "haircuts" followed by a shower to reduce their size and pest populations. That resulted in my first indoor harvest. Fun stuff! Still can't handle eating most of the hot ones, though!

I used the black plastic bins to "compost" for years, and then 3 years ago I built a big bin, followed by two more last year. My conclusions: the plastic bins aren't large enough for hot composting. For all intents and purposes, they are outdoor garbage cans for organic matter. But that said, worms, pill bugs, centipedes, millipedes etc. will move in and break down the OM you put in it, it just takes longer. I used to empty these things once a year (usually in the fall to make room for more yard waste). On the plus side, what came out looked very much (and was) compost. On the down side, I usually got a lot of volunteer tomato plants, pumpkins etc. wherever I spread the compost. I actually just gave the last of my plastic bins to a neighbor - he was admiring the steam coming off my new bins and thought that was kinda cool. I figured I'd start him small ;o) Cheers, Tim

I had to get my kids back to school, so I took a much needed leave from canning for September. This weekend I finally made the fig jam I was planning from some fresh gifted figs, and I picked a pile of herbs to hang and dry. Now I'm feeling like I'm back in business! I am jealous of all of you who are "sick" of tomatoes, since I lost almost all of mine to the late blight, sigh. Plans for fall-early winter: --bake/freeze some cheese pumpkin for holiday pies. --Apple picking next weekend followed by applesauce, prepping ready made pies, etc. --I have raspberries and blackberries in the freezer, portioned for jams, as well as two batches of tomatoes portioned for more salsa, which is being used up fast. No rush to work with this stuff until time allows. --I'll pick up some broccoli, cauliflower and squash at the farm stands to freeze and/or store over the next few weekends. --I'm going to try my hand at sauerkraut. --con a friend out of some of the many chestnuts that she's been harvesting from her trees, and some quinces that are just about ready. --And I'm dying to try curing some fresh green olives, which are available at our local produce market now. I will be really dangerous once I get a pressure canner. Haven't even tried soups/broth etc. yet. Even with winter included for canning, I'm not sure there are enough hours in each day, ha.

hello fellow newbie i am also new here i just discovered this forum through shear dumb luck i have never been too much of an internet person really but have been eating super spicy foods since i was a kid and am addicted to chile peppers this is my first year growing chile peppers and i have some in the ground and some in pots, most i bought as seedlings from nurseries mostly boring stuff, jalapeno anaheim cayenne banana pimento, but i also have started habaneros tobascos thai fresno a bhut jolokia and a medusa from seeds i started this year w/ 18 and now im up to 67 a little ambitious for my first year probably, but as most of u here know chiles are an obsession. to all out there that post thanks for all the tips and advice i have enjoyed reading ur posts

Steve, at this point, at least around here, the trout fisheries is under such enormous environmental stress that if I catch something, I just put them back - exception would be hatchery rainbows. I might grab a bucket of salmon from the Fish and Game guys this fall when they catch them to strip the eggs as they come up from McPhee Dam to smoke - that can be pretty good. I'm conflicted on the potassium nitrate to keep the meat red - on the one hand, deliberately adding the stuff seems odd, but then so does grey meat. I grabbed a couple of those bagged pork loins when they were on sale and froze them, and at some point when it gets cold enough, I'll brine, smoke, and slow roast them and hopefully come up with something I can use for sandwiches. Grey ones. But, if you slather enough mustard on, and add some green pickles ...... I'm now working on cleaning up the veggie garden after the hard freeze. This is the one garden chore I really don't like. Cart loads of whiffy, rotting vegetation. Bushels of fermenting tomatoes. When I ask my kids to help, this being part of the farmers market toil, they very suddenly have really, really hard home work they just gotta do. I was surprised to find out that my green peppers, picked 10 days ago and refrigerated in plastic bags, are still just wonderful.

1st step is to save seeds.

next step is to make a simple hot sauce to preserve the harvest.

Dangould, I saved seeds last year and grew fine plants with them this year. I have seeds from most of this year's varieties, too. Just waiting on a few more batches to dry and a few plants to complete ripening. The house has some interesting "decorations" these days. DH wondered why we were running out of plates and bowls. LOL They are all scattered around on the tops of cabinets with pepper and tomato seeds drying on them. Last year I did a simple "blend up some hot peppers with vinegar" sauce (more like juice) and have been adding it to various things throughout the year. I plan to make some more and maybe try some dried mixes, too. I still can't handle very much of the heat. My DH watches and laughs every time I sample a new pepper variety and find out it is hotter than I expected. Fun stuff. Haven't tried the Bhut Jolokias yet....not sure if I will without first diluting it down with some other food.

trfanatic: I think I'm grounded back in 2008 now. Think maybe the hot stuff got to me before :)

pbishop: I grew 1 plant from one seed. (had great germination of all seeds I received from John) I transplanted PI 238051 into a 12 inch diameter, 10 inch tall pot on my south facing patio using Promix potting mix. I fertilized a few times throughout the season with a generic Miracle Grow-like liquid when the leaves looked a bit yellowish. The PI 238051 grew well, as did all my other peppers. My season wasn't long enough for much to ripen so I took the pots inside and have them by a south facing double patio door. I think only a handful of the PI 238051s ripened before coming inside. The plant now has over 25 ripe, bright red pods, and the leaves are still dark green. Looks like I should use it instead of buying Christmas plants! The plant is compact and bushy, about 15 inches tall. It looks like a suitable houseplant to me :) Some of the other pepper plants have had aphids that I sprayed off but so far the PI looks fine.

I'm not a good person to ask about taste since anything with much heat overwhelms me and I don't notice much else. I did just taste one of these before replying, though. The bottom end was mild, and sweet with maybe a fruity taste hidden in there. The third nibble up was hot, but not "oh, no, I can't stand it" hot. And the burn went away after only a few minutes. So I'd guess most of you would consider it only slightly hot :)

Hope yours grows well for you next season.
